          ❛ hall, open the goddamn door before i break it down, ❜ called her co-worker from the musty hallway.  she’d heard the pounding from her bathroom – asher had never been a terribly subtle guy.  but ella was having some trouble putting one foot in front of the other, thanks to her good friend jack daniels.  a few feet from the door, she stumbled and fell, head bouncing off the floor.  all asher heard was a thump and a groan, but that was enough for him to make the executive decision to break in.  a few seconds passed as ella lay moaning on the floor, spots dancing before her eyes.  then, the lock clicked and asher slammed the door open, scanning the room.  when he spotted her on the ground, he swore – not this shit again.

          ella’s coworker knelt beside her, waving a hand in front of her face. ❛ hey, moron, what’d you take? ❜

          ❛ jus’ had a little t’drink, ❜ she slurred, squinting at him. ❛ don’t gotta be a dick about it. what’re you doin’ here anyway? s’my day off. ❜

          asher scoffed.  ❛ yeah, i can tell. oh, jesus shit – ❜  he’d spotted the empty bottle on her futon.  ❛ please tell me you didn’t drink that whole fucking bottle, ella. ❜

          ❛ s’not a big deal, ❜ she grumbled, trying to push him away.  she sat up halfway and winced, letting out a short hiss.  ❛ damn my head hurts. ❜

          ❛ christ, hall, little things like you aren’t supposed t’drink that much – what the hell is wrong with you? you tryin’ to kill yourself? ❜

          ❛ the fuck do you care? ❜ she snapped, and the volume of her own voice hurt her ears.  she tried to pull herself to her feet but wound up slumped on the floor again, fighting the urge to vomit.  dammit.

          ❛ ella. ❜ asher’s voice was quieter now, but held the same edge.  ❛ are you – seriously? ❜

          ella felt tears well up and overflow in mere seconds – she didn’t even have a chance to stop them.  dammit.  dammit, what was she doing?  she knew she was fucked up, but why in god’s name was she doing this?  what was she trying to get out of this – relief?  that didn’t come from drinking a whole bottle of jack on her own.  so what the hell did she want?

          relief.  she wanted relief, but she was too far gone to remember the word.  didn’t even know how to describe the sentiment – she was really fucked up.

         asher grabbed her arm and helped her to her feet, letting her lean on him.  she swayed a moment and then lunged for the garbage can, emptying her stomach.  he just picked her up again once she was done, pulling her toward the door.  ❛ c’mon, elle; we’re goin’ to the hospital. ❜

         she mumbled something that sounded like a thank you before passing out.
