Uh, so, about... me.

Since I got an ask about this -- guys, I don’t ever look in the “nkjemisin” tag. I went away for a while but before that I was on Tumblr for years and I know how this place works (tho there have been some changes, I notice). I get that most of the folks in that tag are talking about my work, not to me. I will never interact with anyone in this tag unless they reach out to me first, so relax.

I do follow tags specific to my work, however -- e.g. “great cities” or “the city we became” -- in part because I love seeing fanart of my stuff (!), and because I otherwise often miss important media that happens (like say the interview I did with A Very Big-Name Magazine a few weeks back that got posted but nobody told me, sigh) and sometimes that’s the only way I can find out about it. But if that still causes anxiety... Look, y’all.

I don’t care. Like, forreal -- I do not care what you’re saying about me or my work. There was a time back when I was a baby writer when I cared intensely about stuff like that, but years of racists ranting about how I’m The Doom of Science Fiction or whatever pretty much cured me of that urge a long time ago. Review away, bitch away, whatever. Even if I happen to see it, my reaction is likely to be, “Huh. Oh, hey, cat pics/something shiny!” and I guarantee I will forget about whatever I saw in about .024 seconds after that.

Now, this also covers if you’re actually trying to get my attention -- tagging it with nkjemisin won’t work. You’ll need to send an ask, directly.

Re: fanart -- I will always ask before I reblog it! I also get that not everybody wants the attention.

Now to go remember how to pin a post on here.

Your writing hits like Ursula k. LeGuin and Octavia Butler are nodding somewhere. You take the dynamic nature of human phenomena and ask what happens if we hold them still in time to truly examine them embodied in characters.

Thank you for writing the story of Sieh in the Inheritance Trilogy. It’s hard to explain what the god of childhood means to someone who didn’t really get one. With him, I was not bitter or angry or sad at what I missed. Instead, I had a character who was a lot like me to show me it’s possible to change at any time.

Sieh reminds me of Shori from Fledgling in some ways: a lost child with dangerous and other-worldly powers who wants belonging. Both of them are forced to grow up very quickly and make a future with with their chosen families against huge odds.

They both helped me find my joy again after losing it for a very long time and grow again even when it’s hard and painful.

Thank you for your writing.

Wow, all of this is high praise, and I'm honored! Thanks.

I'm sorry that your own childhood was unpleasant. That's one of the reasons why I made Sieh himself unpleasant, in many ways -- because he's all of childhood. The cute and the disturbing, the well-behaved and the feral, the fat happy kids who get to grow up and the starving abused kids who don't always. I'm glad some of that resonated.

Thank you again.

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.

summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.

Examples:

  • summary: Bruce
  • summary: "Bruce Banner"
  • summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk

You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.

The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.

expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.

You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.

otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

I’ve noticed that your novels are published through Orbit, whereas other authors sometimes jump around regardless of genre. Is there a reason you’ve stuck with them with all of your books?

Avatar

Because they've generally treated me well for a genre publisher*, and I don't mess with good things unless I have to. I'm not averse to working with other publishers (I do have secondary publishers for my special editions, etc. -- mainly Subterranean Press), and a few have tried to poach me over the years, but for the most part if I'm happy in a place, I'll stay.

*Folks may recall Publishing Paid Me on Twitter, back in the distant days of 2020, where people were shocked at how small my advances were. Thing is, for science fiction/fantasy, they're pretty good. It's just that SFF pays most writers peanuts.

Hello! I just finished the Broken Earth trilogy (devoured it, really) and I loved every bit of it, especially the depiction of Essun and Nassun's relationship.

That aside, were there specific reasons you chose to refer to the Earth as Father Earth rather than the more common Mother Earth and when in the writing process did you decide on this?

Avatar

Fairly early on. I usually poke at anything that feels like a cliche or an assumption that's gone unquestioned too much imo, and depictions of Earth as maternal/feminine/nurturing bother me.* We're thoroughly adapted to it and should regard it as the only home we've got or might ever have, but that doesn't mean it isn't trying to kill us at any given time. For obvious reasons, I wanted to play this up for the Broken Earth trilogy, so Father Earth was born.

*Lots of cultures regard the Earth as feminine, but there's something about Western lit's treatment of this that feels... weirdly gender essentialist? It's hard for me to articulate without writing an essay, and I'm busy today.

That right there is a good solid burger patty with the intriguing addition of middle eastern spices 👀👀👀 (and as we all know variety is the spice of life, and spice is the variety of food.) I’m also intrigued by how she put the patty in the pita(?) which makes it a sort of burger panini. It looks good and I am going to have to try it.

I want to make this for my family, but my mom’s pretty iffy on beef that is anything but well done (dry as fuck) so I’m wondering how to cook it throughly enough without burning the bread.

You can cook it in very thin pita with a thin layer of minced beef/lamb so that the meat is cooked brown all the way through in only 1 minute per side.

But also! Red Meat is "Well Done" at 160F/72C (white meat is 165F/75C). Bread actually doesn't even toast until 255F/123C!!

So, if you make the full size patties in a frying pan on a low-medium heat, or an oven set to 300F/150C, it will take about 20 minutes to cook instead of only 3 minutes, but it will DEFINITELY not burn the bread, and the meat will be VERY well done.

Here is the oven based recipe I suggested elsewhere on the post

Confirmed: delicious

I'm curious as to what the spices/seasonings in the beef are cause I wanna make this myself so bad

There's always fresh Parsley and Lebanon 7 spice (sabaa baharat), and then in the tiktok there's also onion, garlic, and jalapeno. A lot of people also put in tomato, or tomato paste.

My favourite 7 spice is equal parts:

  • Cinnamon
  • Black Pepper
  • Cumin
  • Cloves
  • Coriander
  • Allspice or nutmeg
  • Ginger or Cardamom

But really, as long as you have the italicized ones, the others can be up to you. Some people use paprika and turmeric, some people use sumac and mint. It's really variable.

Also if you don't want to mix it yourself, a good Garam Masala will have all of these spices and a few more, and makes an excellent ready-to-use substitute.

note that's coriander seed, not leaf (aka cilantro) - coriander seed is amazing, smells like a paradise lemon and is really good in porridge (aka oatmeal) - we're one of those people who can't eat the leaf, but the seed is really delicious and fragrant

internet shaquille made a super accessible video on how to make these, including the spice mix and what to use if you can't access the exact ingredients! it's quite similar advice to what the commenters put above, just in one handy video for your reference

ID: Photo of a street corner; cars are parked on one side, and buildings on the other. Centered is a large cherry tree in full bloom, covered in pink blossoms, lit from behind by the sun.

Already posted this on Bluesky, and I like it so much you get to see too. I don't usually take good photos. That's mostly bc I'm a) too cheap and lazy to bother keeping up with the latest tech, and b) too slow on the draw to catch good shots. I always get entranced by the ephemeral moment, start thinking the kind of weird-ass thoughts that sometimes lead to novels, and then I remember to grab my cellphone ten minutes later. Anyway, this is with a Samsung Galaxy S22, portrait mode. And I got lucky.
