“Hey! You’ve reached Millie. Sorry, I can’t come to the phone right now. Leave me a message and I’ll get right back to you!” Her voicemail greeted you for the hundredth time.
Groaning, you pinched the bridge of your nose.
“Millie, I’m sorry. Look, I know what I said was completely stupid… I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions, but I wish you would’ve just told me. My hormones are so out of whack right now, just watching the rain pour makes me cry… It’s been a week. But I know I hurt you, so if you don’t want to talk, I understand. But please. Graduation is tonight and I want to be on good terms with you before we walk… Please, call me back. I love you…”
Hanging up, Bucky rested his hands on your shoulders.
“I’m sorry, baby,” He leaned down to press a kiss on your head. Your bump was swollen and massive in the gown you wore for graduation this evening. This type of stress wasn’t good for you or the twins, and you just wanted Millie to be okay.
As you were about to open your mouth to speak to Bucky, your heard your phone go off. Quickly picking it up, you gasped when you read it was from Millie.
I’m fine. I love you too.
You smiled to yourself. Bucky smiled to himself.
“See? She just needed some time to come around… Listen, just worry about tonight. I’m sure after the ceremony is over, she’ll be her normal self.” He assured you. You two were getting dressed together. Bucky had on his well-pressed suit. He couldn’t wait to see you receive your degree for all the hard work you completed this semester, doing it all while carrying twins.
“Just think, baby,” He sighed, wrapping his arms around you from behind. It was getting to the point he could hardly wrap them entirely around your rounded belly. “A few more weeks it’ll be Christmas, and then we just have to get ready for Eliza and Lucas,” He beamed.
The nursery was fully ready and you had packed your hospital bag multiple times once you got a hold of some educational videos of what to bring and what not to bring. Your birth plan was set in stone, and you were simply waiting out the next two months in hopes the twins stayed inside until full term, although you really weren’t expecting that. With the choice of events that had taken place over the last few weeks, your stress levels were constantly rising.
The fight with Millie didn’t do anything to help. Rather, it made you far more worried about what lurked around the corner. You prayed that Millie wasn’t hooked back on drugs, but based on her suspicious behavior the other week when you two met for lunch and the bruises on her forearms… She couldn’t give you a better explanation. You hadn’t even spoken to Nikki, although you were sure Millie told him everything you had said. And honestly, you wouldn’t have wanted to talk either.
You sighed, leaning into Bucky’s touch.
“I know… It’s so crazy to think we’re on the verge of becoming parents, Bucky,” You giggled quietly. Bucky smiled as he kissed your neck lightly. You hummed against him.
“Can’t wait to see these pretty little hands holding one of our own,” He picked up your hands and interlaced his fingers through yours. You ran your fingertips across his left hand, noting the circle of tattoos. Imagining him holding Eliza and Lucas kickstarted your heart, sending a rage of butterflies coursing throughout it.
Smiling to yourself, you leaned closer to his touch as he grazed his fingers beneath the hem of your shirt. Smiling, his lips lined tender kisses down your jawline, your eyes fluttering shut.
“Mmmhm, please tell me I can receive this treatment when we get home later tonight,” You hummed. Bucky grinned to himself, adding more gentle kisses.
“Of course, you can, Doll,” He whispered, cradling your belly.
As you two finished getting ready, you got into the car and made headway for the college. You two listened to music together, but you were experiencing waves of nausea that you quickly linked to stress. The text that Millie had sent you made you wary. That wasn’t in her nature at all. Normally if you two had a fight and you made up, she was rushing to you to apologize. Then again, this was years later, the two of you were older… You just hoped you hadn’t done anything to affect your friendship in the long run. She still had no earthly idea of Eliza’s middle name and you wished for Millie to stick around so she could help you.
The college parking lot was full of people. Students, faculty, and parents of those students who were graduating today. You had told Bucky about your relationship with your parents. You wished yours could be here today to see you walk across the stage and receive your diploma, but you were ultimately thankful you had Bucky and the twins in your life for this celebration.
“You look stunning, Y/N!” Steve said when he saw you. Sam beamed, holding a bouquet of flowers for you. He passed them over and you beamed.
“Sam, thank you,” You whispered, wiping your eyes. He smiled and gave you a quick hug. His other arm carried another bouquet and you pointed at it. “Who are those for?” You asked.
He looked around. “Millie, if that girl would ever show up… I haven’t seen her today,” He sighed.
Your heart quickened. Bucky wrapped his arm around your shoulder and hold you close. As the evening progressed, you were soon in the arena where graduation was being held. You were seated, the gown wrapped around you in hopes of covering your belly for the most part, although you knew the second you walked upstage, your bump would be revealed. Hardly anyone at the school noticed you were pregnant and the friends you made in between classes had yet to figure it out either.
Names were being called and Bucky was seated. The room looked entirely full, minus a few empty seats that had you wondering… Was one of them Millie’s? You even pulled out your phone and shot her a quick message, asking where she was, only to have it read Not Delivered. The reception was bad in the room it seemed and you stifled a low groan as you waited for your name to be called.
Lined up with all the other students who were walking up for their degree, you heard your name be called. Flashing a smile, soft applause was made, and a quick whistle from Bucky had your heart swelling. As you accepted your degree, the names continued to be called. Your nerves were on edge, your ears burning as you silently hoped that Millie was here.
“Millie Roberts,” The gentleman announced. The applause was heard, but no one stepped forward. With furrowed brows, the man looked around. “Millie Roberts?” He asked again.
You quickly turned your head over to see Bucky, and that was when you saw it.
Bucky’s facial expressions were unreadable, but the second he cast his eyes over to you…
You knew something was wrong.
Racing out of your chair, you hurried over despite everyone in the room staring at you with bewildered expressions.
“What’s going on? Where is Millie?!” You practically belted but kept your voice in a tight whisper. You looked at Nikki who appeared to be frantic.
“I don’t know,” He bit his lip. “She left this morning and… She never came back,” He gulped.
