its kinda scary how your whole life depends on how well you do as a teenager

oh my god No it doesn’t don’t put this kind of pressure on people?? you can absolutely fuck up in your teen years and continue on to a good life just fine. you can drop out of school, get a GED, still go to college and finish your degree as late as you want. i know people in my school who still haven’t graduated and they’re 26. some older. you can always transfer someplace else, always build yourself up from the ground. after a certain amount of college credits, a lot of schools really don’t care about your high school GED or your SAT scores anymore. if you fuck up in your teenage years you are not a failure!! you can ALWAYS re-invent yourself, always start over. there is always a second chance.

Reblogging this for my followers freaking out over art school/college. I dropped out of high school and never thought I’d get into college as easily as I did. You will be fine!

Fun story my biology professor just told us:  When he was 23 he was married to his wife and worked two jobs to support them since she was in college: gas station attendant and construction worker.  He worked these two jobs because that was the only work he could get since he was at the reading level of a third grader.

One night he was writing something and his wife noticed he was writing from right to left.  Since she was studying occupational therapy she realized he had a learning disability and started working with him.  He slowly began to learn to read, and at 26 got his GED and went to college.

His first year of college he took the lowest level math course he could take, 001.  Over the years he worked on learning what he needed to, ended up graduating with a biology degree.  He then went on to get his masters and PhD, graduating at the top of his class.  He is now an extremely accomplished biologist and professor.

So don’t let anyone tell you that you’re future is based on your choices as a teenager.

Seriously.  Do not believe this.  You aren’t even stuck with your choices you make in your 20s.  I didn’t start working in my current field until just after my 30th birthday.  It has nothing to do with what I went to school for in my 20s.  My husband has a political science degree, and he’s a sports journalist.

You are not tied to anything.  Go.  Be.

My day job did not exist when I was a teenager. And the idea of trying to be an author was a distant thing on my radar. I thought I was going to be an English teacher. And then I thought I was going to be a music teacher. And then I thought I was going to be a drama teacher.

Also in there: therapist, early childhood educator, then finally: web developer–because by then it was an actual thing that existed. I didn’t actually figure out what I “wanted to do when I grew up” until about eight years ago, when I was 36. I tried pursuing writing when I was 30, stopped, then started pursuing it seriously again when I was 40.

There is always time to change. And don’t let anyone tell you that high school is “the best time of your life” either, because that’s bullshit too.

Reblogging for my followers. My high school teachers didn’t know what to do with me, and I failed everything but a low photography grade. I thought university wasn’t for me, and settled for marrying a mediocre man who spent all day on Warcraft. Then I went to community college. Now I’m in uni doing a double English and philosophy degree, just back from America. I am also single.

Also important: College is not the only option. Don’t let anyone try to tell you it is. If you’re not academically inclined, the trades are an option and they are a good option– if the only thing you think you’re good at is make-up do that. There are people who can live comfortably just doing make-up. We have this idea planted in our heads as teenagers (and younger) that not fitting into an academic mould of some sort means you’re failing at life and this is bullshit. There’s no reason to feel like you’re “failing at life” because you don’t like school or were never good at it. We need skilled workers in the world, and the thing they don’t tell you is all work is skilled work. If it’s work, it takes skill. Yes, this encompasses “service” jobs, it encompasses all jobs. Please don’t think that what you do, or what you have an interest in doing is of less value than something that requires a college education. This coming from the college-educated white girl who is a seamstress because it’s what I enjoy. If college isn’t going to get you where you want to go, than you don’t need to go! It’s that simple. Take whatever path you need to get to where you are happy and comfortable and fufilled. If you’re doing what you love you are sucessful.

i didn’t graduate with my bachelor’s until i was 26 and life took a few turns along the way but now, at 37, i have a job that makes me genuinely happy. and it’s got nothing to do with how well i did in high school.

This! This make me cry… I’m 23 and I really don’t know where I’m going, so reading this kinds of storys makes me feel hope!

I love all this support and inspiring stories, but what I think op was getting at was that our teachers/parents/elders ingrain this idea in us that if we fuck up in our teens, we fuck up everything. So don’t ever let adults make you feel less for needing/spending more time to achieve your goals. You’re still amazing if you get a degree at 24 or 44 or even not at all

time management tips !!

i’ve been getting a lot better with my time management skills. my assignments are done in advance, way earlier than due, or at least on time, and my sleep schedule has been BLESSED with 8 hours so here are a few things i have done to improve this aspect of student life.

* i take 5 classes, play a sport, and have plenty of time to hang out with friends/ watch netflix and youtube.

  1. do work in advance. i’ve said this in previous posts, but it’s really helpful. ask your teachers if there are any homework/textbook notes you can do in advance or big projects to start planning for. in your free time, do some of it because it’ll pay off when the time comes. it’ll be one less thing to worry about on a busy day.
  2. start working as soon as you get home. ok, maybe take a little break when you get home because it’s been a long school day. i limit myself to a maximum of an hour to eat and shower. after that, it’s right to work. you know how difficult it is to start work after relaxing for 3 hours talking to friends or binge-watching a show. you’re going to keep talking or watching or whatever else distracts you.
  3. make an after school routine/schedule or to-do list. base it on your daily work load and the specific assignments you have that day. i personally prefer making a schedule with times because a to-do list gives you more time freedom which may not be the most efficient. here is an example of my schedule during basketball season (since it’s a busier time) :
  4. practice ~ 2:30 - 4:00
  5. get home/shower/eat ~ 4:00 - 5:00
  6. math ~ 5:00 - 5:40
  7. biology (vocab/facts) ~ 5:40 - 6:10
  8. biology notes ~ 6:10 - 7:00
  9. history textbook reading/notes ~ 7:00 - 7:40
  10. english annotations ~ 7:40 - 8:30
  11. english reading explanation ~ 8:30 - 8:50
  12. study/review (relax if none) ~ 8:50 - 9:40
  13. get ready for bed // wind down ~ 9:40 - 10:30
  14. sleep by 10:50 for eight hours ( i usually wake up around 6:50)
  15. use your time wisely. you’re probably thinking, well, duh… this is a time management post, but i’m talking about those extra 15 minutes towards the end of class when your teacher stops lecturing. most of the class will run wild and talk or go on their phones. spend it doing some notes or outlining a project. i always take pictures of my textbooks in case i have free time in a different period because none of my classes are strict about phones. another thing i do is work on homework in class. sometimes, it’s not the best idea, but my biology teacher gives us time to do so. i usually get the concepts in math so i’ll do homework while my teacher is lecturing (not a great habit, i know).
  16. know yourself. know your habits and distractions. know what works for you and what doesn’t. you might have noticed that in my schedule (tip 3) i don’t have any breaks between my assignments. i know i’ll hop on my bed and go on my phone longer than the break would allow. breaks just also generally break my rhythm of productivity. after 10 minutes of doing nothing, i have to get settled back into my efficient mindset which is just a waste of time for me. i also just prefer having a larger chunk of time to chill after all my work. pretty much, do what works for you because everyone is different.
  17. do not overwork yourself. it’s not efficient to work when you’re out of energy. it’s a waste of time and nothing is done with your best effort. take a little bit of time to rest and recollect. then, start working again.
  18. order your assignments accordingly. should you do the hardest or easiest assignments first ? do you prefer doing it period by period ? everyone has different preferences so try out different orders and see what works best for you. i personally order it by amount of time the assignments will take and do the quickest first.

My favorite moment with my D&D group so far

They met a Demon at a crossroads, he said they had to make a deal with him or he would steal their souls. The Fighter was like, “Hey can you just wait for 5 seconds for me?”

Demon’s like: “Alright.”

Five seconds later the Fighter says “Alright our deal is complete”

???

“What do you mean our deal is complete?” said the Demon

“Well I asked you to wait 5 seconds, then you agreed. Since you waited 5 seconds, that means our deal is complete right?”

The Demon is in shock, and so am I, the DM. This fighter just out-tricked a freakin’ demon deal by telling the demon to cool his heels for a moment I couldn’t believe it.

And this is when the demon decides to becoming a recurring pest to the party, or a legitimate threat

He actually did, he sent a “bounty hunter” chain devil named Gnev after the party.

The Bard seduced him.

17 Things I Learned My First Year of College

1. Find all tutoring centers and their locations. Use them.

2. Laundry takes a long time. Don’t sit for an hour on your phone while you wait for your clothes to dry. Take this time to do some homework, do your readings for next class, or catch up on some work.

3. Your schedule needs to suit your needs and your lifestyle. If you can’t bring yourself to open your eyes, get dressed, eat breakfast, and walk to your 8:30 AM class, don’t take an 8:30 AM class. If you have club meetings in the evenings, try to take classes earlier in the day. If you like taking 3 classes back-to-back, do it.

4. Do not spend time rewriting your notes if they’re not going to help you get the information in your head. You don’t need two copies of the same exact words. If your notes are messy or incomprehensible, use this time to make condensed summary sheets instead.

5. Find the gym. Go to the gym. Stay healthy. If you don’t like the gym, you can go running, go biking, play a sport, jump rope, play frisbee, anything. Make sure you are doing something active at least twice a week. It is so easy to get caught up in studying and being busy that you forget to take care of your health.

6. You don’t need to be super good at something to love it. If you’re worried that you’re not in the right major because other people seem to understand everything so quickly on their own while you need to work harder at it, you need to stop worrying. Work hard and do your best. Just because your classmate doesn’t need to study as much as you do, does not mean that you are not intelligent. Stop comparing yourself. There is no shame in getting tutored, there is no shame in failing an exam if you gave it your all. Pick yourself back up, learn from your mistakes, write out your Plan B, and move on. You can do it.

7. Use lysol wipes for your dorm/apartment and hand sanitizer for on-the-go. Wash your hands when you get back from class, before you eat food, after you use the bathroom, etc. You don’t want a runny or stuffy nose during exams, trust me.

8. You look fine. Stop stressing over yourself. No one cares what you look like taking the trash out.

9. You’re going to feel alone sometimes. You’re going to feel like you haven’t talked to people in three weeks. You’re going to miss your friends and your family and you might cry because of how overwhelming everything might get. Drink some cold water, get out of your room, call a friend, doodle, read, watch a movie. Don’t forget about your hobbies.

10. If you have a hold on your university account and cannot register for classes until it has cleared, do what you need to do to clear it before your registration time comes around. Do not wait until the last minute only to find that you can’t register for classes because you didn’t schedule a meeting with your advisor.

11. Go to career fair, even if it’s your freshman year. You’ll get a feeling for what it’s like to dress and talk professionally. There will be a lot of people, and it will be crowded. Take your updated resume with you. Talk to some recruiters. This will prepare you for when you actually need to find an internship or job.

12. Make at least one friend in every class. Not only will this help you talk to new people, but it will also save you when you’re stuck wondering at 11 PM whether or not your professor wants that essay double spaced.

13. Set some goals for yourself and plan how you’re going to accomplish them. Write out what clubs you want to join, if you want to get an internship, find an on-campus job, etc. Know what you want and go get it.

14. You’re going to need to learn how to deal with bugs on your own.

15. Back up your files.

16. Always carry water with you. Always.

17. Time will fly. Make good friends, spend your time wisely, and study hard.

note: This masterpost is mostly made for new studyblrs, but anyone can grab ideas from this post if you are having trouble.

The most common thing studyblr’s think when summer starts is that their tumblr or instagram will get really inactive because well um there’s no school. But don’t worry! Here I have a few things that you can post during summer that will keep your account active, and help motivate yourself during summer.

It’s not for the followers or anything, it’s mostly because of what my school calls the “ Summer Slide,” It’s important that you keep on reading and studying during summer so you can be prepared for what is to come next year, which I think is rlly important!

  1. Khan Academy

If you don’t already know about this, Khan is a website where it teaches you through videos not only math, but some science, history, and even music! A super great website and this goes from elementary to high school math, so in my case, I will be finishing the 8th-grade math course, and finish algebra I and algebra II. If you are a college student, try mathtv (ap math teacher recommended this website!)

Post ideas:

  • Tumblr / instagram: You will have extra time to make your notes nice, so with whatever material you learn, make notes about it !!
  • Youtube: you can do study with me’s! I love love watching these videos bc they help me motivate myself, and others! Spend those extra minutes making everything look aesthetic

        2.  Reading

This is what my literature teacher was talking about!! Make sure to read read read!! My goal is to read 8 novels this summer! ( create a realistic goal for yourself as well! And remember! Make a short term goal because surpassing this small goal feels better than not surpassing a larger goal )

For elementary – high school students, use this website to find books!  You can filter the results to find something that suits you!

Post ideas:

  • Tumblr: you can write a mini book report about a book you’ve read, and use the #bookblr and #book so people from the books community can find your report! Make sure to add in for what grade level, your rating, overall thoughts, etc. !! Yo make sure to tag me if you got some 9-12th-grade book recs
  • Instagram / tumblr: take some nice looking aesthetic photos of the books you read each couple of weeks!
  • Youtube: If you already have book recs, share them with everyone in a video! Label for what grade levels you are recommending these books to!

         3.  Bullet Journal

I feel like this is the most obvious one aha, but share your bujo!! With summer now here, you can have that extra 30 minutes to make your bujo look so extra. (actually me all the time aha) but srsly, here are some ideas for your bujo instead of the regular spreads because there is a 99.9% chance that you will end up posting bujo pics anyway!

  • Make a kpop idol about spread! Choose your fave band, and each week print out some pictures of each member and make a spread that explains why you stan them, or just things that make them special! Find inspo from Queen here!
  • If you aren’t into kpop, choose book characters from your fave book and write about a different character each week, or however long your summer break is!
  • If you are going on vacation, make a travel spread that includes maps, receipts, or aesthetic things you find, and make it look nice! Include reviews about restaurants you have gone to, or things you liked about the country/city and stuff you didn’t etc. ( I have so many ideas I can blab forever )
  • If you want to do the book review thing, but making entire posts would be difficult on you, you can make short paragraph reviews about it as a spread in your bujo, or if you read manga, ( !! ) you can make a review every 3-5 chapters you read!
  • Create mood boards !!! Get some super artsy pics from we heart it or art blogs on tumblr (but always give credits), and create your aesthetic and something that will motivate you to study, or clean, etc!!

For Instagram and tumblr, you can just post these as pictures, and add a nice filter, but with youtube, you can create bujo inspo ideas or the regular “monthly bujo spread”

        4.  Food

Okay, sooooo food is life guys. Share some healthy but yummy foods that will get people who see your posts be super super motivated to eat healthy.

Check out some fun quick recipes here from my fave, that will motivate you to cook! (take advantage of the time you have now!) Make sure to make your pictures/content look nice!

Post Ideas:

  • Instagram and tumblr you can just post some nice aesthetic pictures, along with maybe your weekly bujo spread or something because it’s important to post relevant things since you are a studyblr.
  • Youtube: you can post your weekly meal plan or maybe even teach/show foods you eat while studying, or what you recommend some healthy ( maybe even vegan?) alternatives to your regular junk food.

        5. Queue

It’s understandable that the stuff I mentioned might be almost impossible for some people because you either have sports, music lessons, etc. So posting original content might be difficult. If you don’t already know about this, meet your best friend queue !!

Take 5 minutes out of your day, follow blogs that are going to be active in the summer (maybe even ask?) and queue their posts. In your tumblr setting, you can set up how many posts you want to post from your queue every day, and the time. Since I’m posting original content and stuff every week, I limit my queue for 2 posts every day. During the summer, I’m increasing it to 5 posts every day.

This will help keep your account pretty active, and you can occasionally post your original content! This is totally a solution if you are limited in time

  • For Instagram, try to at least post once a week so that your followers know that you have not abandoned the account.
  • For youtube, let your subscribers know ahead of time that you won’t upload in let’s say, 2 weeks. This is important because when new people find your channel, they will be able to know that “Oh this person hasn’t uploaded in a month because of blah blah” Or you can always let them know to follow your tumblr, since you will be more “active” on there.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Always always always compliment people! In their bujo, notes, or anything they post! That makes everyone happy (:
  • Don’t have your studyblr for the followers. It’s annoying sometimes when people do shout out for shout out on their insta stories.
  • It’s totally okay for your pictures to not be aesthetic. It’s the content that counts.
  • Appreciate the time you have now bc when its school, its crunch time

I hope everyone who read this got something from this and gave you some good ideas on what to post during summer because I see a lot of people just having no idea, so I hope I helped!

Also, if you do any of these ideas or you post videos of reviews or book reports, or make character bujo spreads please please please let me know!! I would love to see inspo on stuff like that, and it would really help me!

Ps: If you want to follow an active account for the summer, I’m all open!

Make sure summer vacation isn’t a barrier from you to keep on motivation others on your account!

school starts for me in a little over a week so i thought i’d make a quick back to school masterpost! this is a compilation of tips that i found helpful from youtube study channels, as well as things that i’ve personally done to make school easier.

  • do your best work as soon as school starts
  • usually the first week(s) of school have a relatively light homework load, but don’t slack off!
  • this is the time to put in the most effort
  • you’ll be able to see which subjects you want to spend more or less time on throughout the semester
  • also, if you turn in great work, participate in class, and go to office hours right from the start, you’re going to keep up those good habits as the school year continues
  • plus, you’ll leave a fantastic impression on your teachers :)
  • use! a! planner!
  • cliché? yes, but it works
  • planners are a great tool to organize so many different aspects of your life, not just school
  • write down your assignments as soon as you get them so that you won’t forget anything, and so that you can plan your day/week accordingly
  • try to space out your assignments if you can so that you don’t spend all of your time on just one subject
  • describe your tasks. instead of saying “study chemistry” (which will turn into binge-watching youtube), say “practice balancing chemical equations”
  • planners are also great for setting and keeping track of goals!
  • BUT, if planners don’t work for you, use some other way to keep track of your tasks and your time - to do lists, schedules, checklists, bullet journals, etc. choose what works for you!
  • just make sure that you keep all of your tasks in one place.
  • break down larger tasks, such as projects or papers, throughout the week
  • do a little every day instead of cramming all the work into one night
  • bonus: try to get your assignments reviewed by someone like a teacher or a classmate before turning them in - most teachers are happy to look at drafts and give suggestions that will improve your work and your grade!
  • also, for big projects, my procrastinating brain has found it helpful to ‘reset the deadlines’ - work so that you’ll finish your bigger assignments a few days before they’re actually due
  • a big part of breaking down tasks and planning is also knowing your own study habits
  • try to figure out how long you spend on certain types of assignments, and know how much time you should allocate to specific tasks
  • when you have a choice, go for meaningful
  • for some assignments, such as essays where you can choose your own prompt, it’s easy to choose the easy prompt
  • but whenever you can, try to go for the prompt that will help you to deepen your understanding of the material you’ve learned
  • teachers who reuse prompts will probably see a lot of the “same” essays every year, so this is a way to stand out in a positive way!
  • if you can, declutter
  • or at least try to clean up your study space for the school year
  • having a neat space to work can really go a long way
  • throw out those old pens that have run out of ink and are honestly just there to look pretty
  • also: invest in good lighting because you gotta take care of those beautiful eyes
  • find classmates who can be your study buddies
  • if you know who the “top students” in your class are, seek out their help! get contact info!
  • if you miss classes or have concepts that you’re having trouble with, you’ll always have someone to ask
  • i mean you should always feel comfortable with asking your teacher for help, but it’s nice to have someone to quickly proofread your paper or review for a test with
  • peer tutors are also a great resource!
  • take the time to establish new habits
  • maybe come up with a morning/afternoon/night routine so that you know you’ll spend some time every day being productive
  • and don’t let yourself off the hook here!!
  • some ideas for habits: hydrating properly every day, working out, getting enough sleep every night, avoiding procrastination, journaling, focusing on one thing at a time / not multitasking, going to office hours consistently, participating in class
  • be honest with yourself. what are some things you do every day that you might not need to do every day? and what are some things you hope you can add to your daily routine?
  • speaking of habits, fix that sleep schedule asap
  • if you want to pay attention in class and turn in good work, you’re going to need enough sleep
  • i would recommend sleeping early and waking up early over sleeping late - it just feels less awful throughout the day and it shouldn’t do as much damage to your sleep schedule as one all nighter will
  • get yo priorities straight
  • learn to say “no” to things that will take up your time but won’t really benefit you
  • recognize that not everything is important
  • that being said! take breaks!!
  • burnout is real my friends
  • a lot of people say that you should use your downtime to work, and you definitely can if you want to and feel able to
  • it’s so easy to feel like you have to be studying or working 24/7, and that’s not true
  • if you feel like you really need a break, take a break
  • spend time with your family and friends! treat yourself with some ice cream! go for a walk (without your phone)! call someone who lives far away from you to say you miss them!
  • being productive is great, and even if you’re the kind of person that can handle that much work without burning out, that stress will release itself elsewhere - some harsh words you didn’t mean, some small thing that annoyed you more than it should have

ok that was a lot crammed into one post, but i have one more important point: be excited for school!!! it may be stressful at times (most of the time) but school is a place where we learn things and better ourselves and open our minds to new perspectives! i am personally so psyched for 10th grade and i think having that attitude will make back to school a lot easier :)

i hope some of these tips help you, and as usual feel free to drop me an ask about anything! i’ll be writing more of these “quick tip”-type masterposts for back to school because they’re a looot less time consuming for me to make (being honest here). let me know what you think of this format! and if you have any requests for masterpost topics i’m always open to those.

paper vs computer notes!

heyoo! so i see a lot of people on studyblr saying “written notes are better” and “it’s scientifically proven that you remember more when you write” and while those claims are true in most situations, life has way too many variables to be that black and white. personally from my experience, i use both and i can tell you that i remember things just fine and i use computer notes a majority of the time. but writing does help me remember some things so let’s look more closely at the specs for both:

A big bang of “how to” stuff

There I was again tonight forcing laughter faking smiles so I made up this long ass post for y'all!

So you a potato. Me a potato. World conquered by we potatoes. But potato need survival tips. So your bro potato help you out. Yay potato. Go go potato.

Study related stuff :

1. Get good grades

  • Catch concepts, not chapters. Your portion is most likely gonna be super vast, so it’s helpful to know a little something from every chapter rather than knowing just 50% of your syllabus.
  • Figure out which concepts are important and master them.
  • Keep all assignments completed at least 1 day before submission date. This isn’t always possible but trust me if you do this you’re guaranteeing marks for proper submission. Job done early? Proof check and add touches to enhance that essay!
  • Let the teachers know that you’re working hard. I actually passed math because my math teacher knew I was working super hard on my math skills. Participate in the class, gather a bunch of doubts and then dump them on your teacher when the chapter ends.
  • Try not to miss lectures because chances are you’ll remember that silly mnemonic your friend made up in class and get the answer correct.
  • Analysis of your exam type is super important. Want me to make a long ass post about it?

2. Be more productive

  • Having a stuydjo/bujo by your side helps hella lot.
  • Plan plan plan. Lists, organise lists and colour code them. Basically become Monica Geller Bing and you’re set for life.
  • Motivational quotes from pinterest almost make me guilty for not being productive and force me to do something.
  • Before starting your study session, dance around to upbeat music for like 5 minutes. You’ll see the difference I promise.
  • Seek out inspiration from your smart friends /tumblr friends /people you look up to by constantly reminding yourself about them. I always think of hermione granger because even randomly picturing her with books in my mind ignites that badass boss feeling complying me to study tf up.

3. Manage your time

  • Studyjo/bujo saves your life.
  • Wear a watch all the damn time, it will remind you of how much time you’re spending doing nothing. You’ll end up saving several extra minutes!
  • List out what you’re gonna do every hour of the day on a sticky note and refer to it when you feel lazy.
  • Get a super nice friend /parent /sibling who will constantly remind you to utilise your time.
  • Think of time as currency and pretend that it’s all a game where you need to save up as much money as you can to become a billionaire. Save up your time and become rich af.

4. Avoid procrastinating

  • Stduyjo/bujo again. You know the drill now.
  • A little bit of exercise before starting work generally works you up and sets the correct mood.
  • Knowing how ahead your friends are from you often makes you wanna catch up so try getting that motivation.
  • Set goals + rewards that actually matter to you. Maybe a face care spa day isn’t your thing but munching on a snickers bar is. Treat yo self.
  • Tell someone a detailed plan of what you are going to accomplish the next day. Now whenever you see that person you’ll want to prove to them that you’re doing what you promised. Or the guilt may drive you too.

Appearance related stuff :

1. Look more put together

  • Try the lipstick trick. There are days when you do not have the time /want to put on makeup, so just put on a lipstick that matches your outfit and you’ll automatically create an illusion of being more put together, boss af and fabulous.
  • Try out cheap (potato can’t afford sorry) but elegant accessories. If it’s a necklace try tucking it under the collar of your shirt and see the magic. Stick to one staple accessory that’s gonna be your trademark.
  • Tame that mane potato. Your hair isn’t gonna detangle itself. You gotta do it. I mean, don’t you love your hair?
  • Minimalistic colours rock. Some outfits never go old like flannels or white shirts or black dresses.

2. Feel beautiful

  • The lipstick does the trick for me.
  • Putting my hair in a sky high ponytail makes me feel like I’m a queen or something.
  • Save little compliments for yourself as reminders and when you get them you’ll feel 10x more beautiful than before.

Mind related stuff :

1. Deal with burnout/slump

  • Try to accomplish super tiny stuff. Break down every task into micromolecular basics.
  • Give yourself a ted talk. It works.
  • Sometimes the best way of dealing with burnout is by detoxing from the thing that caused burnout. Stay away form books and after some time you’ll actually want to study.

2. Study with slumps/mental illness

  • Step one is to finish homework /assignments. If you can concentrate on them, you’re good to go.
  • Do not take up a lot of load, just skimming through textbooks, reviewing notes, going over flashcards should do the trick.
  • If you desperately need to get shit done, just ignore the fact that you do not want to do it. It’s harsh on your mind but desperate times require desperate measures.
  • Avoid forcing yourself to study because you’ll not retain info like that.
  • Take it easy. But consistently. Maybe just one topic a day. But do not miss a day. A steady everyday practice goes long way in the future.

3. Strengthen self control

  • There are several apps that can help you with this, like forest. My top pick is the Tide app which has a gorgeous interface and super aesthetic timers with new pictures everyday. I shit you not every time I quit my pomodoro I feel the guilt of having killed 1000 puppies its worse and I avoid doing that at all costs.
  • If you study in your room, keep your phone in the kitchen for some time. Your lazy ass is less likely to get up and use the phone.
  • Switching the phone off before starting a study session works because I care for my phone like a baby and it feels horrible to switch it on and off and on and off.
  • Practice 30 minutes of digital detox everyday. You don’t have to study at that time, just stay away from everything that is technology. Read and book, eat a fruit, make a sandwich, paint, sing, dance, exercise. Study if you want. Just no gadgets.

4. Deal with stress

  • Yoga works. Potato body ain’t that flexible so just breathing exercises for a start is also enough.
  • Highly recommended : brain dump every night before sleeping can ensure that you’ll not stay up too late pondering over the meaning of your existence and world politics.
  • Having a hearty talk with someone you trust will also lift weight off your chest.
  • Pin point the cause of your stress and annihilate the problem. Slay it.

Life related stuff :

1. Drink more water

  • Carry a cool ass bottle of water with you every frigging where.
  • Make it a rule to have a drink everytime you go to the loo or you take a bath /shower.
  • Replace one of your daily caffeines /sugars with water. You don’t have to get rid of coffee because that’s just non potato ish, but maybe that third cup could be replaced with water.
  • Try a game thingy. Maybe everytime the word ‘procrastination’ pops in your mind take a drink. Wow, I’m so creative *sighs for eternities*.

2. Be more healthy

  • 5 minute stretches right after getting up works you up.
  • Try one of those YouTube videos of 15 minute workouts. You can have 3 such workouts through the day and call yourself a fit potato.
  • Replacing one packet of junk food with nuts/fruits also works.
  • Everytime you hear someone say something related to money, have a banana. Random much? Nope, bananas are known to increase hormones that make you happy in your body, meaning you’ll feel full and happy. Maybe offer the person a banana too.

3. Be more happy

  • Eat bananas!
  • Take pictures of things you love, not things your followers love.
  • Puppies are a source of eternal joy.
  • Reading goofy/cheesy/romance books make you giggle and feel good in general.
  • Watching cheesy films or good ass romcoms works just well.
  • Friends was created for a reason.
  • Writing down what you accomplished today gives a sense of pride and satisfaction. Take that shit.
  • Tumblr has shitposts made basically to make you happy.

4. Find your true calling /figuring tf out what you wanna do with your life

  • Lists lists lists. Subjects you love, you hate, you’re good at, you suck at.
  • Consulting your teachers, family etc and find out what they think you’re good at. Sometimes other people can see traits of yours better than you.
  • Career tests rock.
  • You’ll figure it out in the end somehow.

And that’s about it for now folks, hope this helps. See y'all laterz~

it’s interesting learning which homophobic ideas are confusing and unfamiliar to the next generation. for example, every once in a while i’ll see a post going around expressing tittering surprise at someone’s claim that gay men have hundreds of sexual partners in their lifetimes. while these posts often have a snappy comeback attached, they send a shiver down my spine because i remember when those claims were common, when you’d see them on the news or read them in your study bible. and they were deployed with a specific purpose — to convince you not just that gay men were disgusting and pathological, but that they deserved to die from AIDS. i saw another post laughing at the outlandish idea that gay men eroticize and worship death, but that too was a standard line, part and parcel of this propaganda with the goal of dehumanizing gay men as they died by the thousands with little intervention from mainstream society.

which is not to say that not knowing this is your fault, or that i don’t understand. i’ll never forget sitting in a classroom with my high school gsa, all five of us, watching a documentary on depictions of gay and bi people in media (off the straight and narrow [pdf transcript] — a worthwhile watch if your school library has it) when the narrator mentioned “the stereotype of the gay psycho killer.” we burst into giggles — how ridiculous! — then turned to our gay faculty advisors and saw their pale, pained faces as they told us “no, really. that was real” and we realized that what we’d been laughing at was the stuff of their lives.

it’s moving and inspiring to see a new generation of kids growing up without encountering these ideas. it’s a good thing. but at the same time, we have to pass on the knowledge of this pain, so we’re not caught unawares when those who hate us come back with the oldest tricks in the book.

Even in the 90’s I met people who believed, with the utmost sincerity and a sense of sheer terror, that gay people were agents of Satan who chose to become gay so they could deliberately spread STD’s, deliberately die of AIDs as part of their “fetish” and deliberately offend god into accelerating the end of the world. This does sound like absurd cartoonish nonsense to most people just a little younger than me but I heard it and worse growing up. Millions of people completely, totally believed that kind of thing with the most dire certainty. Today’s lizardman hollow earth anti-vaccine theories actually kind of pale in comparison.

That is what LGBT people were up against not long ago and the remnants of that fantastical-sounding hysteria and fanaticism are not only still here but regaining power again in the U.S. pretty rapidly.

…and I don’t think people should forget that for all I just described and all OP just described, the hatred for trans people was several times worse. Their very existence was treated as UNSPEAKABLE by even the Satanic HIV Apocalypse theorists. This is why it’s so bizarre and ridiculous to see people today whining about “PC culture” like that’s the problem, like people who were condemned as loathsome hellspawn within most of their own lifetimes somehow have it “too good” practically overnight.

do you have any idea what the AIDS funerals were like back then

I will harp on this until the day I die. It’s not information that people have nowadays both because it’s not really needed - thank GOD - and it’s been erased - not so cool.

pastors would take payment to perform the ceremony and then not show up. crematoriums would sometimes refuse to handle the bodies; funeral homes were no better, and my dad once walked in on a mortician dumping rubbing alcohol all over himself after he’d BEEN IN THE SAME ROOM as the body of one of my father’s dead friends. the funerals were held in people’s basements, the very very few churches at funeral homes willing, meeting halls, and in the homes of lesbians, who were some of the most steadfast allies during that time period. The few straight allies pitched in where they could – like that one woman who buried a lot of them herself, in her own cemetery, because their families wouldn’t come claim the bodies – but it was awful.

my dad was a reformed catholic but he knew the words and twice he had to perform the funerals to lay these people to rest because he was the most qualified. I stood next to him as he tried not to cry over his dead friends and to let them rest in peace. I watched my mother, at the back of wherever she was, quietly sobbing, and her lesbian friends who had ACTUALLY watched the person in question die, still comforting her.

I got told by other adults that my entire family was going to hell because we deigned to care for queer people (and my dad especially, as a nurse, deigned to “waste” his knowledge and time and energy on easing suffering).

I was six years old. Freddie Mercury hadn’t even died yet.

recently a friend and I formed a queer social group/activism group and some older gay men came. And they cried, because, and I quote

“This is how it started, back then. we just got together, ten or twelve of us, and decided we were going to do something about it. And we made it out, despite everything, despite AIDS, despite the stigma. And you will too.”

And I had to respond, because I was little, but I was THERE for that, and I grabbed his hands and told him that his history is our history and we need to learn it.

we need to remember. the dead, the living, and their stories.

if you know an older queer person, inquire if they’d be interested in writing down their memoirs. If they’re not writers but want to tell the story, hit me up – I am, and I am absolutely willing to do a living memory.

they’re the only history books we have.

THEY ARE THE ONLY HISTORY BOOKS WE HAVE! It’s so important to record them at last.

Because lgbt+ history hasn’t been recorded, nor told forward by others. What we learn we learn from morgues, criminal records etc. Only ‘unlucky’ persons have been recorded in any ways and most of happy couples, lives and tales have been lost to history as they were not spoken about.

okay listen, i get what you guys are saying about the importance of listening to older lgbt people, obviously, that’s very right!

but you guys gotta know… they are NOT “the only history books we have.” because… we have actual history books. just because they are rarely taught in schools does not mean they don’t exist!

i’ve been keeping a list of all the lgbt books i want to read or reread, which are mostly history, and it is, at this moment, 239 books long. and that’s excluding quite a few that i was less interested in.

obviously, it can’t cover everything; obviously, it is skewed toward white american experiences; obviously, we should always be supplementing it by talking to older people in our community as much as we can. but it does us no favors whatsoever to pretend that all the knowledge in these books is lost to history, existing only in individuals’ minds, when actually so many people have taken great pains to write it down and make it available for us to explore!

so yes, meet older people and talk to them and take them seriously! but also please, i beg of you, read a book.

p.s. a note because i regret not making this clear enough in my original post: there is absolutely nothing wrong with gay men having many consenting sexual partners! homophobes’ statistics are obviously falsified for bigoted purposes, but that doesn’t mean those gay men who do have large numbers of partners are any less deserving of dignity and life, and they too deserve our defense.

I agree with all the above, but also if you are someone who wants to record history or hear more oral histories there are a few oral history archives dedicated to doing this already! It’s possible to engage in that history right now:

  • Here are all the transcripts for the NYC Trans Oral History Project
  • Here’s the ACT UP oral History Project which has videos and transcripts
  • Here’s a list of a bunch of known oral history projects
  • And this is the podcast Making Gay History, which is taped interviews done for the book of the same name (with a bit of context added beforehand)

How I got better grades significantly because I transformed a complete 300 pages textbook in 13 pages (visual learner)

On the following picture, you’ve got a complete textbook before your eyes. On 13 pages. Yes.

The thing that saved me everytime was this: “Know the structure of the textbook and know the textbook”. It can also be about lessons, but I know a lot of people work with textbooks.

(I did it from 5:30am to 19pm with only 2 hours of sleep because my second finals are in one week, so please don’t be mad about my handwriting)

“A new method? I already have one.” I know we all have our methods. If you like yours and have the results your want, that’s good, keep doing it! But if you’re searching for a new one or like to improve your learning skills, and if you’re a visual learner, I suggest you take a look at mine!

  • Best thing that can happen to you: you’ll see a different way of doing things and it can be what you were looking for!
  • Worst thing that can happen to you: this method is not for you but it made you see things differently, or you still learned something different, or it had the motivation you needed today. It’s not wated time if it didn’t work for you! Note besides: I bet you understood that I don’t like regretting something. Regret is just a weight that I don’t need. Instead, I try to take the best of everything that I could be regretting and turn it into a positive thing (I won’t do this again, I’ll do things differently, I discovered something).

<font color="#0B0B61"> The structure of my post: </font>

  • First, I’ll be talking about this method that I recommand for visual learners,
  • Then, I’ll be showing you why this method works for me.
  • Finally, I’ll be talking about how I discovered this method (before I was so done with millions of flashcards, I got inspired by my teachers).

how to: study groups

Study groups can be a wonderful or diastruous experience, but regardless, we all at least think about them from time to time. This post mainly focuses on studying with classmates by your own volition (not under the pressure of study projects)

  • choose your partners carefully. sadly, your (best) friends aren’t always the best choices though for group projects, so if you value the end result, you should pick people whom you know are reliable and just as interested in finishing their job as you are. neither random classmates who, although willing to spend time “studying” but do nothing are a good choice. most of this is learnt through trial and error, though.
  • outline to each individual in the group a clear task. since it is basically a team work, each person should work on something specific. make sure these tasks are equally shared between the persons in the study group, so you won’t end up with two people with the same work, and a subject unconvered, or someone explaining the whole thing to people who didn’t even bother trying to do something.
  • do your studying before you all meet up. make sure your own share of the work is done as well as possible, read all the related materials (regardless of its importance to your own part of the work; it’s good to know what the whole thing is about), go through all your notes. as such, when you meet with your group and discuss each topic individually, you’ll actually revise, and not hear of thse terms for the second time in your life.
  • choose a proper meeting place. the library might be a bit awkward if you need to discuss the subject(s) at large, so here are a few suggestions, tested by yours truly: the canteen, the backyard of your campus/a park (if the weather is nice!), a cozy cafe, one of your rooms (if any of you agree, don’t forget that as guests, you HAVE to bring food and snacks over; it’s just nice). however, it should generally be a place where all of you can concentrate! ;)
  • figure out what works best for you. do you learn better by explaining the information to others? do that! do you prefer listening to someone dissecting a topic that wasn’t clear to you before? ask your group mate? are you better at memorizing on your own? read your notes as the other present discuss the same information; you’ll catch the discussion, manage to interrupt where you need clarification, while at the same time solidifying what you already know by reading.
  • share resources. by this, i assume that there’s at least some little trust between the members of the group. if one has a pdf of the book, share it on dropbox with the others. allow them to print your notes, ask for their annotation. the more knowledge you have, the more sources you read, the best both your own personal work and the group’s will get higher in quality!
  • relax! don’t forget to take care of yourself properly, these study group meetings can go on late into the night and start early in the afternoon, and you’re using your brain! take lunch breaks! hydrate often! take “let’s watch kitten videos on youtube” breaks! talk out a frustrating class with your pals, you might even get to like them! it’s important to be able to be on top of your game the next day as well, so don’t over do it.
  • if a problem arises, discuss it immediately! don’t let arguments unsettled, talk it out if something about whatever goes on bothers you! otherwise, the whole meeting will turn sour and an experience that was supposed to help you, will just leave you bitter. ask about your partner’s well being (mental, especially) every hour or so, and if any of you show signs of getting tired/bored, take a break. be careful to everyone’s needs as well, so you can make the study group work for all!
  • if you’re not up for it anymore, just leave. no need to stress yourself and all those around you by staying there and getting yourself worked up and moody.
  • a study group shouldn’t be the last way in which you study. it’s an eye-opening experience, after which things will be much clearer, and more details would have been added. it is important to go through your materials again at least once after you study them with a group, so you can recall the discussions you’ve had and all the new information; allowing it to settle next to all that you already knew.

i am returning to uni soon and i desperately need to focus on stress management lmao i’m a wreck. this was also highly requested so i thought i’d make it my first one so that it could be useful for those students who are going back to school soon!! this took me way too long rip

tips:

  • self-care is so important; i cannot stress this enough. being unhealthy mentally means being unhealthy academically! studying and getting good grades are important, but there needs to be balance with that and the other parts of your life!!!
  • understanding anxiety is a really big part of being able to handle it appropriately and move through it. you need to partly, if not fully, understand what makes you anxious and why – then you can move forward!!!
  • having good time management skills is also a really big part of stress management; if you don’t have good time management skills, you’ll constantly feel behind and begin to feel stressed.
  • keeping a bullet journal, or just a list of tasks is a great way to be able to visualize everything that you need to do that day/week!
  • using apps or web extensions is also a great way to set reminds and visualize what you have on your to do list.

what is anxiety? what is stress? how do i deal with them?

school + stress + time management

exams + stress

using apps to help with organization

self-care

i hope this helps at least one person. i struggle with anxiety, so if anyone ever needs to talk, my asks are always open!!
