Physics majors throw a lot of shade considering they’re still not sure where 95% of the universe is hidden.

My brother’s (a graduated theoretical physicist) only response to this was “WELL NEITHER DOES ANYONE ELSE!”

Hey, I would like some help, if your not too busy. I would like to make my own language with Lojban as a base. How would you advise making a language from an existing one? Also, do you know of a complete Lojabn vocabulary for free online?

Avatar

Hmm. Developing a language from the base of another is a good shortcut, especially if you aren’t very experienced / your language won’t be used much in whatever content you’re making anyway. With lojban, however, things are a little different. For those who don’t know, lojban is an experimental language based on formal logic. Here is a good resource (which also contains links to multiple dictionaries of different formats): (https://mw.lojban.org/papri/Lojban).

You need to take into consideration why this formal language is being used. By definition, it wouldn’t come about naturally. Is there a whole society of robots who don’t interface or use code to communicate? Or impossibly structured creatures like modrons from D&D? Or was this a cultural initiative to replace the language as a constructed one with no irregularities? Or do you like some other feature but want something similar to have developed organically?

For the “first” option (some kind of creature who by definition work in a very ordered, regular way who developed the language), I’d recommend looking through grammatical guides (you can find them on the site I linked) so you can see why things work the way they do. From there, you can separate things that are fundamental logical concepts that won’t change and things that are effectively arbitrary (phonetics, the specific sounds meant to indicate morphemes, word order to some extent, etc. to name a few things which you can probably change).

For the last option (you like some quality of the language, but want to develop it so it’s more natural), I’d recommend a few steps. First of all, translate a bunch of things you would say a lot, words and phrases (eg yes, no, hello, how are you?, I am [profession], my name is [name], I am tired/hungry/happy/sad, etc.). Say these things out lound repeatedly. If anything is awkward or difficult to say, change it. You can add contractions a la “I’m” for specific constructions or you can make consistent rules about certain sounds like “any vowel follwed by an ‘L’ followed by a consonant loses the 'L’” or “these vowels next to each other become a diphthong instead of being pronounced sperately”. Take these 'rules’ and apply them semi-irregularly. If some specific context doesn’t bother you, leave it. More common things have a lower bar for what is annoying enough to change. Next, make a few different ways to say those things. To go off the list I randomly spouted: yes -> yeah, uh huh, sure, yep; no-> nope, nah, nu uh; hello -> hi, hey, greetings, salutations; how are you? -> what’s up? how’s it going? how are you doing? how have you been? how are you feeling?; I am [profession] -> I do [job], I am [profession], I work as a [profession]; my name is [name] -> I’m [name], I’m called [name], I go by [name]; I am tired/hungry/happy/sad -> I feel [x]; etc., etc.). Once you get through a few basic intuitive things, it’s time to just make up exceptions. If you have declension/conjugation, make a few standard versions. They can be similar, but not the same. Add in some homonyms. Make certain case endings the same (nominative and accusative neuter/objects you pick? @russian and latin and greek) or maybe some verb endings (3rd person singular/plural is pretty common). Just pick some words to be the same, especially if they’re different parts of speech entirely (like rose/rose or saw/saw). Make different verions of some morphemes (eg. un- vs a- vs in- vs non- for negation or -y vs -ish for adjectives or -tion vs -ness vs -ity for nouns). Combine them with other words as arbitrarily correct. If it hasn’t already happened, make 'to be’ irregular. Maybe some other basic verbs like 'to do’ or 'to have’. This is useful for most conlangs: make up rules (or borrow them) and go through and break them a lot.

For the middle option (a cultural initiative), it’s a bit more complicated. It’s very unlikely it would catch on (and if it did, it would almost certainly mutate). The default form would be something like the first, but you’d probably want to think about whatever language they spoke before. If this initiative is new, there would still be a strong influence of that other language. If it isn’t, you don’t need to think as hard about the previous language, but you would want to do at least some stuff from the final option. You could think more strongly about the previous language and take some inspiration from the interactions of English’s Latin (sometimes via French) and German roots. Create duples where words from each language survive but take on slightly different meanings (eg dove/pigeon, lord/liege, mindful/pensive, regal(/royal)/kingly or queenly, bring/carry). The original language would probably be the Germanic/Anglo-Saxon in this analogy and the false-Lojban would be the French/Latin (ie the orignal language would be found more often in more 'basic’ words while 'fancier’ or more technical words would come through in the non-Lojban).

Hope that helps!-M

The amount of times I could have been that white girl in the horror movie could honestly be a movie in itself and it’s honestly a waste that my entire life isn’t constantly recorded on film because it would be HILARIOUS

1. That one time I decided to see what was past the old gate in the woods, but when got there it had been smashed in half and there was a decapitated sheep head with no skin just off the trail, so instead I just turned around and went home.

2. That time some friends and I went camping and we found a pile of bones wrapped in a garbage bag buried under a log, but the adult supervisor told us it was nothing, so we just put it back and didn’t talk about it again.

3. The time I was getting chased through the woods at night and I realized “wait it’s dark as fuck” so I just held still until the guy gave up and left.

4. The time this dude said he was in love with me and so he was going to cut my head off and dump my body in a lake, so I told him to grow the hell up, but then he got caught stealing girl’s underwear a day later and I never saw him again

5. That one time in college where I was taking a shortcut on my home at night and a car followed me into a dark alley, so I stared directly into the driver’s side of the window and walked towards it to psych them out

6. The night I was out on a walk and this old guy told me he’d locked his keys in his truck and that he needed someone my size to crawl in through the back window for him, so I told him “you know that sounds super suspicious right” and told him where to find a pay phone for a tow truck instead

7. The one time this random guy on the street said he was in love with me and so he was going to follow me home on my bus, so I clapped him on the shoulder and told him that if he got that close to my bus then I was going to throw him under the wheels, but then this really nice homeless man from Nigeria told the guy to fuck off and then checked to make sure he didn’t follow me onboard

8. That big cat with yellow eyes who I found in a well and brought home who used to put rotting meat in my closet and wake me up by chewing on my face, until I put him back outside and never saw him again.

9. My one cousin who used to come over for the summer who kept calling me ‘piñata’ and hitting me with sticks, until he went back home and was sent to juvie cause he finally got caught torturing animals

10. The time I got lost on the way to a meeting and wound up at a circus tent instead, and got followed by a full-out clown for three vacant street blocks

11. The pet hamster I had when I was seven who would scream all night and eventually escaped by ripping a bar out of its cage and wiggling through the hole. My mom caught it and put it back but it lived another year and a half until one night the screaming just stopped

12. The time I was whistling in the woods and something started whistling back, so I went home

13. That one night at summer camp where a group of girls got together to play ‘bloody mary’ in the lavatory and invited me to come with them so I said “no thanks” and stayed with the camp councillors and drank soup instead.

14. The old abandoned house I just moved into with the door that leads into a big empty room full of dirt and empty cooking pots that I just sort of… locked up forever and never go near

15. Once when I was at an ihop I saw a coffee mug do a full 360º spin with nobody touching it, so I said ‘that was neat’ and never ate there again

16. The time I took a photo of a big old raven sitting on the crucifix on top of the old town church cause it was the most goth thing I’d ever seen, right? But then it swooped down towards me, so I apologized immediately for being rude, and I felt a little silly for a while but the car that hit me on the way home didn’t even leave a bruise so idk be nice to birds

Sorry I know I bring this shit up a lot but sometimes im awake at night and I just. keep thinking

I think the secret to survival is to be good to animals, stay away from men, and say “no thanks” to everything else

We have learned of the higher risks of cancer if a hysterectomy is not completed after five years of being on testosterone.

This is important.  Read it.  Especially if you have been on T for over or close to 5 years.  I have felt these pains.  Even just today.  I have been on T for over 5 years.

Something I have learned and have tried to be less of afraid of as a trans person is that you need to put your physical health above your feelings of shame.  If you’re having a serious medical concern you need to find a doctor you are comfortable with and talk to them.  It’s not fun, it’s not easy to do, but it’s important for your health.

Please, followers, remember to report any and all pain you experience to your doctor.  Do not hide it!  Your doctors are there to take care of you and ensure that you are safely and discreetly taken care of.

-M

Super important!!

Doctors are very casual when it comes to sterilizing trans people and the fact that there doesn’t seem to be any research on how to deal with this problem less invasively is disturbing. Still… if you’re actually going through this it’s good to know that you’re not alone.

transmen are especially vulnerable to doctor's neglect. gynecology is a field filled with professionals who won't give a fuck.

your health is more important than what other people think. everyone deserves a doctor who'll give them proper care.

Brazil's National Museum, property of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - one of the biggest research institutions of the country. Burnt to ashes, set afire by years of underfundind and government neglect.

Found it on Reddit. All of its collection and data on Native brazilian languages gone. Years of history, gone.

Today, the world has a little bit less science in it - and a little bit less hope.

Today the news of Mollie Tibbetts only further solidified just how much of a male preservation agenda both the left and right have.

When white men shoot up schools, the left is quick to say “white people are crazy. We need gun control.”

When brown men commit crimes (especially one that is not in the U.S “legally”) the right is quick to say “Mexicans are murderers. We need boarder control.”

The rigidness of which both sides ignore male violent patterns and try to make it about “race” is a testament to just how much politics is simply a game of “which patriarchy will dominate?”.

Mollie Tibbetts wasn’t murdered because of “illegal immigration” she was murdered because of MALE VIOLENCE.

What that man did to her is typical male behavior (stalking/ chasing her). This has nothing to do with “race”. I never hear stories of female “illegal immigrants” stalking and murdering random women.

I’m so sick to death of everyday turning on the news to see all the crime men committ against women, only for the left and right to make it a political war of “race”.

When you try to mask male violence as a “immigration problem” instead of calling it what it is “male violence” you ignore the root of almost all violent crimes.

When you say “white people are school shooters” you are masking the reality that mass shootings are done by MEN.

And I recall this post by @knaz16 about how all these politics of “race” is all about which patriarchy should reign.

Because if liberals and conservatives were really serious about decreasing these crimes they wouldn’t make it a race issue. They would recognize it’s a male issue. But they don’t because their fight for preserving their patriarchy would fall apart.

When your hair is wavy/curly sometimes there is a fine line between “messy romantic waves” and “evil witch who lives in the woods.”

When your hair is fine and straight there’s a fine line between “sleek and elegant” and “weasel dipped in grease”

When you’re hair is thick there’s a fine line between “gorgeous vibrant bounce” and “holy fuck it’s Hagrid”

There is no difference in the last one

Real Neko Atsume Cats

I know there’s already a similar post floating around, but I had already planned on making my own, and I had very specific breed headcanons! Also, this one includes the most recent cats :3

29/03/2018 UPDATE

good news! finally back to add the most recent kitties.

Also, I previously thought a cat like Socks was an impossible occurrence in real life, but I found out it’s a rare mutation called Karpati! So, see the updated version up there ↑↑↑

Now, without any further ado, the new kitties!

As always I tried to compromise between a close enough match and a decent quality picture. Sorry for the length of this post!

it just keeps getting better!
