I really think Andrew’s position on GDP is every bit as important as his position in favor of UBI. The economy operates in terms of what you measure, and the United States for decades has used Gross Domestic Product as our common understanding of how good the economy is doing. Some of you might even hear about “Economic models” that predict a Trump win in 2020 because apparently someone thinks things are on the rise? But something Andrew could do on day one as president with no approval necessary is establish the national GDW standard, creating a meaningful metric based on everything you see on the right of this image, and using it as a measuring stick for all government agencies as to our goals for the health of society. You can’t really be successful until you know how to measure success and GDP will not get us there.
We invented GDP almost 100 years ago during the Great Depression. Its creator Simon Kuznets said 3 things: 1. we should not include military spending 2. the work of parents should be included 3. it is not a good measure for national well-being and we should not use it as such.
