I want people to know and understand why this was in the questionnaire too.
They did it because they didn’t want to test the blood for HIV/AIDS in the 1980′s. It was kinda pricey, took a few days, and they didn’t want to test it, so they screened for gay men as though that would prevent them from getting HIV+ Blood.
Naturally, people with HIV+ blood still donated (probably without being aware they were HIV+), because it’s not a ‘Gays only’ disease. Straight people got it without ever coming into contact with mlm because HIV/AIDS doesn’t really care that much about your orientation, as it turns out (contrary to the belief that led to this particular rule!).
THOUSANDS received blood that had HIV+ blood. THOUSANDS died because the blood services decided it cost a little too much to check, and a few days was too long. They’re now legally required to screen all blood because of this, and the test now takes a few minutes (not days).
This part of the questionnaire was meant to ‘weed out’ people who maybe could have HIV/AIDS because they decided only MLM would have it, and only people who were in contact with MLM. For some reason, they continue to weed out MLM specifically from being allowed to donate due to the laziness (Not to mention capitalism) of the 80′s, despite the law having changed, the test being faster, and the test being exceedingly cheaper.
Their original intent never worked, and couldn’t work, and was pointless then as it is now. MLM should be allowed to donate blood, especially as it’s going to be tested anyways (And lbr here, two mlm who have had only each other as a sexual partner ever in their whole lives are probably not HIV+… yet they still cannot donate because of the AIDS crisis in the 80′s)
