            it had been a long time since he had strolled these halls. in fact, he had only done his residency here for a few months before he went back to columbia. when he had been asked to assist on a particularly difficult surgery, however, he had gladly accepted. it was a breath of fresh air to work in a regular hospital again, with no inhumans and no agents and avengers. after the 6-hour long operation, he changed out of his shrubs and headed to the break room for a well-deserved cup of coffee. “hi,” he greeted the only other person there. “i’m making a cup of coffee. you want one?”

       “excuse me. excuse me! ma’am?” thomas didn’t see a badge, nor did he recognise her. although it wasn’t in his job description, he picked up his pace to stop her in her tracks. “can you show me some ID?” any guests to SHIELD’s headquarters had to be authorised and be given a lanyard, but she didn’t have one. 

“i can’t do this... i’m not the guy they’re looking for. god––” he was the man who had been operating on an agent when ten out of twelve people in the room went up in dust. he had collapsed into one of the worst panic attacks of his life. the man who had been working for shield for a year and a half and who had sat in a room with director fury twice in that time, and he had only spoken to him once. he was one expected to become head of shield’s medical team? he needed a therapy dog with him or at least near him at all times, and he was the man they chose to lead all of shield’s medical staff? or at least... those left?

“how can they think that i’m the right guy for this? how? there has got to be someone else, right?”

Thomas nodded. He could see the curiosity shine through Tony’s eyes, despite the fact that he was obviously trying to hide it. After all the stories he’d heard about him, it surprised him that he didn’t just bluntly asked. A nervous chuckle left his lips before he shook his head. “She helps me when I’m anxious,” he explained, pulling off his gloves and petting her for a second. “I..” Perhaps opening up a little would help them become more comfortable. “I was in the army and.. I have PTS. She offers emotional support. I’m not blind, that would make for a very troublesome surgeon,” he joked, though the laughter that came from his lips was a bit tense, hoping he hadn’t just ruined his chance of working with him.

Do had noticed her before Thomas did. She had tugged on her leash and although he was relatively sure that she had been trying to shield him or at least distract him from the alien, it only drew his attention towards her. His first instinct was to flee, as it would be for any sane human being. The overwhelming sense of intimidation faded as he observed her for just a little longer. She looked a bit... lost, and that was a feeling he knew all too well. 

Once he had actually approached and spoken to her, though, he began to think that running would have been the better option. Shivers of anxiety coursed through his veins and Do kept close to him, nudging her nose against the inside of his calf to keep him calm. “I am not.. at ease, but I work with S.H.I.E.L.D.––” he waited to see if she recognised the name, “–– the Avengers, essentially. What do you need them for and... who are you? You must understand that I can’t just send you to them without knowing that.” In fact, he didn’t think he was allowed to let her get near the facility at all. He needed to contact headquarters somehow, but this didn’t seem like the best moment to pull out his phone.
