“Hey everybody! Here we are in the southern Appalachian mountains. We have a pristine Montane stream ecosystem, as you can see all around us here. I thought I’d make an educational video this morning. It involves this practice right here [gestures to rock pile]. As our national parks and national forests fall victim to human pressure, more than ever, this is something we’re seeing more and more of. Hopefully we can make this video go viral. This stream, as you can see around us right here, is a breeding ground for North America’s largest salamander, the Eastern hellbender. They can get up to 2.5-3 feet long. It’s part of our natural heritage in the eastern United States. When people do this right here - what they consider to be art - they’re actually destroying the breeding ground for the Eastern hellbender salamander. The Eastern hellbender will use flat rocks such as these to make nesting sites in these streams. So here’s what I would like everybody to do. If you care about our Montane stream freshwater ecosystems like this one around us here, when you see something like this, this is what I recommend doing: [kicks down rock pile]. Take the rocks, throw them back into the stream. The Eastern hellbender utilizes rocks like this. It actually feels pretty good to do this! [walks to other pile] This is not actually art, okay? Not only are they harmful for river/stream habits, they can cause hikers to get lost! Cairns are meant to represent the correct path for a trail. We’ve had hikers get lost by following incorrect paths marked by cairns people set up “for fun/art.” Not only do we want hikers to get lost, we want them to stay on the correct path for erosion control and ecosystem protection. Cairn-building “for fun/art” has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, so we keep finding more and more to knock over.

If you want to set up a cairn “for fun/art,” do it in a dry, very rocky area. Don’t take rocks from rivers or streams! But when it’s a bedrock site and there’s lots of rocks sitting around? Sure, fine, whatever. But please please PLEASE knock them down after! Don’t be the reason we have to deploy Search & Rescue for a lost hiker!

schools like ucla temporarily switching to remote instruction is twofold interesting because first, it is a transparent attempt to wait out the disruptive effects of protest by shifting the learning environment into the private space (a capitalist innovation!) of the student's room, which a protest cannot so easily impinge upon; but second, it is something that would not have been possible before the pandemic, before the mass adoption of technologies that could serve accessibility but are now being deployed by the reactionary project. an ongoing pandemic is not reason enough to let students participate remotely—the threat that truths about imperialism will spill into this environment of "higher education", however, is enough to force them to.

The Sorrowful Truth

through a series of unfortunate (drunk) events last night my art ended up in the hands of the dunkin’ donuts CEO. btw

so the thing about going to school for an illustration degree is that basically everyone knows it’s a financial death sentence. so at least once every semester they make you pretend you’re a successful illustrator closing a financially lucrative editorial or advertising deal. in my most recent semester at art college my court-mandated advertising assignment ended in me producing two illustrations advertising for dunkin’ donuts, purely because i had a dunkin iced in my hand when i was frantically trying to come up with a concept the day before sketches were due.

last night i got home for the summer, and as is tradition in my household i showed my parents most of the art i’d created for the past semester. as is also tradition in my household, all three of us were drinking heavily the entire time. this art show included the aforementioned dunkin’ donuts ads.

my mother, several glasses of wine deep, becomes very excited upon seeing the dunkin ads, and tells me she HAS to text them to her brother, who used to work in sales for dunkin. I, also several glasses of wine deep, remember very little about my uncle’s job but know that he is retired. i agree to let her send them to him.

my uncle (sober, presumably) texts her back immediately and says that he loves them and wants to send them to his “old boss” at dunkin. my mother and i (drunk) agree to this. he sends the images to his boss. what everyone has neglected to mention to me up until this point is that my uncle was SENIOR VP OF SALES at dunkin’ donuts and his “old boss” in question is the CEO OF THE COMPANY. my mother relays this information to me while looking incredibly guilty. i start cry-laughing. the ceo of dunkin liked the fake ads apparently. i was unfortunately not offered a marketing position

me: *sips drink* wow this is bad

me: my drink is bad

In all likelihood once its reached you it's already outdated. This post is part of this masterpost series compiling fundraisers for Ghazzah and Sudan. I focus on Ghazzah as I am Palestinian and am more equipped to do verifications as I'm more familiar with my own country and its politics and dialect, but if I know a fundraiser for a Sudanese family is legit I will include it here.

i love minecraft waiting behaviors. Writing on a sign and you can vaguely see your friend hopping around making spontaneous parkour out of the terrain while they wait for you to finish. writing a message in chat and having the person you’re talking to crouch right in front of you or stand as close to you as possible while they wait for you to finish. Finally finishing writing in a book only to see your friend has made several new furniture pieces and/or surrounded you in a cobblestone cube that may or may not have a sign on it. theres something so charming to it
