II The Pharaoh's Curse

“A’right,” breathed Richard as he felt the woman’s hand untangle from his. His fingers clasped tightly round the stem of the pistol. Taking a deep breath, Richard stood up straight and as he exhaled felt his shoulder’s relax. Extending his arms, he kept both eyes open and did his level best to steady the slight movement on his arms. Another deep breath. Richard felt his chest puff out. It was as if the blunt cold of the sea-air disappeared. The whole world crumbled minus for him, the gun, and his targets.

His finger curled round the trigger and pressed down. The first bullet went flying by the first metal can. “Damn,” hissed Richard. However, the second bullet managed to kick the can right off the boat’s edge. A victorious smile grew on the Scotsman’s face as he shot two more bullets, knocking his targets clean off.
“Holy shite! Did you see that!? I bloody did it!” he cheered as he placed the gun down and mindlessly scooped up Wanda, pulling her into a triumphant embrace. It was then that Richard was dropped back into reality. The tips of his and Wanda’s nose were no less than a centimeter away. His beaming smile began to gradually fade as his lips parted. Richard could feel his hands pushing the small of her back closer and closer.

Wanda was glad that her lesson was paying off. He was keeping his head straight which was the most important thing to do while holding a gun--and he actually hit the second can and was all smiles and then he was picking her up in an embrace and her smile started to drop because he was close--close enough to cause trouble and get under her skin and she already owed him her life and that feeling was confused in and on itself. He was so full of light and happiness and lightness and she was--she had darkness inside her and people around her kept dying.

But his arms were around her and hers were around his neck and he was pulling her closer and she was going to kiss him because how could she not kiss him?

“You don’t waste any time do you, little one?” a voice came from behind Richard--a voice that caused a cold shiver ran over her spine and tense. Quickly she pulled away from Richard and grabbed the gun he had left at the table, shielding him from her and pointing it straight at Natasha. Natasha Romanova was still alive?

“Get lost or get shot,” Wanda warned her getting a roll-eye in return. “And you’re her bookworm right? Natasha Romanova, I’m with the americans,” she said introducing herself to Richard.

“you know you can stay for as long as you need and want to, sweetheart.” ethan said before kissing the top of her head. he was so happy his daughter was back, even if it was for a small amount of time. he remembered when she had first showed up to his doorstep, that had happened a few years ago. now, she had gone on to study to get her degree and he couldn’t be prouder.
“well, you bet they missed ye, too.” he commented looking at how both dogs wagged their tails in excitement, even when they were older now, both of their heads had a bit more white fur than before. “how was school?” ethan asked as he moved around the kitchen, trying to see if he had the ingredients to prepare something but actually missing a few, “would you like to go eat to some restaurant?” he suggested. “your pick,” he smiled.

“if i take you up on that you’ll have to put up with me until your 70s old man,” wanda teased him hugging him and staying by his side with her arms around his torso. she had been here not that long ago but now she was actually moving back in from college and she was pretty excited about it--other people would call her lame but she didn’t care. family was very important to her and ethan and the furry boys were all she had--they had each other.

“oh fine, school’s fine,” she said with a small smile even though not everything was  great there. she had called things off with the guy she’d been seeing--the older guy who happened to teach at her school and ethan knew nothing about and never will--and it was getting to her a bit. “i can’t believe i’m almost over. i’ve started applying to some jobs, like actual research jobs. hopefully one will bite,” she added showing her fingers crossed.

“how have you been? how’s work and stuff?”

being alone in the streets hadn’t been easy but wanda had managed, she always did. as she grew older she had to make compromises, specially after losing pietro but she never thought she’d end up like this--bruised and in fear for her life. she had a very small window of opportunity to escape, to get as far away from this man as possible and she was going to take it or die trying.

it hadn’t been easy but she had managed to get some money and her good old rattled backpack and snuck out, past his claws and his boys’ claws. she managed to get as far as the car shop that sold half broken cars and she got the cheapest one--with a considerable discount when the woman selling it noticed her bruises.

as she drove away and into the highway towards nowehere in particular the anxiety and paranoia slowly started wearing off. she had put 300 miles in between her past and her uncertain future when it started to get dark and the rain hit and soon enough her car started doing something-something she didn’t understand but was definitely not good. she was stranded and alone in the middle of nowhere but at least she had her freedom.

noticing lights from a house in the distance, she picked her backpack and locked the car, making her way towards the house, hoping they wouldn’t send her away. “Hello? Is there anyone home? My car broke down and I--I need help.”

Wanda did have a point. Now that Richard thought about it, could he really imagine Jessica Bartram coming home from work and actually taking the time of day to change some kid’s nappies? Not only that, but Richard really couldn’t imagine the woman cradling a newborn baby in her arms without pondering about work deadlines and who the new caterer for some gaudy event will be. “Aye, I suppose yer’ right. Let’s hope I remain smart the next time I start datin’, eh?”

After giving his order to the waiter, Richard rested his elbow upon the table and leaned his cheek upon his upturned hand. A calmed smile drew itself upon Richard’s face all the while he listened to the brunette. Ah, nothing has changed. Wanda was still the famous rambler than she was in the past. Sure, to most she would rub them as the quiet and perhaps even shy type, but not with Richard, or at least he didn’t see her that way. Richard always knew Wanda as the type of woman with a story to say. Usually, everything that brushed past her lips never seized to entertain him.
“Well, haven’t you been a wee busy bee,” chuckled the Scotsman. “I’m happy for ya’, Wanda. I mean, just look at how far you’ve gone. I know you say you have to start somewhere when it comes to bein’ a researcher, but in my book you’ve already made it pretty far.” Just then the waiter came in and laid there drinks in front of them. Perfect timing.
“To more adventures, eh?” hummed Richard as he gingerly tilted the brim of his cup against her glass.

“So you hadn’t dated anyone since your ex? I can’t believe that,” Wanda quipped not believing a word out of his mouth. He was the cutest man she’d ever met--okay, well, he was in the top 3 definitely and he was one hell of a catch with baby blue eyes. It was impossible for him not to have dated since that bridezilla person.

Again, it was probably not her place to ask. This was a friend of her father’s who was considerably older than her (as if that had ever stopped her) but hey, Ethan’s friend. Right. Nothing remotely similar to flirting should come out of her lips because this guy had helped her with her economics homework, he’d never see her as anything but Ethan’s overgrown kid.

“I had to make up for all the time I lost,” Wanda explained nibbling at her inner cheek. “But yeah, I’ve kept myself busy. I just wanted to do something you know? Prove to dad that his investment in my education wasn’t for nothing,” she shrugged feeling small again, a feeling she did not like one bit.

“Well thank you, I’m really not good with compliments,” she admitted looking down and then up again when the waiter brought their drink. Lifting her glass, she toasted along with him, meeting his eyes, “to more adventures.”

“it’s not really a lot about coordination, it’s just a trick. i’ve seen it on the internet,” it was true. he had found countless tutorials on how to beat the claw machine. there was still a sweet smile on his face; seeing how she held the bear close. “you’re welcome,” he said fumbling with what he could find on his pockets, which actually, wasn’t much. “ya sure? i could try—” and then he felt his cheeks burning just after she had pressed a kiss to his cheek. “i’m really not the best, wanda.” he commented. “where would you like to go now?”
Image

“well i still think it’s awesome and if you don’t have coordination you can’t pull the trick off,” whatever that trick was, wanda had no idea but she was still impressed and happy with her teddy bear. it was a really sweet thing for him to do and it gave her stupid hope about peter maybe feeling something else for her other than friendship but, at the same time, friends did nice things for their friends and that included teddy bears. “nah, it’s fine. and you ARE the best. period,” she stressed without dropping the smile. “uhm, the ferris wheel maybe”

this wasn’t bucky’s first time flying, in fact he’s lost count on how many times he’s been on a plane. he grew up in a wealthy family, flew to almost every country every year for christmas, so he was pretty calm but the man beside him was not. bucky could tell the other was panicking but he didn’t have a clue what to do. how do you calm someone down? he’s never witnessed something like this before. “hey, man. you ok?” of course, he isn’t, buck. have you seen him?

steve did not want to be the person that got kicked out of the plane for making a scene. he did not want to be the person the people around him had stories about after they got off the plane. he didn’t want to be the freakish adult that couldn’t handle a 5 hour flight, he really didn’t but oh he definitely was that person.

only hearing the guy next to him got him out of the increasing spiraling out of control thoughts regarding all the ways the plane could malfunction and they could all die.

“what? he asked noticing his breathing was raggedy. “no, im most definitely not okay.”

flying was for dinosaurs and birds, not for humans, specially not on a flying tin can with this level of pressure. it wasn’t natural or healthy or anything other than a danger. granted, it was fast and she’d get to see his sister in 6 hours but--but at what cost!?

Image

he was a nervous mess and both of his legs were wagging nervously as well as his fingers drumming incessantly against his thighs. he was trying to focus on his breathing, on the potential movies he could watch, on the complimentary booze he could get but nothing was calming him down.

OKAY can someone please give me an age gap plot where muse a is about eighteen or nineteen and has run away from a toxic environment (family or relationship, doesn’t matter), and maybe just got into their car and started driving, but they ran out of gas and find themselves stranded in the middle of the countryside. Enter muse b, about twenty five or older, and the only person within ten miles whose parents have now both passed away so they inherited the family farm and don’t really want to leave but they’re getting lonely. In the middle of a thunderstorm a drenched muse a shows up, so muse b ushers them in and asks how they got out here and what happened to them etc, and muse b has to explain that their next fuel delivery isn’t for a couple of weeks. So they give muse a a bed to stay in and jobs to do to ‘earn their keep’ but honestly muse b just likes having someone else around, and the two get on really well and muse a is just so glad to feel safe again. But of course, feelings get involved and as the lines blur, things get confusing because muse b is tempted to offer muse a a job on the farm but muse a feels like a bother and doesn’t want to trouble muse b anymore but at the same time doesn’t want to go just yet. Add in the age difference, and you have a wonderful mess of angst and fluff.

ethan chuckled, “of course he’s a great dog. emily picked him and i trained him. besides… he’s a labrador, being a great dog is in their genes.” the loss of his first dog, scooby, hit him hard and his sister knew that — and then he lost emily but that was a thought and talk for another day. he was really amused by what wanda was saying, “a list would be great, include your allergies and whatnot. it would be extremely helpful.” his eyebrows raised as he continued to listen. “how come you hate doughnuts?” this was the first time he had ever heard such a phrase.
“oh— you meant like… a hook up sort of thing?” well now that was an odd thing to talk about with your daughter, “—i don’t do that.” yes he did but he wasn’t going to get into that. a smile took over his features when he heard, he even tried to hide how excited the idea made him, he was also scared — how was he going to tell her that he was a spy? “the room is yours if you want it.” he mentioned referring to the one she had been sleeping in.

“emily is your sister right? the little one on the pictures?” wanda asked feeling there was more to that because, she figured, if there was an aunt in her future she would’ve heard of her by now so maybe she had passed and ethan kind of said as much not that long ago. “i don’t think i have allergies. i hadn’t really tried sea food but i’m not really much into fish so,” she shrugged trying to keep the topics light, feeling the tears dangerously close from making a mess of her face, again.

“the y has this open breakfast for when you pay the monthly thing to shower. i mean, it’s not bad, it’s food but the doughnuts there tasted like cardboard. pietro loved them though. pietro would eat anything to be honest. i mean i ate them too but i really didn’t like them. and he’d get me an eclair for my birthday, it’s a tradition kinduf.”

she went back to looking at her hands, thinking that all of her memories had her brother in one way or another but now that was done and it wouldn’t happen anymore and she really wished they would’ve looked for him before. they could have a home and a dad and eclairs not just for birthdays. “are you sure? i mean--you have your life and i’m not a baby and...” she sighed. “i’d really like to stay and i’ll try not to be a nuisance.”
