Someone today will read Shakespeare’s hamlet and say omg he’s just like me fr. Another person will read moby dick and proclaim Ishmael as an adhd king.

A person grieving for their recently deceased lover reads the iliad and they watch as Achilles rages and rages and god how righteous anger fueld by love is so devastating that it’s ramifications still affect the world several thousand years later.

We might one day settle down and read the epic of gilgamesh and watch as a king has to accept the death of the person he loved the most. One of the very first stories ever written and it was about coping with death, and how to grieve.

We don’t read classics because they’re old, we read them because they remind us that we are never alone. That a character created over 500 years ago struggled with the exact same problems we all still have today. That even a king from centuries past had to deal with death just like me. That’s what makes stories so powerful–they prove to us that we are never truly alone in what we are feeling.

Also I talk a lot about how embarrassing it is to be in angry love with Wei Wuxian, but when they first have to recite the Wen laws, and he activities little shit mode to be like “I’ll read the Wen laws :)” and then recites the precepts of the Lan Clan—if I was Lan Wangji coming fresh off my clan’s recent massacre, I’d also be so so so in love with him. That’s sexy and deeply romantic on both a personal and a geopolitical level. That’s the best kind of complex and sexy. I’m actually insane about this relationship. We say this a lot on this ole website but biting and biting and ripping and tearing for real, dude, for real.

Imagine you are a teen boy who is nicknamed essentially "We Have Very High Expectations For This One" and also you have to act perfectly because your parents' situationship is so extremely sloppy that it's a political issue, and also you are not very talkative and everyone universally finds you at least somewhat intimidating to approach, and your life is bound by over 3000 rules and some of the most important ones are self-inflicted by your pride, but then suddenly there's another teen boy who is unlike anyone you've met before (derogatory), and he won't stop bothering you, he won't stop going out of his way to tease you, he in fact won't ever leave you alone, he seems to want to spend time with you so badly if only to piss you off, and he seems to view the walls you've built around yourself as a fun little vaulting challenge, but he's also so annoying and irresponsible and disrespectful and charismatic and brave and good at fighting and sweet and loud and boorish and popular with people in every way you aren't, and he won't stop complementing you while tormenting you, and sometimes it seems like you're special?? to him???? but then he flirts the exact same way with someone else, and you've got to remind yourself that, no, you aren't special to him, this is just the Way He Is, so even if destiny seems to keep trying to throw you together, that's just because the universe is fundamentally cruel and you're gonna just compartmentalize this cringe-ass, extremely ill-advised crush because god forbid your pride get hurt, but also there's a moment in a cave after you've saved him and he's saved you and now you're trapped down here together, and you tell him to not flirt with people if he doesn't mean it, and he's accuses you of being jealous, and then suddenly a horrible new possibility occurs--that this teen boy who is unlike anyone you've met before (honorific) knows exactly what he is doing to you, that he is in fact trying to do this to you, that maybe you are not reading into something that isn't there, that maybe you ARE special to him, and there's a very very long pause where you're looking at him and he's looking at you, and you're like "THIS IS IT" without even knowing what "it" is, and then he smiles so brightly like he's figured out a mystery and says, "you've got a crush on that girl!" and NO ONE will ever know how impressive it is that you did not end this conversation by getting up and limping over to the demon tortoise so you can god willing instantly die but unfortunately there's literally years and years more of this bullshit to go

the funniest thing abt the fear of "boohoo what will happen to israel" is like. you should worry about the entire fucking region. what will happen to egypt. what will happen to lebanon. what will happen to jordan. israel's genocidal strategy has put every single country in the middle east at risk. it is deliberately and knowingly feeding every single extremist group out there. the world ignored what the us did to iraq and afghanistan, they got al-qaeda and a hundred other militant groups. they ignored what bashar did to syria and they got isis. you ignore what israel is doing to palestine right now, you will get worse. for those of you who love brutal realism, who want concrete solutions, this is brutal realism. palestinian liberation is not some kind of idealistic fantasy, it is the only concrete solution to achieve any kind of lasting peace. anyone with any sense of geopolitical acuity can tell you what israel is doing is not some kind of secret first-world strategy that only civilized nations are privy to that will eventually work out. what israel is doing (and what biden is whole-heartedly endorsing) is not just abhorrent on a moral level, it is politically suicidal. there is no longer enough cover for arab regimes to look away. there is no cover for the liberalisms of the UN. this is happening in broad daylight. israel is out of control and the most powerful countries in the world are betting on a genocidal horse that will come running right back to their doorstep.

i keep thinking of how this might be the only time in history that we get xfiles fans and mdzs fans in the same place, so lemme take this opportunity to say that if you've seen/read one but not the other i highly recommend you do so!

there's quite a lot of overlap in what interests people to each of these stories, but I'll just say that if you love mystery murder casefics with partners with humongous unresolved sexual tension who also mean the world to each other, corrupt government conspiracies, main characters being unfairly punished for doing the right thing and still standing by their beliefs, and a cute dynamic of banter between a silly guy and his favorite rational person, you'll most definitely enjoy the x-files/mdzs <3 both series are very dear to me and i genuinely think there's something meaningful to get from both of them

Gotta remind myself not to overdo it when looking at beautiful art. There’s this special golden zone where you’re the most inspired and motivated by other people’s art but it’s so easy to slip into overwhelm and get demotivated :(

So…I have this theory in my head that someone might like.

One day one of my relatives decided to open a cafe near the station where I live. He prepared the equipment, bought the materials, and picked the perfect location. I mean, he thought it was perfect. There were almost no similar establishments in the area, so in his opinion this meant he would have no competition. All the people living near the station would come running happily to him yelling “finally some coffee,” right?

Wrong.

His café stood empty for three months and then closed.

Then he tried again, but this time he chose a place where there were many other cafes like his. There were plenty of prettier and more developed competitors around, but his business still thrived.

Some time after all this happened, he explained to me why this was the case. He said that if there are a lot of cafes somewhere, it means that people there like to eat good food. And the more people there are, the more cafes there are.

The funny thing is that this applies to many other areas and professions.

If you see a lot of things made for people in front of you, it means there are a lot of people nearby who really need those things.

Now, when I see a lot of art for a theme/fandom/character, the first thought that comes to my mind is “damn, there’s LOTS of people who really need art. Who want more art. Who will definitely be happy to see my art.”

It doesn’t take away from the difficulties described in the original post, but it’s what helps me stay positive and productive and absorb tons of other people’s art at the same time:)
