I was reading something about Whitestown, Indiana and my eyes nearly popped out of my head thinking it was one of THOSE comically racist towns. Nice to know, at least the name, wasn’t that.

Just saw a post about dolls and how kids play with them, and I remembered that my grandpa, who had real bad alzhiemer's, would buy me and my sisters the same dolls from the dollar store every Friday. It had became a routine for him, and he forgot that he'd already gotten us those toys

So that led to us having a shitton of super cheap barbie knock offs, and my parents could only sneakily return so many

We also had a shitty row boat, because my dad has really bad adhd and no impulse control. He also had no idea how to keep a boat, which meant it immediately filled up nearly to the brim with rain water as it sat next to our driveway for seasons unused

So what's a kid to do with dozens of unwanted barbies and what is basically an above ground pond at this point? I'll tell you

What you do is take those dolls and stick them in the boat very carefully. Then you watch as the seasons change, the temperature gets colder, and the water in the boat freezes as winter takes hold.

You never really forget bringing your mom out to the boat in the dead of winter to show off the homemade river Styx her children have crafted in the backyard, a dozen cheaply made plastic monstrosities carefully positioned to reach up to the surface in a frozen agony

Those dolls stayed in their frozen hell until we finally found someone who would buy the boat, like two years later.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember what the guy's reaction was when he actually came to see it and witnessed the art installation inside

This post went in a direction. I’m glad it did.

it's because the bear wouldn't kill me just for being a woman. the bear doesn't kill me for fun. the bear can be shouted at, and will leave me alone. the bear won't make a tiktok complaining about how i crossed to the other side of the path when i saw him coming. if a bear kills me, it's just being a bear: it cannot understand logic. it is not acting out of malice - just fear or hunger.

bell hooks once wrote about how porches might be the only outside space left for women - it is still the domain of the house while it is also outside-but-safe. when i am in the woods, i am in the bear's home, and he has a right to defend his property. outside spaces - anywhere at night, certain parks in the day - those are often implicitly "owned" by men. i cannot explain the feeling of knowing when you have entered a man's "territory." you walk into a place and just know you are in their space. you get a sick sense - you're in danger.

the other day a group of about 8 men were fooling around in the woods while i walked my dog. i had to go around, take the extra 3 miles just to avoid them. it's okay, i like walking. this wasn't even a #feminism moment. it was just a tuesday.

what a plain and easy question. only one of the situations is seen as a tragic accident. i would rather die and have a park bench erected in my honor rather than have my family questioned about why they let me, an adult, walk in the woods in the first place when i should really be at home in the kitchen.

i worked in retail and food service. i have had women say and do absolutely heinous and abusive things to me - not because i was a woman, but because i was there, and they were angry. the way men treated me when angry was different - it was because i was a woman. you can always feel the difference, how there's an undertone of i'd hurt you worse if i could get away with it. i keep seeing people try to cite stupid statistics. why is there always a strange rage whenever women agree on things? like men can argue their way out of our lived experiences? it isn't a buzzfeed quiz - which of these traumas are you? 10 super cute ways not to fear strange men.

i have actually (thrice!) seen a bear in the wild, by the way. i died each time, obviously, and am a ghost writing to you. (it was scary but completely and utterly fine). the second encounter was a black bear with her cub. she looked at me like - do we have to do this or are we good? my dog was busy sniffing a bush, completely nonreactive. i felt like i was in a sitcom: feminist poet reacts - does she actually mean she'd choose the bear? my only thought was - she's so beautiful. her paws are massive.

and there's a part of me that feels the rage spinning out in a corner. why do we have to come up with quippy little comments in order to teach men empathy. would you rather die in a car accident or due to a mugging? and would you rather your house burn down due to an electrical fire or due to arson? gee willikers - it's almost like we're human people, and want to risk the accident versus the intention.

i would rather my last thought be oh shit, a bear rather than i'm a person too. why doesn't that matter? why don't you care?

camping out on the quad until the university divests, i’ve never been in such a diverse group of people and i’ve never experienced this level of community and camaraderie before

one of the original vietnam war protesters at colombia just spoke and the entire quad was dead silent as we listened to her story and her urgings. again, i have never been more connected than when i’m with this community of people.

going into day 5, no slowing down or stopping.

there was a very inebriated white guy here last night at like 3:30 and i had the absolute delightful pleasure of standing there ignoring everything he was saying, which included such gems as “theocracy is a cancer” (what does that have to do with anything?), “so if you had to choose between the taliban—“ (i didn’t hear the rest of this question because he was rather too drunk to form complete coherent sentences), and “liberals!!” (like just the word shouted rather passionately. i don’t know if it was an accusation or an exclamation or what.)

there was also a completely different white guy recording who came up to me and my group asking “what would you do if i told you i was jewish?” to which we replied “half of us here are jewish, we have challah, do you want some challah? shabbat shalom!” because we LITERALLY just finished praying and singing for shabbat. i mean like quite literally ten minutes prior. it’s both hilarious and frustrating when people try to use judaism as a “gotcha” because on the one hand, that guy chose the worst possible group to approach with that question (we had multiple leaders of the jews for justice organisation present) but on the other hand, he didn’t actually give a fuck about jews. if he did, he would have noticed and recognised the three people with kippahs and all our candles and the challah we had out. but no. judaism is just convenient to them.

anyway, we persist!!

easily one of the quietest days so far, but tomorrow there is a planned counter protest so we’re all preparing for shit to go down. it’ll be day 6 of our encampment so we’ll see how it goes!! there’s easily a hundred of us camped out and more are coming to counter the counter-protest, but we don’t have a good idea of numbers yet.

on a more positive note, we’ve had a lot of culture-sharing events and moments!! a rabbi (who just got back from palestine) came in for shabbat and led us all in prayer before giving a short speech, we all had a traditional palestinian meal, there were people doing henna and people teaching palestinian dances as well as shared yoga sessions and some more speakers.

we’re not going anywhere!! we keep us safe!!

i’m safe, we held the barricade for 5 hours, since around 10 am. counter protesters are still here but they aren’t trying to get into the encampment anymore and their numbers are steadily declining. there were a few beatings by counter protesters and several people were taken to the hospital, and we did had a few people physically accost us to try to get past our part of the barricade but they failed and no one was majorly hurt. i’m mostly uninjured, just a bit bruised and sore.

besides that, overall we are unharmed and things stayed relatively nonviolent. we persist!!

i would like to say several things for the record:

  1. i’m not posting so people congratulate me or say “good job” or whatever, i’m posting as a form of keeping track of the goings-on here. this is a personal account of my experiences for my own benefit and for posterity. i appreciate all the people wishing me well but that’s not the point. focus on palestine, not me.
  2. everything i’ve mentioned on this post is happening in chicago. there’ve been a few people confused and asking me about columbia and nyu, so i wanted to clarify that i am talking about chicago here, not nyc or any other city. my experiences here are not universal, not even to the other chicago-based college students protesting.
  3. FREE PALESTINE

thanks you.
