I just....I just learned that there's a word in the English language...for when you run into someone to hug them with all the enthusiasm and strength you have....I learned that it's called glomp.

My God, English has so many words to describe physical intimacy, I'm in love

After Ea Nasir notoriously failed in the copper business, he went into computers under the name Ea Games, where he received even more angry letters of complaint than before.

When the OTW was formed and AO3 came into existence, I was on a fandom break trying to “adult.” I missed that part of fandom history.

But I remember individual websites and archives and the C&Ds site owners would receive, pulling it all offline.

I remember when FFN came into existence, and when it did its first purge.

I remember the LiveJournal purges and the creation of blogosphere alternatives for fandom.

MediaMiner. AFF.net’s rise. Having to send a pic of my driver’s license to access certain archives. The yaoi archive that disappeared five or so years ago.

My memory is spotty. I only had my fanfiction purged once. I wasn’t a victim of Strikethrough or its sequels.

And I don’t use WattPad. Never was interested after I joined AO3. But WattPad is hardly the first purge, and always it follows certain patterns.

As a denizen of Internet 1.0, I generally dislike algorithms and the move to monetize all the internet. The monetization is what leads to the purges, and queer folks are always the first impacted, whether they’re “problematic” or not.

Because queer folks and works are always “problematic” in purity culture, and safety is only in numbers, in being united.

Including with what you personally find “problematic,” because they’ll come for you next.

There's definitely some story mileage in a British dude with no cultural sensitivity whatsoever still wanting to return every artifact that Britain has ever stolen out of pure self-interest because one of those motherfuckers is Maximally Cursed and he can't tell which

"Look I'm not woke or anything, but for fuck's sake mate, look at the sheer state of this place and tell me we're not cursed"

i need people do do me a favor and be absolutely normal about it

i have a completely normal coworker who does music and stuff and its good music and i want to send my army of followers to his video on yt and just +like it or something. something to boost him in the algorithm

the issue is no one can let him know this second life i live on the internet because if he finds out i have 25k followers on tumblr or 10k on twitter etc then the questions will flow and i will not be prepared for the conversation about werewolves that follows

Ok heres the video, just +like it and if you want to comment just say you're from reddit or facebook or somewhere

If someone DOES want to share it to reddit that'd be awesome and I'd love you but I dont have an active account there

Just enjoy the music yall. Its honestly really good if you like some classic sounding R&B. The man's voice reminds me of usher to some extent with a little more gravel. Its honestly just sex. Its really really good and he only have 114 subs and the video only has like 90ish likes or something. Honestly its sad. He sounds amazing.

Yes!! Hes REALLY good and his music is giving 90's RnB. It's fantastic and his voice is great and I really want him to blow up

If you're logged into your AO3 account, you can mute any other account on the Archive. Muting means that you will no longer see:

  • works they've created (or co-created) in search results and tag listings (you can still access the works themselves, if you have a direct link)
  • bookmarks they've created
  • other users' bookmarks of their works or series
  • comments they've left

You can mute a user by clicking/tapping on their username (anywhere on the site) to get to their profile page. On that page, you can select the Mute button and then confirm that you really mean to do it.

To unmute them later, you can go to your Preferences page and select the button for Muted Users. Find their name in the list, and select the Unmute button. Then you'll see them on the Archive again.

Is there anyway to remove the "some of the works may not show as you have muted some users" box at the top? I know it's ridiculous but I hate it

You can add this code to a site skin:

p.muted.notice { display: none; }

I linked instructions in another thread on this post, if you need them.

Blocking only stops someone from commenting on your works or from replying to your comments (anywhere on the site). Muting stops you from seeing their works in your feed.

The two functions are separated out in order to give you more control over your experience on the site. Sometimes people who leave harassing comments still write good fic. Sometimes people we enjoy interacting with in comments also write a trope or have a take on a character that we never want to see again.

If there's someone who is both awful in comments and writes stuff you hate, you can both block them and mute them, and you're covered on both bases.

If you just want to remove someone from your feed but you're fine with seeing them in comments, mute them instead of blocking.

Does muting and/or blocking keep them seeing your work?

Nope. They can still see it, unless you archive lock it.
