Hi! So this discourse is a poison hellpit. Its worse in certain spaces, but the community is predominately inclusive outside of it because bullying and harassing and fakeclaiming people for having an Unapproved Theory for material experiences is batshit to anyone who doesnt have discourse poisoning.
First off- CDDs (DID, OSDD, UDD, P-DID, etc) are disorders. Disorders have exclusion criteria generally that only allow you to be diagnosed if you have clinically significant impairment or distress because of the aforementioned symptoms. As CDDs have these exclusion criteria- if you are not disabled by your experience of being 'more than one', then you are subclinical for the thing. If its part of a cultural or spiritual practice, you are subclinical for the thing. IE- You dont have it.
If there were not systems that would be excluded using this- the exclusion criteria would not exist.
Therefore, you can be a system without having a CDD.
This is a point that a lot of people refuse to understand despite it being very very simple.
If you are wondering why disorderly and nondisorderly systems share spaces, its because the exclusion criteria didnt always exist. We used to ALL be classified as having a CDD until the DSMV. Regardless of theories, regardless of impairment, regardless of religious practice. This is why the community is the way it is.
We are grouped together because we historically have been in the same boat for experiencing being 'more than one', and together we have stayed.
Some gatekeepers are separatists who feel that the community and its language should only belong to those currently diagnosable, rather than its historical breadth. As they insist that we are so very different- but historically this is not really the case.
We all benefited from the same guides, the same spaces to be ourselves. We all came together and carved out a space, and now some people want to kick out the very people who helped built that space.
For 'endogenics'... The -genic labels, among other origin-related words are theories for existence. With the exception of created systems, these are NOT things you can with certainty be sure of in their entirety.
We dont know why two people with similar trauma and similar support after have one develop DID and the other not. We dont know why its possible to induce true plural experiences that show up on brain scans (see the tulpa FMRI study that sophie linked in another reblog). The brain is a black box and we are all just grasping away at what we can see. Everything is theory and because scientific study has narrow scopes due to funding issues and the spectre of the satanic panic hangs over anything to do with DID, research is slow going.
They are theories people have for their material experiences. All of them. Even the professionally backed ones.
People may have these theories for many reasons, and what one person gives as their reasoning for one theory may be the reasoning another gives for a different one.
People get really mad when people have theories for why they are experiencing something that doesnt perfectly fall in line with the current prevailing clinical theory for CDDs. Having an Unapproved Theory to them is grounds for exclusion and license to abuse.
They might argue that its 'setting you back' if you have the wrong theory. But if you are treating problematic symptoms as they arise, its really not. The problem more comes when lines are drawn in the sand about your theories and you feel you cannot seek help for them because that help is not For You. If anything, it gives people who are not ready to uncover their trauma a place to sit and get help first.
Plurality is the only neurodivergency that people claim you are not experiencing exclusively because you have a theory on why you are experiencing it that people dislike or think is incorrect.
So why do people gatekeep?
There are a number of reasons, the biggest one being that they view systems that dont have The Right Theories as an existential threat. This is because they are often taught (in therapy or by the community) as the only way to self-validate their trauma was really that bad is that their experiences were trauma because they have alters.
This causes anything that even slightly tweaks that justification to be an active threat to their mental stability. Thus they get triggered and lash out. Understandable given they arent given the tools to succeed here, but still not acceptable.
There is also the desire to be seen as 'one of the good ones' and 'not cringe' so they want to weed out anyone who doesnt have the Official Seal Of Shrink Approval from the community as well as anyone who isnt a textbook case that has nothing that is currently considered 'cringe' going on. They want to be accepted so they declare open season on more juicy acceptable targets, but respectability politics never work. Or rather- they never work for long. Eventually the leopards eating faces gang will come for 'the good ones' too, and all that.
Misinformation also plays a big role, as does poor reading comprehension and a few other notable things, but this post is already Wayyyy too long.
TLDR- People are BIG MAD people have what they feel are Wrong Theories and lash out, sometimes with a faux concern trolling lilt. Many do this because they have not learned internal validation of their own experiences. People also dont understand the very books they worship and their contextual history. This causes people to decide to try to expel the people that have always existed in the community and helped build it.
Dont listen to them, yeah?
