Yuzuru Hanyu wearing a beautiful costume on his FP: Origin. I have to admit that the first time I saw Hanyu’s costume I was not impressed, in my opinion it resembled Shoma Uno’s winter costumes (1/2) from last season quite a bit. However, after looking at it closely, one can see that the details are very different. Designed by Satomi Ito, Hanyu’s outfit is set over black lace and has beautiful black and white feather details that give the costume an ethereal feel when he glides through the ice. I love the gold beading which enhances Yuzuru’s silhouette and give the outfit movement by itself. Also, my favorite part of this outfit, aside form the white feathers, are the colored beads. This beads are very subtle (sort of purple-ish), and are easier to see up close or with a particular type of lighting; however from afar they definitely complete this costume giving it more brightness and enhancing the other details. Overall, I find this costume magnificent. Probably, the similarity between Uno’s and Hanyu’s costume is more likely related to the fact that Satomi Ito designed the three costumes, but still when looking at them closely the details are nothing alike. Hopefully, we will be delighted one more time by Hanyu’s costume and performance during the World Championships in a couple of days.

Shoma Uno taught us a lesson on elegance with his costume for his free program: Moonlight Sonata. Designed by Mathieu Caron, Uno’s outfit is beautifully tailored to fit his free skate perfectly. I love how the designer played with the different shades of blue, specially with the ombre effects on the top. The blue and gold rhinestone details also add that ‘starry night’ effect, which matches flawlessly with the theme of the program. Also, I find that the draping in Shoma’s shirt, similar to Guillaume Cizeron’s costume from last season which you can see here, adds a touch of elegance and enhances Uno’s silhouette magnificently. This is another perfect example on how to match a costume to a program to add that aesthetic plus to the performance. Shoma Uno’s FS costume is definitely one of my favorites from this season and I’m definitely exited to see what costumes he will be choosing next.

Eun-Soo Lim wearing a beautiful costume for her free skate: Chicago. Designed by Lisa McKinnon, Eun-Soo’s dress has beautiful details that make this outfit stand out on the ice. The turtle neck halter top was embellished with black and silver rhinestones creating different patterns that look elegant and help the outfit achieve that classical ‘Chicago’ look. The fringe skirt has really thin strings that give it a delicate touch and a fun movement while Eun-Soo glides through the ice. I also loved the open back, I think it suited and flattered Eun-Soo Lim’s silhouette, and it gave the outfit a bold touch. Altogether, I think this outfit is a great example of how to connect costumes with the program’s music. If you’ve ever seen the Chicago musical or the movie it will be pretty obvious that Eun-Soo was going for a theme here and she definitely hit the target. Hopefully we will be seeing more beautiful costume choices from Eun-Soo next season. Which costume would you like to see reviewed next on the blog? I would love to hear your opinion, guys. Let me know.

Mikhail Kolyada from Russia showed us a simple costume for his SP: I Belong to You. Kolyada’s outfit definitely gave me a black and white Mondrian vibe. I love how the color-block costume played with textures. In this outfit Kolyada plays with fabrics. On his right side, he mixes a black leatherish fabric with a metallic honeycomb pattern fabric, and on his left side a black and a white matte fabric. In my opinion, Mikhail Kolyada showed us that a black and white male costume doesn’t have to be necessarily boring (Nathan Chen take some notes). Another detail I liked was the metallic silver belt, I felt that it gave the outfit a bold touch. Overall, Mikhail Kolyadas SP costume is simple but not dull, and it adds an interesting touch to his program.

Rika Kihira’s senior debut has been wonderful. During her free program, A Beautiful Storm, Rika showed us a gorgeous dark blue ombre dress. I loved the details in this costume, starting by the rhinestones that go around the front and the back, and even the sleeves. Its design reminds me of a lighting strike, which goes perfectly with the theme of the program.  I specially love the ombre effect that goes from a dark blue to a gray to a baby blue, which in my opinion matches perfectly with the program’s song and also with how a storm develops from start to finish. The open back adds a feminine touch, while the cuts on the skirt give it a delightful movement while she glides through the ice. The mesh on the neckline and sleeves give the outfit a delicate detail. Finally, the gloves fit perfectly with the outfit, adding to the ombre effect of the costume, they seamlessly blend in and add to Rika’s movement on the ice by enhancing it and making her look ethereal. Rika Kihira is definitely someone to keep our eyes on during the rest of the season since she has provided wonderful performances so far.

Jun Hwan Cha, from South Korea, showed us a simple costume this season for his FS: Romeo and Juliet. A deep purple shirt with few rhinestones and lacey details. Although this is not one of my favorite costumes from the male category this season, I appreciate the touch of lace that was added to the shirt, since it’s something we don’t usually see in male costumes. The lace line details in the back are more transparent than the front, which added a fun touch to the outfit. I also liked how the deep purple tone suited Jun Hwan Cha making him look elegant. However, I have to say there’s one aspect that disturbs the costume, which are the gloves. They do not fit Jun Hwan Cha’s skin color at all, a black pair would’ve looked better. Over all, Jun Hwan Cha’s performance was quite entertaining,  however I don’t think the outfit added anything to the program. Hopefully next season we will see a bolder outfit from Jun.

This season, Wakaba Higuchi’s short program dress has been one of my favorite costumes. Designed by Satomi Ito, Wakaba’s bold dress has a perfect color combination. This ombre dress has some touches of orange, pink, purple, white, blue, and black, yet the combination is impeccably balanced. The mesh in the neck line matches Wakaba’s skin color perfectly, which is a subtle detail that can make or break a figure skater’s whole outfit. The black and white beaded lines, along with the blue, pink, and purple rhinestones give a touch of brightness to the dress complementing the costume. The skirt has a beautiful movement while Higuchi glides through the ice. Overall, the outfit is fun without losing elegance, and it fits the program’s upbeat tempo wonderfully.

During the first half of this season, in her 2018 Skate Canada Autumn Classic short program, Evgenia Medvedeva showed us a costume so different from what we are used to from her. A black top with a lightly ombre navy blue dress, and rhinestone details in pink, silver, and blue flattered Medvedeva and her program. Definitely inspired in the flapper dresses form the 1920′s, Evgenia’s dress suited her music perfectly. I specially loved the fringed skirt, which added to the fun element of the program’s music and her personalized rose-gold blades, which is a detail that I enjoy skaters to change.  Sadly, Evgenia changed both her short and free programs along with its dresses, so we probably won’t be seeing this costume during the rest of the 2018-19 season.

Yuzuru Hanyu, gold medalist at the Pyeongchang Olympics wearing a costume designed by Satomi Ito. Based on his 2015 costume, Hanyu’s attire suffered a variety of changes during the 2017-18 season which resulted in the final version we saw at the winter olympics. The costume imitates a kariginu worn by Japanese officials during the Heian period, it looked classic with a modern touch. The white embroidery, along with the subtle crystal beading gave this costume a more subdued look in comparison with earlier versions. The purple and turquoise details added a pop of color that complemented the whole outfit wonderfully. Finally, the gold and black beading on the front, back and sleeves, completed the outfit. Satomi Ito has stated that over 3000 rhinestones were used on the whole costume. This costume undoubtedly complemented Hanyu’s free program magnificently.

Olympic silver medalists Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron showed us that you don’t need a ton of crystal and bling to have beautiful costumes. Designed by Sophia Thomas, Papadakis-Cizeron costumes were elegant, simple, and will definitely become timeless. Papadakis’ dress neckline and open back were tasteful, alongside with Cizeron’s shirt draping. Him wearing navy blue pants fitted perfectly with the color of her dress, and the sheer flowy mesh gave it a beautiful effect while gliding through the ice. These beautiful costumes matched perfectly with the program and added to its artistry.

Continuing with the regal theme, we had Alina Zagitova’s costume for her free skate Don Quixote. Designed by Olga Ryabenko, the vibrant red in the tutu-qua-dress and long gloves Zagitova wore grabbed the eye, definitely resembling a ballerina, and the gold threading details reminded me of the baroque period. A stunning dress without a doubt.

In commemoration of the one year anniversary of the 2018 Pyeonchang Olympics, let our first post be of Shoma Uno’s Turandot 2.0 costume. Designed by Satomi Ito, Uno’s costume is one of the most memorable costumes of the 2017-18 season. The gold threading and beading along with the ruby red details over the sapphire blue velvet fabric definitely evoked a royal vibe. The v-neckline and the colors suited Uno perfectly. Details on this costume, such as the iridescent blue mesh sleeves and the subtle beading both on the sleeves and on the lower part of the top, were magnificent. Definitely one of my favorite costumes from last season.
