Being raised by areligious jews with 0 exposure to christianity outside pop culture is so fun. One time I asked my ex-catholic friend why a picture of jesus had a bristle crown and she looked at me like I was insane. One time I heard someone mention the "lance of longinus" and responded, word for word, "Like from Evangelion?" One time during a history lesson my professor described an important monk and scholar as "Dominican" and I spent the rest of class super confused and hung up on it because I was very sure that the Dominican Republic didn't meaningfully exist as an entity back then, maybe she meant he was a native Taino or something but that's a weird way to say that and I'm pretty sure this was pre- European contact? Apparently it was water?? I guess he was also stabbed on top of being crucified (which feels like overkill imo) and water came out, which was a huge deal in medieval symbolism and also to my medieval poetry professor, who was genuinely shocked and upset that I didn’t know. I was copyediting a college essay for a friend (not on a religious topic), and at one point he referred to "the church" and I highlighted it, with the note "what church?" He called me in tears of laughter, saying "all people raised by evangelicals should hire Jewish copyeditors to keep them grounded" 😂

Don’t spread misinformation just to fit a narrative, Clinton is advocating for there to be a cap on who gets free college so that the government doesn’t have to subsidize the education of people with enough disposable income to pay for it themselves. The plan she’s proposing would have a better chance of being passed, is more cost-effective, and still opens up higher education to low-income individuals who previously couldn’t afford it.

Reblogging this as an example of what the Russian interference here on tumblr was. I have seen some people in the past days casting doubts on Tumblr because the blogs that were banned had social justice content. 

But that was the point exactly. They posted some real things and a lot of half-truths that would appeal to the kind of politics on here and therefore spread disinformation to discourage us from participating in stopping Trump through the only option we had. I’m glad tumblr left these posts up so we could see for ourselves. 

I don’t know if it actually worked on anyone, I hope we all remember to check our sources before making our decisions, but life is short and maybe some people didn’t.  There are plenty of real social justice blogs available still, so I hope we will follow those instead.

She was not. There were SO many posts by her that got big numbers and most of them were fine. That was an illusion so that when she posted things like this it might not click like it would if it were loudly pro- Trump.

Nowadays, it’s not even that much of a case of trolls/bots, some of the biggest ‘leftist’ bloggers on this platform use the method of posting quirky memes and #relatable content to build platforms from which they can spread such fun ideas as Uighur genocide denial, ‘critical support’ for Russia in its denazification of Ukraine, Holodomor denial, general denial of all the atrocities done by authoritarian regimes as long as they used the correct leftist imagery, pretending that liberals and fascists are exactly the same, hoping for a violent revolution that will sweep away all enemies of Totally Real Communism This Time I Swear, etc.

The discussion around electoralism in particular is full of half-truths and misdirection. Yes, the US technically has the ability to elect neither of the two biggest parties into government office. But that will not happen. US ‘democracy’ functions by the first-past-the-post principle, where the first party leader to get more support than other candidates gets to decide the composition of the government. The simple fact is that the Dem and Rep parties are too entrenched to be toppled by a third party option. They both have significant voter bases that will vote for them no matter what.

And this time, if Reps win they are gearing up for sweeping increases to the power of the president, a position that already holds way way WAY too much power as is. There is a chance they’ll get to stack the Unelected Wizard Committee Supreme Court with even more of a conservative majority, allowing for federal level limits or bans on abortion, access to contraception, gender transition, etc.

Biden is absolutely complicit in the genocide of Gaza, and he deserves to be shat on from a great height for it. Continue pressuring him and the Democrats to change their ways, but for the sake of the entire world, it’s vitally important to make Republicans irrelevant. Make them incapable of winning any federal election for the next 20 years, please. Let future political discourse be between the neoliberal and progressive wing of the Dem party, while the fascists seethe and rage impotently.

The entire world is watching what’s happening in the US, and everything you folks do reverberates across the globe. This isn’t a time to be playing around. Go vote.

just to add: in addition to getting right-wing authoritarians elected around the world - especially in what he sees as his enemies (NATO nations, double especially the USA) because that’s his jam and he has much greater freedom to do what he and his oligarch buddies want (strip the workers off the world of all wealth) - Putin is desperate to topple democracy around the world. because he’s beginning to lose his grip on power due to his Ukraine debacle

whenever you see posts that criticize support for our democratic European allies, assume those aren’t homegrown American opinions but instead Putin employees. in the 2016 election, not only did his minions play at sounding like leftists, they also buddied up to the right - so much anti-BLM, anti-European, pro-cop, and pro-authoritarian posting can be traced directly to Russian and Putinian social-media influence actors

This is spam. It’s against TOS and it throws trending completely out of whack, along with being wildly annoying.

I'm glad more people are addressing this because it is a serious issue, arguably as bad as the bot epidemic.

But here it is in the Terms of Service. It's been there long before this shit started happening.

Intentionally tagging incorrect tags is abusing the tag system and therefore against the TOS. The posts that tag shit like images of cigarettes as celebrity names.

That's what the TOS is trying to avoid. Within good reason. OP is right; the longer this is condoned, the more people will join in, the more prevalent this gets, and the less relevant tags will become. Tags will be as relevant here as they are on Instagram or TikTok and shit.

That and it's just fucking annoying and disrespectful to other people's time, all for the sake of scrambling for popularity online whatsoever, let alone Tumblr out of all sites.

So to anyone still bitching on how this "unfair" because you want an excuse to abuse the algorithm to get likes on your dusty ass selfie, please fuck off back to one of those platforms instead.

Just to add to this. Having tags, even a lot of them, is ok, as long as they're relevant. Posting art of several characters and tagging them with the fandom and each character or something is ok. Tagging your selfie as every generic/popular tag you can think of is not.

Yeah - and so will Trump. Like, if you don't vote for Biden, Trump will win, and he will continue to send aid to Israel - in fact, he will likely send MORE aid to Israel. That's the reality of the world we live in.

And, to be honest, any US president will support Israel. Because the USA is Israel's ally. That's how foreign policy works.

So who do you prefer?

Biden, who has helped lgbtq rights, reproductive rights, infrastructure, the environment, lowered medication costs, supported unions, and done MANY good, progressive things,

Or Trump, who we already know is awful. Who we already know will destroy any human rights Biden managed to gain. Who will not help the environment. Who will not help trans people, or immigrants, or women.

Because those are your two choices. And if you think they're the same, you are dangerous to all marginalized people.

There has never been a point in any of our lifetimes where the US wasn't contributing to some atrocity or war crime or SOMETHING somewhere in the world. There just hasn't been.

The president isn't a king, and can't unilaterally impose his will on the country. There is not - and will never be - a candidate who can just wave their hand and only make the Good and Morally Pure Things you want to happen happen. That is not the system we have.

But things can get better, and things can get so much worse.

There is no scenario where refusing to vote and letting Trump win causes FEWER marginalized people to die.
