Her hands gripped Lorelei’s tightly as she was pulled to her feet and she hesitated to let go. Her mind and memory were still clouded and incomplete. Lorelei was the one constant in the mess of what had happened. Whether that was good or bad was still to be discovered.

Sigyn looked toward the bath and nodded once. “Yes… that- that would be best.” She thought of someone finding her bloodied dress and began to panic again. This was not a situation Sigyn had ever seen herself in. But Lorelei was there, helping with everything. And Sigyn was more than grateful.
Slowly, Sigyn released her hands and moved to the screen, disappearing behind it as she disrobed. She hung the dress over the wooden frame before settling in the bath. The warm water both soothing and cleansing.

soon, sigyn’s mind would clear itself and the world would settle; she would no longer feel punch-drunk and woozy, and reason would come creeping back in. but the events would remain cloudy, and that was the insurance lorelei needed. she help sigyn before slipping away to give her privacy — and once the dress was laid over the screen, lorelei gently pulled it down, and folded it up, tucking it away to retrieve it later.

as sigyn relaxed, lorelei moved with a careful ease, securing her a new dress — a soft white affair, with a beaded corset, of pale pink and purple flowers; something in her size. draping this over the screen. ❛ is everything alright with thee, sigyn? doth thee require anything else? ❜

“Hail, fair Lorelei. Tis been far, far too long since last I laid eyes upon you. I have missed thee, in my absence. I hope you can forgive me for being gone so long–the war seemed endless.”

she fixed him with a wary look, sea-hued eyes wide. she indeed kept her distance, unsure if he was playing a game. ❛ has thee come to put the collar on me again? i will die before i wear it once more. ❜

Sigyn followed, her gaze low on the ground as they walked. The chamber was unfamiliar; but she was grateful to be away from the bloodied body. Grateful to be hidden somewhere safe. She sat, as Lorelei instructed, on the stool. Her hands, still stained by the blood, lifted to wipe the tears from her face.

Lorelei was being strangely kind. The Goddesses hadn’t ever been enemies, but friends was not a word Sigyn would have used. Her foot tapped nervously against the floor as she watched Lorelei across the room. Sitting still was nearly impossible; her nerves and A bath was perhaps what she needed. Something to relax; a chance to reflect on what had happened.
“Lorelei?” She called, voice soft.

no one used the word friend to describe lorelei. no one would dare, when there were other poisonous words to use. the siren moved silently, save for the gentle sounds of her skirts. the water was hot, but not too hot, and she pulled a vial fro her skirt — a few drops of twilight lavender added to the water to ease a worried mind. it would also blur the lines between lorelei’s spell and the real world when the time came.

❛ i am here. ❜ she came from behind the ornate screen, and gestured. ❛ the tub is full and if thee would hang the dress over the screen, i will make sure it is burned. the blood will not come out. i shall find thee a dress of comparable measure. ❜ she smiled again, at sigyn, reaching for her hands to gently pull her to her feet. ❛ thee should not worry. i will not let thee be found out, i swear it. i too know what it is like to be imprisoned, and it is not something i wish on thee. ❜

Sigyn didn’t hesitate and leaned into Lorelei’s touch. She nodded at Lorelei’s words; sniffling still, as the tears dripped down her face. Sigyn always saw the best in people. Trusting the Siren was a foolish thing, but Sigyn was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. She had to.

She followed Lorelei blindly. Whatever spell had been placed on her was still fogging her mind. Her feet dragged in on the stone floor; she suddenly felt so tired. The horror and adrenaline of the event slowly fading. “Thank you, Lorelei.” Her voice was weak and soft. Her fingers gripped Lorelei’s arm tightly as they walked, leaving the horrific scene behind them

for a brief moment, lorelei’s black heart felt a pang of guilt — what creature was she to lure this faultless woman down this dark path? to stain her conscience with the blood of another, the fear and the anxiety; there was no real means to this end, save to keep herself out of jail. the king would take no mercy for a man murdered, and see the evil that flowed in her veins. she let sigyn lean against her, supporting her slight frame easily.

❛ thee is most welcome sigyn. ❜ there is a room down a hall or two, that is left unoccupied tonight — the occupant was entertaining a captain of the guard. the bed inside was plush and made, and there was a large tub behind a screen. ❛ i will draw thee a hot bath so thee can change, and wash the memory from thy skin. ❜ her spells were slight, but still there, weaving soft magic in the air. she bade sigyn to sit on a low stool, skirts swishing as she moved to run the water.

A trial? No, Sigyn didn’t want to go through such a tireless and stressful ring. And yet, guilt gnawed at her. She had committed a crime. Or so she thought. Though if Lorelei’s words were true, it was defense. Any jury would see it that way.
Image
Sigyn wiped at the tears on her face and nodded. “Please… Lorelei… do not tell.” She wasn’t sure if she could trust Lorelei. Her gut told her not to; but what other option was there? There was a dead man at her feet; his blood on her dress. She let out a shaking breath. “Please… help me.”

lorelei’s smile bloomed warm and sincere over lush lips, and she dabbed gently at sigyn’s face with a clean part of the handkerchief. ❛ thy secret is safe with me, sigyn, i swear it. come now, do not be so distressed. ❜ sigyn was no murderer, but lorelei was — and the siren would not go easily into that prison again.

Image

❛ let us get thee a new dress, and get rid of this one. the guards will find his body and know nothing of our presence here. ❜ even if lorelei was using sigyn, she was at least being nice about it, and somewhat genuine; you tell a lie enough, you begin to believe it, especially of yourself. she gently looped her arm through the woman’s, to lead her away from the grisly scene.

    “But he-”
Again, the words failed her. Tears stung her dark eyes; her hands shook, still stained red with blood. Regardless of Lorelei’s words, she was beginning to panic. She didn’t remember anything - not even the man’s face.
“I don’t understand!” She moved to Lorelei as she drew closer, desperate and frightened. Sigyn was many things, but a murderer was not one of them. Even in self defense - killing seemed impossible for her. Or so she had thought. Wide eyes met Lorelei’s, panicked. “What happened?”

lorelei’s voice is a dangerous, dangerous thing — there was a reason thor locked that collar around her neck and chained her voice away. a cruel thing, to not let the songbird sing. but in all matters, it was for the safety of everyone else. the room was lit by candles, dark in places where flickering flame could not reach. gently, lorelei took a handkerchief from her skirts, and reached out to take sigyn’s hand, cleaning it of the blood.

❛ he made unwanted advances. ❜ he had done so, but not to sigyn. to lorelei, who had used her charms to make the innocent think herself guilty. ❛ he came at thee, and thee took a weapon at hand. thee is innocent. i can keep a secret, sigyn, if thee does not want a trial. ❜ an pure lamb had wandered into a slaughter; and the wolf took full advantage.

     “Lorelei-”
Her breath hitched in panic. She wiped her palm on her dress; blood staining the light fabric. Lorelei - not once have they have a good encounter; but this was an entirely new level. What had Sigyn stumbled in upon - what had Lorelei done? What had they done?
     “What is this…?”

most would have panicked, at being caught. most would have a story at the ready to make themselves the victim — but lorelei only looked up slowly, as the spell woven around sigyn wore off in delicate threads.

Image

❛ thee mustn’t panic. nothing was done in wrong. ❜ of course, the bloody knife was at sigyn’s feet, not her own. lorelei rose to her full height, stepping over the dead man, her own hands clean. ❛ it was self-defense. ❜ no, it wasn’t, but sigyn proved a good means to an end. the innocent always did. ❛ we will explain it, sigyn. ❜

“One would hope that, as sisters, you would care whether or not I trust you, but that hope has long since been extinguished.” Despite the lack of trust between them, Amora did always care for her sister, something Lorelei surely hadn’t believed in several millennia despite the things Amora had done for her, the grief she had endured when Lorelei was claimed by Hela before one of many of the gods’ rebirths. Her sister seemed to only ever be reborn with more disdain for her only remaining family. What chaos they could bring upon the Aesir if only they had ever managed to work in tandem. “The Enchantress does not settle, the mediocre are only ever turned into pawns. Skurge is The Executioner for a reason, and that reason alone makes him quite exceptional. If only you knew the true power, the curse, of his bloodaxe. Perhaps one day you will       when it calls for your blood. And when it does, I will miss you, Lorelei. Despite your loathing, your resentment, you are my sister.”

❛ the enchantress settles, she just does not see it. ambition has blinded thee, amora, beyond reason. ❜ there are reasons that lorelei is so venomous towards her own sibling. reasons why she has walled herself off and does not let amora in. there are reasons amora cares more for her, than she does for amora. she fixes her sister with a cold, distant stare.

Image

❛ thy beloved will have a very hard time killing me, amora. and if he fails, i will send him back to hela myself. ❜ her threat was not heavy in nature, it was not spoken with poison — the tone she used was the same as the rest of the conversation. her threats were not empty, and she did not have to change her tone to get her sister to see this. she wasn’t worried about skurge, or his axe. eons stretched before this, and would stretch after. for now, she was bored.

❛ sisters in blood only, amora. and even that is quite thin. is thee quite finished? i wasn’t aware thee liked to be outside this long, especially in these woods. ❜ she hefted her basket up, and began to walk back towards her cottage.
