FIC REC WEEK 18 – CREATURE FIC

Liquid Lunch by romanoff

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: M Words: 108,185 Tags: Hurt Tony, Dubious Consent, Violence and Torture

Summary: Tony's turned into a vampire. It's very sad for everyone involved. Especially Steve. Not just because Tony keeps trying to eat him alive. There are other reasons too. β€œJust let me try a little bit,” he pleads β€œI won’t take all of it, oh, just a little taste—” He presses his palms flat against the glass and tries to scrape his teeth down the window β€œI can, I can control myself, promise.” And then he turns those eyes on Steve, looks him straight on, and they’re pleading, and innocent, and really, it’s selfish of him not to give Tony his blood, why would he not, he can’t see any justifiable reason, so he just starts rolling up his sleeve and nodding as Tony salivates into the glass.

Reasons why I love it: The angstiest of all vampire fics. Vampires these days have mostly lost their potential to be genuinely horrifying because of how romanticized they are in a lot of media. Which is why I love that romanoff explores the dark side of the trope, bringing back the gorey, unpleasant aspects of vampirism. Plus, the action and angst is superb, and Stony's mutual unhealthy dependency issues are incredibly written. Some of the OCs send genuine shivers down my spine (if you know, you know), and the ending gives me so many different feelings, I don't even know where to begin. I keep coming back to his fic every time I need a dose of horror and despair, and somehow it keeps getting better with every re-read. It's truly a masterpiece, and I highly recommend you check it out for yourself!

I can’t stop thinking about how when Cardan wanted to talk to Jude about the first time they got intimate and she quickly replies she just wanted to get it out of her system, Cardan asks her β€œDid you? Get it out of your system?”

But what he meant was β€œDid you get ME out of your system, because I can’t get you out of mine nor do I want to. I only fell in deeper.”

Her reply about wanting to just get it out of her system hurt him.

When he had said β€œThis is a terrible idea.” as he was kissing her and taking of his shirt, he didnt mean terrible as in things are gonna get weird and akward between them. He meant this was going to rattle him to the bones. This was going to make him fall in deeper for her. This was a terrible idea for him because he knew she didnt reciprocate his feelings and HE was vulnerable and going to end up hurt. It was a terrible idea for HIM.

Steve is the smaller spoon because he loves to listen to the reactor humming.

I have thoughts on this... Yes, Steve wants to be little spoon so he can hear and feel the reactor. But why? Picture this.

Steve has flash backs, this is canonically shown to us. He has trouble sleeping as well, also told to us. Stands to reason he might have night terrors on occasion (flashbacks + bed not feeling like battlefield, i.e., his head and body are still at the war = just makes sense). When he and Tony start sleeping together, the night terrors go away.

Why? The reactor. Yes, the white noise of it is soothing, but it's more than that.

It's what the white noise represents. When Tony is curled up around him, Steve can hear it and feel Tony's strength. It reminds him he is safe. Truley safe. He has someone who not only loves him but also can protect him for a change. Someone strong enough to watch his back the way he always is for other people. He can finally let his gaurd down, let go and just rest. (Also, Tony metaphorically having Steve's back gives even more meaning to Tony physically having his back by being big spoon.)

Flash forward to Tony wanting the reactor removed. Steve supports him because, of course he does. He would never stand in the way of his partner doing something for themselves that they need. And because Steve is Steve, he never told Tony about how the reactor helped him sleep. Shortly after it's removed, Steve starts having night terrors. Tony is obviously freaked out. As far as he konws, Steve had never struggled with them before.

Steve refuses to talk about it. He feels like he can't tell Tony the truth about why he is having them now when he wasn't before because he doesn't want to add any guilt onto Tony. Having the reactor removed was a massive step in Tony's own mental health, and Steve can't bring himself to put his own mental needs over his partner.

But Tony is Tony, and Tony is smart. It takes very little deductive reasoning for him to realize that the night terrors started shortly after the reactor was gone. Also, Tony knows Steve's reluctance to talk about something normally means he thinks he is protecting someone by keeping the information from them. He puts the pieces together.

So, one night, Tony shows up to bed wearing a reactor. Let's call it the prototype for the removable nanotech one (hell, take it a step further, this entier situation is the whole reason Tony even develops the wearable/removable reactor). Steve, not wanting to impose guilt, says nothing. Tony, not wanting to come across and prying, also says nothing.

But every night, Tony wears it, and Steves night terrors go away again.

I hope Jude and Cardan realize that they owned THE SAME 'Alice In Wonderland' book at different points in their childhood.
