not to be that person, but I’m literally teaching high school freshman fahrenheit 451 right now, and one thing that people who never come back to that book don’t remember is that it isn’t just about burning books to keep people from thinking. it wasn’t a government-led top down regime; it was a community/business movement against true human connection (because human connection also allows for human conflict) that trickled up and eventually forced the government to follow suit with laws.
i’m not worried about the government deciding to outlaw free speech; i’m worried about communities/businesses forbidding it in their circles, and then the government going from there.
i’m not worried about the government deciding to keep people numb/stupid so that it can control us; i’m worried about individuals and companies willingly avoiding the intellectual and emotional work it takes to become a developed human/human endeavor—add a little bit of cancel culture/political purism, and boom: once that generation inherits political control, the government follows suit.
don’t let companies receive even the slightest monetary award for products that encourage people to avoid human connection and development. they WILL get the message.
