Sam and Dean Winchester Supernatural 1.14 Nightmare

one thing about eric kripke is he most definitely is gonna take the monster of the week and hit you over the head with the analogy. anyway, this is the episode where sam's powers accelerate from dreams to daytime visions. this is also the episode where the "monster" is a kid like sam with similar abilities and a similar origin story. sam's determination to save max and get through to him instead of exterminate him immediately as they would with any other monster stems from his own desperation to belive that should his abilities accelerate and/or he loses his damn mind that someone would try to reach through to him and not destroy him for the monster he fears he will become.

sidenote: is max's resentment towards his stepmother a reflection of sam's (at this point perhaps not fully cognizant) resentment towards dean for never "saving" him from john?

"you and I were chosen" sam gets a bad rap for being egotistical and selfish. yes, this is a line stemming from ego. the ego of someone who chafed for years under the iron fist of john's upbringing, whose opinion never mattered and whose self-determination was squashed. between choosing to believe that he is a monster beyond saving or that he was "chosen" and now can steer the course of their story, sam's relentless optimism chooses the latter

final note: the conclusion sam comes to at the end that he had it better off with john and that his upbringing wasn't so bad after all is actually so brutally depressing LOL. like damn, you mean you had it better because he wasn't leaving you black and blue and breaking your arm every other week? john didn't have to lift a hand to leave his boys black and blue, he let the hunt do that for him 😏

final final note: "as long as I'm around nothing bad is gonna happen to you" [narrator] several somethings bad did in fact happen to him

thinking about why Dean so adamantly refused to believe that there could be a higher “good” that could save him in this ep and the conclusion I have come to is this: Dean was molded not as John’s right hand man but as his tool, and tools are simply conduits for someone else’s will and vision and journey, a tool is not more worthy than a person of being saved. s1!Dean derives his entire pittance of self worth from hunting, when the tool is wrecked beyond saving it gets discarded and replaced.

i love when fic writers who have clearly never tried any kind of alcohol in their lives try to write someone drinking bc they're always like

"he ordered a tall glass of hard liquor. after three large glasses he was feeling tipsy" like babygirl i can't be sure but i think u just sent this man to the hospital

it's really interesting to me how big steddie is as a ship but how little feedback you'll get on your fic compared to smaller ships. like, below are two fics i posted within days of each other.

the top is a small ship in hockey rpf and the bottom is steddie. the hockey rpf fic got more than double the comments than the steddie fic. even tho as you can see, the number of hits is very close.

but maybe the hockey pairing is more popular, you're thinking. actually, no. steddie has 21,000 fics on ao3 and the hockey rpf ship has...get this...500

do readers think writers are just writing into the void? in that case i'd just keep my writing on my computer and never post it online. feedback is essential and i am a ravenous little goblin that is sustained by fic comments. otherwise i wither and die (move on to another fandom)
