I just learned that Balin apparently met Frodo on one of his visits to Bilbo and would tell him about his travels I'm going to cry

Bilbo adopted Frodo the same year Balin left for Moria! Frodo was 21 at the time, basically a 10 year old. I have no doubts Balin, Ori and Oin visited them before their expedition

Because I enjoy pain, I now headcanon that they wanted Bilbo to join their quest, but couldn't because of Frodo being there... fate and shit

Can you imagine the thoughts running through Balin's head as he saw this black haired, blue eyed boy?

I like to imagine that he was struck for a moment trying to fit pieces of a puzzle together that didn't make sense until he hears Frodo call Bilbo Uncle. Just for a second before he is invited in Bilbo and Balin lock eyes, and without a single word needing to be said Balin understands why Bilbo, who was already at the age of 99, took this lad in. How could he not when it was clear who the boy so closely resembled.

I think Balin was happy that Bilbo found something, or rather someone, to help stem the tide of tragic loss.

I can also defintely see Bilbo telling him not to go on his expedition to Moria out of fear and concern, because he had heard the stories about the battle of Azanulbizar.

And then Balin knowing it's probably the last time he'll see Bilbo and Frodo (who he just met)

well you know what happened in our elvish class? our teacher took us to the harbor to look for some fucking crystals for hours and then he fought a swan and set a bunch of ships on fire all while shouting gibberish in quinoa or whatever. never taking elvish again smh
