Whenever I look back on the early episodes of Avatar: the Last Airbender, I realize that Iroh was probably acting a little ridiculous on purpose. He knows that Zuko still has fresh emotional wounds from his cruel, uncompromising father and sadistic sister, and the one source of softness and warmth in his life, his mother, is long gone. Iroh always tried to be a friend to Zuko, but now that his nephew has been scarred and banished, he tries to be goofy and funny and carefree so desperately hard because all he wants is for Zuko to smile and relax again.  If making a fool out of himself is what he has to do, he’d do it a hundred times over.

how dare you give me iroh feels all these years later

that, and it gives him cover to slow things down.

he doesn’t want to capture the Avatar, but he can’t tell Zuko that; he needs time to help his nephew get out of the mindset Ozai’s abuse taught him.

nobody’s going to listen to him if he just tells them to stop - it’s too blatant a betrayal of the Fire Lord’s wishes - but he can play the buffoon; when they get too close, he can lose a piece of his pai sho set and delay the entire operation to replace it.

because he’s a loving uncle, and this is what Zuko needs on that level; but he’s also a genius strategist and an experienced conspirator, and this serves his purposes on a few levels

there’s even a pretty damn direct implication that he’s doing this deliberately. it’s easy to miss at the time, because you don’t have the context, but that first time we see Iroh delay Zuko and the soldiers chasing Aang? it is, as I mentioned, when he loses a piece of his pai sho set, only to realise he’d been carrying it all along

specifically, it’s the White Lotus tile - the one that gave its name to the order of benevolent meddlers he’s secretly been a member of this whole time. there’s no way that’s a coincidence.

Pretty sure I’ve said this before, but Uncle Iroh is possibly the most brilliantly sophomoric character ever written.

Four roommates are extraterrestrials who have taken human form in the hopes of learning about Earth’s culture. Unfortunately, each alien is from a different planet and believes the other three are normal humans.

JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED

The judge who sentenced this sexual predator is Rosemarie Aquilina. Larry Nassar abused over 150 women, including Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, and Aly Raisman. Judge Rosemarie made sure this predator pays the price for each and every one of them. Hella props to this badass judge. Judges around the world need to take notes.

This is a gif of Judge Rosemarie tossing a bullshit letter larry nassar wrote about how “hard” it is for him to hear his victims testify. The level of badassary within this woman is untouchable.

am I the only person finding the judge’s behaviour very unprofessional? she isn’t there to play theatrics, she’s there to pass a judgment. her remarks are deeply unnecessary and wrong.

yep! you absolutely are!

but you know what unnecessary and wrong?

sexually abusing 150+ women and girls for 25 years and having the audacity to write about how “hard” it is to hear their stories.

“I’m not racist, I’d love this character even if they weren’t white”

Oh?

Is

That

So?

You

Absolutely

Positively

Sure

About

That?

Question: Where you around when Aquald/Kaldur was first introduced? Because I was, and I remember people calling him “Blaqualad” from the second his face appeared on the promo.

Not to mention many people had said he was going to die by the end of the season anyway. He was either hated or ignored once the show started, and once he took the position of leadership, a VERY popular trope was that he would die a glorious death so that Robin could take his “rightful place” as head of the team.

There are plenty of other examples. Take the hatred Miles Morales got (and still gets) even though both he and Peter have been able to exist together.

Take the hatred Riri Williams got during her introduction.

Most people are more than happy to erase Duke Thomas as one of Bruce Wayne’s “kids” despite the fact that he’s an original character who isn’t taking anyone’s mantel.

Cyborg has been criticized as “not belonging” to the Justice League since the beginning of New 52. Hell, if anything, ya’ll should be happy that Cyborg’s there, because now they don’t have to racebend a white person. But, nope.

Then there was Rue from the Hunger Games (played by  Amandla Stenberg) who was black in both the movie and the source material, and yet people still went to twitter to express how they “couldn’t sympathize” with her anymore.

We’ve got Michael Burhnam, who’ll be leading the new Star Trek series and people are pissed off about a Black woman in the lead role.

Let’s not forget how the Star Wars fandom felt about having a “Black Stormtrooper” before anyone knew anything about who John Boyega was even playing.

If you were in the Glee fandom, you’ll probably remember how much shit Mercedes got for being just as ambitious as the rest of the Glee kids. And then of course, there were the people saying she didn’t “deserve” Sam Evans.

And then there’s the entire cast of The Get Down that is routinely slept on.

There are the people who demonize T’challa and call him selfish for wanting to Avenge his father (who by the way was the acting monarch of a nation, so T’challa’s quest for answers was also a way of preventing a political fallout.)

And I haven’t even mentioned Sam Wilson, James Rhodes, Mike Peterson, Luke Cage,  John Stewart, Amanda Waller, Ben Sisko, or Ororo Munroe. I’ll give you a hint…all of those characters are crapped on and held to a ridiculously high standard that white characters aren’t held to.. .

So, instead of saying “Make your own original characters” instead, ya’ll can just say, “I don’t want Black people in my stories”

At least then, it’ll save us all some time.
