the absolute BEST rival dynamic is where one of them is like “you are my equal unlike any other, you respect me and my power even if you disagree with my methods, i will only die by your hand and you by mine, perhaps i want your attention perhaps i love you, together we challenge each other to unseen heights, we are each other’s destiny, we are intrinsically linked,” and the other person is genuinely like “please die

Okay, so this may or may not make sense, but you know what I love? "Came back wrong" from a plural perspective. It's like reading about plurality but without the plurality

Everyone expects you to be who you were, but you can't be, because who you were is not who you are. They might as well have been someone else – hell, maybe they were. Maybe the "you" you were and the "you" you are are different people, or different enough to be seen as such. And you've come back wrong but you never came back at all, you just got forced into the body and life of someone else who you now have to be (but are they really someone else if everyone keeps saying they were you?). And you came back "wrong" but the only thing that's wrong is that you cannot perfectly emulate the person you were-but-weren't, for which you are judged as a failure, a monster. You are not allowed to be yourself, you are only allowed to be a "you" you no longer are. That same "you" that never came back, will never come back, that died or disappeared and now you're in their place because someone has to keep this marathon of a life going. You are you but not "you" and how hard must you fight to make people see you instead of the echoes of the person you no longer are (and maybe never were)?

Gives me shivers. I love it.

"Kurapika." His eyes shoot towards Kuroro, dry lips apart, the taste of nicotine growing heavier on his tongue to offset the sweetness of the sound.
Names are sacred. A gift, a blessing. A miracle. The first and last memory of their identity. Their names weren't meant to be uttered out by people like them. The shapes of Kuroro's lips mouthing the syllables not something Kurapika should have ever seen. They were two people who have done nothing but take from each other. Taking not out of emotion. Not anymore. Now, they take from each other out of obligation. Obligation to their people. To themselves. The emptiest of reasons. They've already marked themselves on each other in every way possible, their names being their sole property but now...
Kurapika can't help but think that the way Kuroro says his name is more than enough to make up for the sin.
Every part of you will be my damnation.
"Kuroro."
And I will be yours.

Kurapika prays to his people for Kuroro.
"Are you asking for my worship, Kuroro?"
Left hand cutting through the air between them, Kuroro grabs Kurapika's jaw and Kurapika wraps his chain-armed hand around his neck. Both their grips unmoving, a stable weight at where they lay; not quite gripping, not quite letting go: just holding on.
"I'm asking you to show me your longing. I can do what your god cannot." The trademark expression of reticence on Kuroro's face melts away to reveal something sharper, harder around the edges. "I'll prove to be better than your god. Will that earn me your devotion, Kurapika?"

happy birthday to this little guy right here <3
