Art of Star Prichard: Comic artist, animator, enthusiastic human being!

Introduction

Got a few new followers over here who’re fleeing from Twitter, and it’s been a bit since I did one of these, so hi! I’m Star, and I draw stuff. I’m a full-time freelance artist with too many projects. I mostly post art here but will occasionally make talky posts (#Star Talks).

I make a fantasy-adventure comic called Castoff! I also have a Patreon for readers who want to read pages early and support my work. (The Castoff blog is over here)

I make art-related and storytime videos on YouTube! I also stream art and games there. I’m a vtuber but my character is basically just an anime version of me, whoops, can’t be bothered to come up with lore.

I have an online store where I sell merch, including my book How to Webcomic, the custom brushes I make for Clip Studio, and a combo of original/fan merch! I also do Artist Alley at anime conventions from time-to-time- mostly in Texas.

I make a podcast about idol anime with a friend called iDOL DAYS!

I play tiefling fighter Emery Black in What’s Left of Us, a D&D liveplay series!

Hello!

NEW CASTOFF PAGE

And we're back.

☆ Castoff is a fantasy-adventure comic about magic kids with glowing eyes on the run from their problems (and the fantasy cops). Contents include magic boys, badass ladies, fight scenes and found family. New pages every Monday and Friday! ☆

(Reblogs appreciated!)

Hey Star!! Would it be okay if I did some castoff panel redraws as a sort of style study/expression practice?? (I've been re reading castoff for funzies and I forgot how amazing it is!! I desperately want to draw the Cuties)

Go for it! But if you post 'em anywhere plz include credit thanks <3

hey Star, I have a few writing questions.

When you write for your comic (or for any project) do you prefer writing it on paper first (like in a notebook) or typing it up in a doc?

Do you find brainstorming ideas and concepts also easier writing it up or typing it out?

What do you do to help you get consistently into the zone for writing?

I feel like I have to push myself to get writing done for script ideas (though sometimes once I do, I then get into a zone and can get a lot done in an hour or so, but this isn't consistent) and wonder if there's any good tips you can give me and anyone else who struggles a bit writing scripts and expressing their ideas onto paper

I wish I was one of those people who could write in notebooks, bc I love pretty notebooks, but if I'm doing work-related writing? I gotta type it. Brain goes too fast hand writes too slow. (I keep a daily journal, but that's just for brain-dumping so I don't need speed)

I'm like constantly brainstorming so I have a proivate Discord server just for me where I dump ideas as I come up with them. It's often while I'm out running errands and at stoplights when driving lmao

As for "getting in the zone": I can only write at night bc the darkness helps me focus, and I usually put some kind of no-words ASMR on in the background. Or some very, very ambient music. i can't write to anything with a beat or too intense of a melody, or it's too distracting. For example: Old reliable. I have written a very large percentage of Castoff with this song looping in the background.

i was bingeing your youtube channel (really cool stuff! thank you for all the good info and fun stories 💗💕 i for sure subscribed. also i apologize if my following question has been asked before, im new and tumblr's search feature CLAIMS it hadnt been asked but we all know tumblr's search bar is kind of broken) and i was wondering if you would consider doing a yearly-or-something-similar compilation video of your past Star's Webcomic Corner??

if your response is "Why?": it could, for one, be an easier video to release during the winter holidays or an additional one to release during that time; and, two, would be helpful for anyone going "what video had that one comic Star recommended??" (i can see that happening to me specifically, hence my asking); and, at least mildly, be a kind of easy place to refer to for "did i/Star already recommend this webcomic?" or "if you look at my Webcomic Corner compilation video for 2024, i already recommended that". im sure there's other reasons. but yeah MY main bias is definitely "Star, i can see me getting fixated on finally having the energy to read a comic you recommended, not remembering the comic's name, and then having no idea where your video naming that comic is. please help future-me with this inevitable issue "

I actually post the webcomic corner promos in isolation as short on my YT channel- I have a playlist for them! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmol6_LKkm3eRuRHBVOMDusQLhFl0uUX9&si=dhU7CelmiFUcCNfE

I just got So confused at your dnd tag for a minute bc the tag I use for me and my dm’s campaign is called “Stars and Solaris do dungeons” and was like. Wait. Hold on. Since when does she Actually Play and why does that art style look so familiar.

yeah the tag is just kind of a catch-all tag for yapping about my various D&D blorbos, I'm in 3 campaigns lol

Also do you recommend any changes to the default G-Pen brush?

I'd fiddle with the pen pressure settings so they behave the way you want them to. It's gonna take some finessing on your end, though- you gotta experiment and get it to feel right with how you draw

Here's what mine looks like. I'm pretty sure there's a way to set it for the program overall but I can't find the option so /shrug.

I adjusted mine so I can get maximum pen pressure at a lower pressure setting so I don't have to press down so hard. That's what that straight bit at the top right of the graph is. I love thick lines and now I don't have to press down so hard to get em
