Photo Safari

We were given the task of recreating images in a specific order and sorting them into the form of a collage. Firstly, our group was split into 2 small groups of photographers and editors, I was part of the editing group so our job is shown on the first image. The second image shows how our photographers got the images sent to us through google docs which allowed for an easy download. Our collage is shown in the final image which displays the creative images our photographers took throughout the college to create the patterns given.

Software Review; Adobe Bridge

Today we were put into groups to choose a software to review. My group (myself, @nicoleduffin4 and @rebeccahunter6) chose to review Adobe Bridge. In this review, we found that Adobe Bridge is a good software to use for your workflow; download, edit, optimise, export.

We had a checklist to fill in for each function of the process;

Download;

1. Import directly from camera/memory card? Yes. We found that Adobe Bridge does allow you to import directly from your camera/memory card.

2. Select which files to import? Yes. You are able to do this on Adobe Bridge.

3. Rename files on the import? Yes. You can choose to rename your files in various ways such as shot date, custom name, etc.

4. Choose where to save the images? Yes, you can choose anywhere on your computer or storage device to save your selected images. In the below example, we have chosen to save the imported images to the objects folder within college files on our USB.

5. Save copies to another folder or hard drive? Yes. A good feature of this software is that you can save multiple copies of your imported images, which means you will not have to remember to back them up at a later date.

6. Add metadata? Yes. This allows you to add the creator of the images and also to copyright your images within the metadata.

ALL STEPS IN THE DOWNLOAD PROCESS ARE DONE VIA ADOBE BRIDGE’S IN SOFTWARE FEATURE, ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER

Edit;

1. Quickly review, select, and delete imported photos? Yes. You can do this via Adobe Bridge’s review mode, or slideshow mode, which is very useful in the editing process.

2. Rate images and filter them? Yes, review mode is useful for this, there are shortcuts you can use to star your images and colour code them, indicating what type of work may need done to your images during the optimisation process.

Image

3. View the metadata of the photograph? Yes, and this feature is very useful as it tells you how your image was shot, and what time and date it was shot etc and also includes any copyright information you may have added during your download process.

4. Rename multiple files? Yes, you are able to batch rename in Adobe Bridge, which is useful if you haven’t done so during your download process, or if you have a selection of images you care to single out from the rest.

Image

5. Add metadata, keywords etc to multiple files? Yes, you can do this in Adobe Bridge.

6. Filter images using the file metadata? Yes, you are able to filter your images in Adobe Bridge using the file metadata, for example, your star rating or colour coding system.

Optimise;

1. Crop photographs using aspect ratios? Yes, you are able to do this.

2. Adjust tonal controls? Yes, these are shown in the screenshot below.

Image

3. Adjust colour controls? Yes you can adjust various colour controls.

Image

4. View the histogram? Yes and an example of this is shown in the tonal controls screenshot.

5. Sharpen images? Yes, shown below.

Image

6. Reduce noise? Yes, shown in the above image.

7. Retouch images? Yes, shown in all the above screenshots for the optimise process.

8. Can you batch optimise images? Yes, you can.

ALL STEPS IN THE EDIT PROCESS ARE DONE VIA ADOBE BRIDGE’S IN SOFTWARE FEATURE, ADOBE CAMERA RAW

Export;

1. Export multiple files? Yes, this can be achieved in the used software.

2. Change the file type? Yes, you can choose different file extensions for your images when exporting.

Image

3. Resize the images? Yes.

4. Embed colour profile? Yes, you are able to select different colour profiles during your export process.

5. Export directly to website or social media? No, you cannot export directly to a website or to social media using Adobe Bridge.

ALL STEPS IN THE EXPORT PROCESS ARE DONE VIA ADOBE BRIDGE’S IN SOFTWARE FEATURE, ADOBE CAMERA RAW

In conclusion, we feel that Adobe Bridge is a good software to use for your workflow process, as it achieves all of the desired steps, apart from exporting directly to a website or to social media, which can be achieved via other software packages.

File Organisation

Folder Tree

In our imaging class today we discussed the most effective methods of keeping important files organised and easily accessible. This involved using a PSD (Photoshop Document). The unorganised folders in the first image were then organised into a suitable method to ourselves to access easily. This also allowed us to access the multiple different layers. We then saved the file as a jpeg as this allows for compression to keep the file small and puts all the layers together.

Introduction to Adobe Lightroom

I was asked to mentor a few students in using Adobe Lightroom today. I talked them through my process of import, edit, optimise, and export.

  1. Select file menu, select import photos and video option.
  2. Select a media source; in my image above, I have selected my College USB, then my people folder.
  3. I am then met with a screen which displays all my images from my people folder, allowing me to decide which ones I want to import
  4. I then select the import option.
  5. Then you select the develop tab at the top right of the screen, which allows you to optimise your imported images.
  6. Once you have optimised an image, press your arrow key to move to the next image.
  7. When you have finished optimising all of your images, you will need to export your images as the optimised information is just layered on top of your original image until saved properly.
  8. To export, you select your file menu and then export.
  9. Under export location, you can choose specific folder, which will allow you to choose where your optimised images are going. Then click export.

ADOBE BRIDGE - OPTIMISING

In our imaging class today we were practising our workflow by using adobe bridge more. I started by adding keywords to my images using ‘people’.

The images on the left are the unedited ones and the right side are the images I edited. I edited features like temperature, tint, exposure, contrast, shadows and highlights.

COMPOSITION In our research class our task was to find a video that appealed to us on learning rules of composition. I chose this video by Peter McKinnon as I enjoy the vlog style of video and he gives clear demonstration of the composition rules.

Video Task (5 shots).

This afternoon in our places class, we were given the brief to produce a video with 5 different shots using different camera shot/ ideas. Me, Rebecca and Jasmine have produced a video using various different techniques. The shots were just filmed using an iPhone 6 and they were edited using iMovie.

The various different camera shots/ ideas which we used consisted of:

- Tilt.

- Reflection.

- Out of focus (Bokeh effect).

- Still camera, whilst object/subject is moving.

- ‘Just because its beautiful’/ moving camera with still object.

USING ADOBE BRIDGE

IMPORT -

To import my images I used Adobe Bridge. I clicked the camera icon to start the import process which allowed me to create subfolders, show my meta data from the camera I used to take the images and add copyright to my images.

EDIT -

During the editing process this is where I select what images I want to take further to optimise. Review mode allows me to quickly look through all my images and select what ones I want to keep or reject. It gives the option to give star ratings to images and also a colour coding system.

OPTIMISE -

When optimising images this allows you to edit the images you chose in the previous process. In the image shown I slightly edited the temperature to give a more blue tint. There is also a white balance option that can automatically fix the area you want.

EXPORT -

To export, I saved my images to a folder I had previously created within my SD card.

In our People class today we focused on Portraiture. We learned about Magnum Photography and from a selection of images we chose our favourite ones which featured different photographic techniques.

Capture: My images were captured using an iPhone 6s camera.

Import: I connected my iPhone to the computer to display my images and used the Lightroom software to import them.

Edit: I edited by narrowing down my favourite images from my SD card and selecting them all together to drag over to Lightroom.

Optimise: To optimise I firstly cropped my images get a better view of the letters, I then slightly edited the definition of each while also adjusting the levels.

Export: I exported my images through Lightroom in order to print them out then I screenshotted the page on a Mac.
