they were not setting the best example for the troops they were now in charge of. leia probably thought she was teaming up two of the most strategic people in the rebellion, hoping they would be an unstoppable. little did she know, she was setting this entire team up for failure. half the time nesota didn’t listen to cassian, the other half cassian didn’t listen to nesota. they were inconsistent, messy, and just didn’t work together. several officers had tried to get them to see eye to eye but everything failed.
“ oh i stopped listening after i realized your plan was idiotic, ” the woman snarled back at him, clearly showing no sign of backing down. she would not bow to him ; she would not bend the knee. when he mentions her plan, nesota looks prideful. “ i say we blend in, not break in. i can get us credentials so we look like we’re part of it all. they don’t know our faces so it would be easy, ” she explains.
two steps forward, closer to cassian, “ and no one would be at the risk of being shot. ”
restless feet shuffled as they heard out nesota’s response. a few members of their company looked like they were attempting to hold their tongues —— perhaps wisely so. it felt like the captain’s initial plan involved similar steps , but they dared not say it. best to let superior officers battle out their differences than risk grounding over insubordination.
“ well that just explains it all , doesn’t it ? ” he scoffed , shaking his head as he pointed a finger right in her face . “ you don’t listen . and how do you suppose that’s going to work out for you in the middle of your suggested plan , whose entire success hinges on communication ? ” his gaze , burning with an extreme intensity , remained fixed on hers. all else ceased to exist in that moment —— and cassian swore he saw a little of himself in her as she eyed him right back.
a small , unintentional cough from a fellow soldier sounded , breaking the silence that had momentarily settled. he straightened up , lowered his hand , and focused his eyes elsewhere. “ the fact is , we are likely to be shot at no matter what . kay—too would be happy to relay those statistics to you. ” he raised a hand before the droid could speak , silencing him for the time being. “ you get us the credentials and we go from there. i have a contact planet—side that can secure us a safe house we can run our operation from. ” it was a compromise , and more importantly , an extension of his trust. for everyone’s sake , he hoped she’d accept it , and that he wouldn’t regret it.

“ ARE YOU AND YOUR EGO DONE, NOW? ” the words cut the air like a knife, nearly spat out at him like a poison from her red lips. the woman’s jaw has locked tight and her eyes look as if they could cause a planet to explode. ever since the general asked the two of them to work together, it had been nothing but a fight for leader. both of them were skilled and intelligent, yet refused to acknowledge the other as an equal. many of the other rebel soldiers were beginning to question why the general put the two biggest hot heads on the same team.
once he finally looks at her, the woman continues, “ your plan is going to get everyone killed, including the innocent people. so, for once, can you let someone else come up with an idea so we aren’t all in graves? ” others have no cleared out the area, not wanting to be roped into the argument ; although, some of them were watching from a distance.
“ i have a plan that will actually work. ”

if looks could kill , neither would be left standing. as it is , he draws in a deep breath —— an attempt to combat the tenseness in his muscles as he tries to maintain his stature. there are onlookers , soldiers awaiting their orders. a handful of members of their assigned team are still green , having just completed basic training , and this exchange is no doubt unsettling . cassian has no problem being challenged with well-meaning in mind , but he’s convinced nesota likes to pick fights with him just because she can .
“ if that is your impression , then you were not listening . ” his words are a low hiss —— very much a signal for her to back down . “ but since you are so confident , let’s hear your idea. i’m certain it will be no where near as preposterous as the strategy you presented command for your last mission. ” his tone drips sarcasm , and a brow raises expectantly.
she wanted the floor , right ? well , now she’s got it.
