Summary: 1919 England, Emma Cassidy, wife of a baronet, finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage after the war leaves her husband, Neal, paralyzed from the waist down and unable to produce an heir.

Despite the obstacles, she sticks by her husband's side at Goldby Hall, his family's estate, but when she meets former army lieutenant and Neal's aloof gamekeeper, Killian Jones, she feels curiously drawn to his distant blue eyes and quiet demeanor.

At first, she seeks him out for reprieve from her soulless, mundane existence at Goldby Hall, but what starts out as purely physical quickly turns into more than either of them expects.

But Emma is a baronetess, wife of an aristocrat and Killian is a working class servant. Their love affair is frowned upon, and she risks losing her title, her wealth and her position in the world by being with him. But she is determined to get her happy ending with the man she loves. Even if it means losing everything else in the process.

A/N: Despite Emma's last name and marriage to Neal, this NOT a swanfire fic! This definitely ends with Captain Swan so if you're expecting swanfire, this is not for you.

This is the Lady Chatterley's Lover au no one asked for. I had never read the novel but when I watched the newest movie adaptation (there are 4 that I know of), I simply had to write this for CS even though I already have a mountain of wips in my doc. This fic will mostly be following the 1981 and 2022 versions. If you haven't watched the 2022 version, I highly recommend it, if no other reason than to watch Jack O'Connell.

This fic deals with mature themes (some of which the book was banned for back when it was written), adultery, postwar, language, smut.

Chapter One

Emma releases a heavy sigh as she slumps down onto the sofa, relieved the ceremony is over with. If only the day were done too, so she wouldn't have to be subjected to dancing and all the other useless traditions of a wedding reception. Now she has to listen to dreadful toasts and her and Neal's family drone on about how perfect she and her new doting husband are together.

"So, how does it feel?" One by one, her sister, Mary Margaret unbuckles Emma's shoes and pulls them off her tired feet.

Emma shakes her head. "I don't know. Ask me tomorrow." Perhaps then she'll feel differently about exchanging vows with a man she barely knows.

She and Neal had met and courted shortly before he was shipped off to war, and during his leave, he had confessed he'd hated being without her and asked her to marry him. She had said yes and they were quick to get married before he returns to the front. Their fathers may have had a hand in rushing things along as well. Britain declared war with Germany three years ago, heightening Sir Rumpelstiltskin's long-held desire to see his only son marry and produce heirs to their fortune.

Emma's father, Sir Leopold, wants her to have a stable husband, and who better than a man with a hereditary rank and title? She and Mary Margaret were raised in Kensington by Sir Leopold, a royal academician and their mother, Eva, a well-educated socialist, and had what one might call an aesthetically unorthodox childhood. They had been taken to Paris, Florence and Rome to breathe in art, and to the Hague and Berlin for socialist conventions where the speakers spoke in every civilized tongue.

Summary:

Killian and Emma meet in a Tavern in Misthaven and share a wonderful evening together, but both are keeping a secret. This doesn’t last long and when the secret is revealed sparks soon fly. What happens next sees us embark on the start of an adventure where futures are decided.

Notes:

This will be a smuffy story and one that will see our two favourite characters laugh, cry, argue and love each other fiercely.

It is very loosely based on the Benny and Bjorn Musical Chess, specifically alluding to three songs called “I know Him so well,” “Anthem,” and “Heaven Help My Heart.” Some of the lyrics feature in the conversations between Emma and Ruby, and Killian and Liam. I hope that those that know this musical appreciate the tone of the story. What started out as a one shot based around these three songs… let’s say the characters spoke to me and the story evolved. :)

I’d like to thank by beta reader @snowbellewells​ for supporting me with this. If her reactions to this are anything to go by, you are going to love this. :) I have three chapters fully written and edited - and a fourth to finish writing and get to her. This has been sat waiting to be posted for ages so I thought I would drop this surprise.

Chapter One

Princess Emma of Misthaven had been sneaking out of the palace for as long as she was old enough to climb down the trellises outside her window. All she ever wanted to do was walk among the villagers and have some freedom from palace life.

It’s on one of these occasions that she finds herself wandering into a tavern. If she’s shocked by what she sees there she doesn’t let on. She sees a group of men surrounded by several ladies about to play a game she loves. Wanting to be a part of it, she takes a breath, and walks confidently over to them.

“What are you boys playing?” she says, sounding more confident than she feels, but stubborn enough not to back down.

Sharp, blue eyes snap up to meet her green ones. She can see him taking her in, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down as he swallows. Licking his bottom lip before he smirks and regains his composure, he raises an eyebrow and says, “Chess. Do you play…?”

“Swan. Emma Swan. And yes, I’ve been known to win a few matches in my time.”

“Fighting talk, Swan. I like it,” he replies, never taking his eyes off hers, but narrowing them slightly. It’s as if he knows her little secret. But he can’t, surely? She’s never seen him before; she would have remembered a face like his. Plus, she knows everyone who works at the palace.

Trying not to fold her arms across her chest in defiance, she stands tall, thrusting her chest out as she does. “I’m confident. Nothing wrong with that. I’m sorry, I don’t know your name… I’d like to know the name of my latest opponent.”

His eyes fall to her cleavage, before moving slowly back up to her mouth, and then her eyes, “Well, Love. That’s because I didn’t give it to you yet. But trust me I will give it to you…”

She looks at him eyebrows raised. “Firstly, I’m not your love. And secondly, I’m not like other women. If that’s what you’re after here, then I’m sorry for wasting your time.”

Emma stands up and starts to walk away, when she feels a large, warm but gentle hand on her wrist.

“Wait! I’m sorry, Swan. Can we start over? I can see you’re not like the other women here and trust me when I say, that’s a refreshing change. I can promise you, all I want is to play a game of chess. Would you join me, Emma? My name, by the way, is Killian.”

Emma feels herself calming again. She does like playing chess, and he does seem like a worthy opponent. She studies him again, this time taking all of him in. She notes the relaxed yet straight back; a military man perhaps? Well, if he’s only in this port for a little while, what harm could come from a quick game? Then she’ll go back to the palace… and probably dream of him and his blue eyes.

Killian stands there waiting patiently for Emma to make up her mind. He decides there and then that he would wait a lifetime for this woman, who he hopes to see more of, and not just in that way… although he certainly wouldn’t be opposed to that. He can only hope that his brother’s meeting with the King and Queen goes to plan. If it does, Misthaven will become his new home. He knows he should tell Emma who he is, and that he knows who she really is. He’s just about to when she gives him the answer he’s been hoping for.

“OK, Killian. I’ll play with you - a game of chess that is,” giving him a flirtatious look of her own.

All his previous thoughts are long forgotten as she sits down and starts setting the board up, the other members of the table giving up on Killian as soon as they saw he would only have eyes for her.

Sometimes I just really miss the Captain Swan days. I miss the excitement of sneak peeks, of filming spoilers, of watching a new episode (even if it broke our hearts- I’M LOOKING AT YOU, FIREBIRD). I miss the camaraderie with the fellow shipmates, i miss all of it. They were the best and no one will compare ❤️

My memories of the OUAT pilot (+ season one)

Ten years is a long time. I remember watching the OUAT pilot with my boyfriend (who is now my husband) because it was available early to watch via IMDB or some special deal. I remember being hooked, excuse the pun, because the story mashed up all these fairytale characters into one story, and introduced new original characters, Emma Swan and Henry Mills.

I remember starting it in 2012 while on my way to Uni and how I got « hooked » too. I love your post, i find so much of myself in it ! I used to watch it with my boyfriend and theorise as well and I didn’t used to like Emma at all at the beginning. I remember the first time we saw Hook on screen though and I remember thinking « oh I hope we ser more of him » and then when we found out he was Captain Hook I thought « I hope they don’t change the actor ».

Once has always been with me through my difficult times and I was so emotional seeing it go. It could be sad at times but it was always uplifting and full of hope and magic. It was the only show of its kind (and will always be, at least for me)
