you can’t help but wonder sometimes of your boyfriend’s past lovers. you’re not his first partner, yet he’s your first boyfriend. your mind can’t help but speculate about how he treated those before you, did he treat them the way he treats you now?

did he call them the same cute nicknames he calls you, cook their favourite foods when they’re hungry at 2:37 AM, cuddle them on the couch during a cold winter’s night?

he doesn’t mind telling you about his exes if you ask, though he prefers to keep discussions to a minimum since he feels it’s disrespectful to gush about a past lover to his current. he doesn’t keep past mementos of them, nor recall memories with them unless you inquire first.

people expect you to be jealous when they find out about his many previous partners. “their boyfriend knows how to treat a girl right because of all his past lovers” they’d gossip right infront of you, “he’s a womanizer for sure.”

they try to rile you up, create a rift between the two of you so they can have him for himself. as much as you can’t help but wonder about how he treated his past girlfriends, what about other women in his life?

his mother who raised him with good morals, manners and a kind heart, teaching him how to treat a woman right. his aunts who he would run to for advice on what gifts to give on a date, ensuring he always had enough money to pay the bill afterwards. his favourite older cousins he ranted to about how much he loved his girlfriend, who would yell at him whenever he screwed up big time.

maybe things would’ve been different for the two of you if you had met him earlier, had been his first. but you fell for the man you met when you did, and you’re happy about it.

you look down at your sleeping boyfriend in your lap, the both of you tucked under a thick blanket as he peacefully sleeps, face relaxed and a comforting smile.

any hint of jealously or uneasiness in the stability of your relationship fizzles out as soon as you gaze at his sleeping figure and think about how the women in his life have shaped him for the better, whether romantic or not. he’s become the man you met and fell in love with because of them. and for that you are grateful, because your boyfriend is the most wonderful man you could’ve imagined being with. someone who knows how to treat you right because of his past experience with other women.

every women he’s met has led him to you, and you’re happy you get to call him your first, even if you’re not his.

your hand instinctively reaches for his hair, running through it gently before caressing his face delicately, analyzing his beautiful features.

your boyfriend stirs awake as you pull your hand away, startled you had woken him up. “i’m sorry,” you apologize quietly, “go back to sleep.”

“no, ‘s okay,” he mumbles sleepily, blinking the tiredness out of his eyes and lifting his head to meet your eyes. you blink at him in confusion for a moment before he pulls your face in slowly for a lazy, sleep fueled kiss.

it’s surprising at first but sweet and romantic. a hand on your cheek, he turns his head to deepen it further as you both melt into the kiss, his other hand on your waist and yours clutching his sweater.

his attention never strays while kissing you, tuning out everything else as a potential distraction from you. he makes you feel like the only person in the world, the most precious time to him is time spent with you.

your cheeks are warm when you both pull away for air afterwards, “what was that for?” you ask him, flustured at the sudden and unexpected kiss. your heart flutters just as it did when you first started dating him, he lays his head on your chest and laughs at your reaction when you tense up but hug his head close to your heart.

“because i love you.”

he enjoys the way you stutter while trying to come up with a response, before giving in and resting your head atop his, whispering softly for only him to hear.

“but i love you more.”

people say you never forget your first love. that everyone after them will never compare.

but to him, it doesn’t matter that you’re not his first because you are his last. he’s found the one for him, always and forever.
