Some thoughts on Cosette's fashion! I think it's really interesting that Cosette is meant to a bright joyful dawn-like character but she always dresses in black. The first dress she receives when she leaves the Thenardiers is a small black mourning gown, and I wonder if that has something to do with it. Anyway...Goth Cosette?
I just really love Éponine and I want to give her a hug and warm food. Like some soup. Some eggs, so that she can have good nutrients and fat and calories and also some good fiber to accompany the eggs maybe. And give her a nice warm coat and a blanket and my shoes I'm sure would fit her I just want her to have sturdy warm shoes and a skirt that isn't full of holes. And like, a petticoat? Over that underwear?

I just want her to be comfortable.

Happy Earth Day: celebrate by getting clean water in to Gaza!
(via unrwa): “Gaza: access to water is extremely limited and sanitary structures are insufficient to meet people's needs. Gaza's water supply remains at only 7 per cent of its pre-October 2023 levels.”
Gaza has been in a water crisis for months now, there is virtually no clean/drinkable/accessible water due to Israel’s occupation and siege.
With the summer months approaching, the temperatures in Gaza are rising (it will be nearly 40 celsius there this week) and the lack of viable water is going to continue to cause extreme destruction.

Yes!! What are the other character’s genres, is the question….Jean Valjean’s side of the story often has a sort of mythical or biblical feeling, especially with the comparisons to Prometheus, Sisyphus, and Jesus Christ. Eponine is living in some doomed romantic tragedy. Javert thinks he’s living in a Heroic Cop Detective story but actually he’s living in a satire of the police…..
The Amis are living in a heroic Epic. The narrative is VERY clear on this. The rest of this is just kickin' around Thoughts :
Valjean...yeah. He could be living out one of those histories of martyrs, couldn't he? Though I think Hugo would just say he's in a Drama, probably
Marius is definitely trying SO HARD to live a Romantic Tragedy-- the Honor issues, the vast symbolism he's attaching to everything ,m the overwhelming importance of Napoleon's career , it's all there . He is actually in a Gautieresque self-parodying Young Romantics stories , but he's trying so hard to make it a tragedy. Cosette is overwriting it though!! Eponine: The Grand Tragedy that Marius only thinks he has (or wants).
The Thenardiers: ALSO a fairy tale. They're the evil trolls/fairies/ogres. They sync perfectly with Cosette's story, which is why they're so powerful there, and kind of useless against any other genre (they are NOT taking their act to people like the Amis, or Gillenormand, or Myriel, or even Mabeuf. They KNOW people who have their feet in another genre are just gonna laugh at the gingerbread cottage and the cookpot. )
Gillenormand: a Moliere-esque old comedy , where the tyrannical old guardian winds up being just a big softie really and SURE the young lovers win , but also the old guardian's punishment is just to not be the head of household anymore. REGRETTABLY compatible with Cosette's HEA fairy tale.
Myriel is a folklore Trickster. So is Gavroche.
Sister Simplice deserves more love
There’s a fandom joke about the Waterloo digression not mattering to Les Mis, but I really love how all of Volume 2 takes place in its shadow. It’s strongly emphasized how everything is happening in the wake of these massive conflicts and wars.
The Ship Orion, where Jean Valjean is working as a convict, is a warship being used in the Spanish invasion. Now that Napoleon has been defeated, the French monarchy is sending their army to Spain to help violently assert the divine rights of the Spanish kings. The republic is dead, the empire is dead, and now it seems that monarchy will control France (and Europe) for a very long time.
The way that Madeleine “falls” and his town collapses without him feels like an echo of the fall of Napoleon.
Then, we reach “The Seargant of Waterloo” inn— where Thenardier has built his entire life on leeching off the legacy of Waterloo.
He made his initial fortune robbing the corpses at the battlefield, and now boasts/lies about having been a brave sergeant of Napoleon who rescued a general. He seems to worship violence and is desperate to enrich himself by exploiting anyone he can; he has all of Napoleon’s negative qualities, without any of his positive ones. Victor Hugo once insulted Napoleon III (the guy who exiled him) by calling him “Napoleon the Small”— and Thenardier feels like he could be a reference to that.
Outside of Thenardier we see other patrons of the inn talking about the Spanish wars, Napoleonic soldiers going to a fair to see a bird with coloration that reminds them of the tricolor flag, etc etc etc.
There’s this constant feeling of ordinary people existing under the shadows of this massive war, and its really fascinating to read!

Les Misérables (2012)
One thing I love about the Valjean-Cosette-first -meeting chapters is how both of them are obviously Poorly Socialized, and not really sure how to talk to people normally. They’re both such strange little creatures
