Communities closed beta is here

Hello again! We’re back with an update on Communities, a big idea we had last year that we’ve been working on steadily since then. We’re abnormally jazzed to announce that we’re beginning a “closed beta” phase of this new feature, which means many of you will get to play with it soon!

We want to build this whole thing together, with as much input from all of you as possible. We’ve read and re-read the feedback from our previous post, and we’ve been surveying and interviewing people about this idea for a few months now. But it’s time to open this up even more for hands-on testing.

We’ve already begun reaching out to most of you who interacted with our previous post, as promised, with a survey asking whether you’d be interested in helping (check your email!). Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be using the results of that survey to narrow down who we’d like to help test Communities in these initial batches.

The process is looking a bit like this:

  1. If you received a Communities survey email to your registered Tumblr email address, fill it out! If you’re interested in helping us in this beta test period, that’s your way of potentially getting early access. If you did not receive an email with the Communities survey, don’t fret! Communities will be rolling out to more people as we expand our testing.
  2. We’ll go through the results and choose a diverse range of community ideas to gather a wide array of feedback.
  3. Selected testers will receive a second survey with more detailed questions about their proposed community. Very practical stuff, like the name, title, and description, whether it should be public or private, the About page contents, its own community guidelines, and more.
  4. We will create the new Tumblr community on your behalf using the information supplied. We’re building the tools that will let people create and edit communities themselves, so eventually you’ll be able to change them without needing our help. But for now, we’re creating and editing them for you, as needed.
  5. After we’ve created the community, you’ll be made its first admin. Everything from here on out is up to you – Tumblr staff won’t be in your community (unless you invite us, of course). You’ll be able to invite anyone on Tumblr to your community. However, your community will have a population cap to start, limiting how many people can be in it and invited, as a way of keeping this beta test somewhat contained and manageable for us. We’ll be able to raise that population cap for communities that are growing and if we want to test further in that direction.
  6. And throughout, we’ll be asking for feedback, both in some special communities for everyone in the closed beta, and via more surveys and the Support tickets we receive.

This closed beta version of Communities is far from finished, and that’s part of the reason we want to start opening it up to more of you for feedback. There are a lot of rough edges and known issues, but we think it’s far enough along that it’s usable enough for testing. We need feedback in order to feel like we’re building the right thing.

The very first public community is called “Communities Feedback” for this reason! We want everyone helping us test out communities to tell us about it, so people in this closed beta will be in there by default. We want to use that space to be more public and real-time about new pieces we’re building, bugs we’re fixing, things we know are broken, and answers to common questions. There is an additional, private community for community admins, to help shape how administrating and moderating these spaces will work. And if you don’t want to use those spaces, you can always use the “Feedback” category in our Support form.

Stay tuned for more, and keep an eye on that Communities Feedback space if you’d like to see how things are changing over time.

On a scale from Couldn’t Care Less to Can’t Sleep at Night, how much does it bother you when someone makes it clear that they completely and utterly missed the whole point of something you wrote?

Millions of people have read my books. I know that everyone won't love everything. Lots of them won't even like anything.

And that's a good thing. It's good that different people like different writers and stories, not to mention foods and places. Imagine how dull it would be if we only liked the same things.

So it doesn't bother me at all.

Okay, but I don't think the question was about if someone doesn't like your book. What if someone wrongly thinks your book supports their bigotry or something like that?

For me, it's the same thing. Some people are going to miss the point. That's how it works especially with big numbers of readers. Some will miss it one way, some the other. Even if most people don't.

All you can do is write the next thing, and not obsess about the ones who didn't get it.

This is the Internet. This is where people get stuff wrong in front of millions, if not billions, of others. If you write something here (or it's available via the net), some people will inevitably get whatever you meant wrong.

And who are we to stand in their way?

Why does everyone assume it's something "sus" when I turn off reblogs?

I have never once turned off reblogs just to ruin your fun for shits and giggles.

If I turned off reblogs on something, it's because I was getting harassed.

People of tumblr, I cannot express in words how fucking irritating it is to finally get harassed over a post enough to turn off reblogs, only for the notes to still get filled with "omg why can't I reblog?!" comments.

It's MY post. It's MY inbox getting filled with harassment. I'm not going to keep subjecting myself to shitty comments just so you can reblog a post you will almost certainly forget about as soon as you reblog it.

Why are you people like this.

"People at higher risk for the most severe complications of Covid — primarily those ages 65 and older — should get a booster shot this spring."

reblogging this article because it's right here, but adding to the post that immunocompromised adults should also get spring boosters, and people can self-attest to also get a booster. if you live with or hang out with older adults/immunocompromised adults you should try to get a booster.

Look out for yourself and your community and see if you can get a booster. if you don't have insurance look up Bridge pharmacy programs that will give them for free.

" The CDC has recommended spring boosters for people age 65 and older, at least 4 months after the previous updated dose. As of 3/2/2024, only about 42.4% of adults age 65 and older had gotten an updated vaccine, and many who were vaccinated in the fall may not realize they are eligible for another dose.

In addition to the spring boosters recommended for people aged 65 and older, immunocompromised people are eligible for more frequent vaccination. The CDC states, “You can self-attest to your moderately or severely immunocompromised status, which means you do not need any documentation of your status to receive COVID-19 vaccines you might be eligible to receive.”"

Good news everyone!

Dreamwidth accounts are now completely open and free, instead of requiring invite codes!

Why Dreamwidth is good:

- You have FOUR different privacy levels to choose from with EVERY post: Public, Private, My Access List Only, A Specific Special Access List Only. You can make as many special access lists as you want. You can 'f-lock' your whole journal if you want. Privacy is good!

- All comments stay on your OP, there is no reblogging. No more posts suddenly getting out of hand and running away from you, it all stays central on the OP, and replies are nested into threads! It's like having a little mini message board on every post!

- Tiered privacy--you can subscribe to someone, and you can also grant them access. Separately. This means you can read someone's journal without having to let them read posts you have locked.

- Put your interests in a linked list, if they light up as a link you can click and suddenly see everyone--and every community--that has that interest listed! Make friends! Join communities (comms, as we call them)!

- Communities! Which can also be locked to members only! Communities also have moderators (and rules the moderators may or may not have!), which makes them safer.

- Lots of customisation options for how your journal looks. Back in the day we used to match journal themes with our bffs or lovers!

- Multiple icons! We used to use this feature to have different icons to indicate moods/tones. Fun! Let's bring that back. You can have 15 with a free account, and more with a paid account.

- 100x100 icons! So big! Gifs allowed! Like on AO3!

- MOOD ICONS. This is an extra icon on your posts that has a mood attached. People with paid accounts have custom themes! Mine is Great Mouse Detective.

- Paid accounts are subscriptions but if they lapse you just go back down to a free account, you don't get your account's functionality taken away! And likewise, the extra icons and custom mood theme are still there; all that changes is if you change your mood theme you can't go back to the custom one until you get a paid account again. Paid accounts just give you extra customisation for how your journal looks, and help support the site, because...

- THERE ARE NO ADS. THERE IS NO ALGORITHM. THERE ARE NO SUGGESTED POSTS. NOTHING IS SPYING ON YOU.

- Please join Dreamwidth!!!

- I have written up a little guide here.

I have been with Dreamwidth as long as it's been available. I endorse this message.
