Elsa’s fear of hurting Anna has always crippled her use of her powers - but with Anna gone and her assailant standing over her, there’s nothing left that can hold her back.

Not to make you guys emotional or anything, but after Elsa realized her parents died trying to find answers for her, the guilt was too strong and at this moment she decided she would continue alone. And if she failed...

this is the last time she thought she would get to hug her sister.

And this is the reason why I think Elsa’s facial expression looks so off when she sends Anna and Olaf away. She doesn’t look sad and this is so not Elsa.

Yes this would be a good reason for this “untypical” behaviour of Elsa. She looks very determined, like in the beach scene before she meets Nokk. I think this experience in the shipwreck and the truth about the true reason for their parents journey changed Elsa deeply. She has now probably realized that this kind of danger might lead to her losing Anna as well. So Elsa couldn't help but trick Anna with Olaf and send her away, because Anna would always follow her no matter what.

Elsa knows Anna would.

And during three years together the sisters learned from and about each other a lot. Anna knows that Elsa is a person that listens to arguments and she does what Elsa does: uses arguments to "win" this conversation. Elsa knows that Anna is a person of action and knowing that Anna won't give up, she decides to "block" her sister's arguments and act.

It reminds me a bit this scene from Frozen:

Kristoff: What are you doing?

Anna: I'm going to see my sister!

Kristoff: You're gonna kill yourself. I wouldn't put my foot there.

Anna: You're distracting me.

Kristoff: Or there. How do you know Elsa even wants to see you?

Anna: Alright, I'm...I'm just blocking you out cause I gotta concentrate here.

Kristoff's arguments touch the heart of the matter, so Anna is ignoring them and even says it aloud, using the first excuse she has in mind. Years later Elsa acts alike, only being an introvert with powers she says nothing and uses her powers to do what she thinks that has to be done.

@bigfrozenfan-archive @super-mam-te-moc Sorry, I guess I didn’t say it clearly. It is actually quite a typical Elsa’s behaviour to send Anna and Olaf away to keep them safe, but what I find atypical is this facial expression:

I imagine she would look sadder and have a more farewell-like look on her face that speaks volume of how heavy this action was to her than this. And I guess the background music at that time didn’t help with conveying that emotion to the audience neither.

To me she looks very determined, she’s almost seeing past Anna, she took her decision in a second and she’s not gonna change her mind whatever Anna says.

When she hugs her it’s like she gives herself a second to hold on to Anna, to enjoy one last hug, and then she puts her plan in motion.

She doesn’t have time to be emotional and even if i don’t like it i guess this is what the scene says i think.

hmm i think her facial exprrssions were okay, she doesn t them express well, and i think she didn t cried sending her sis aways bcs she thought she will left alive from her journey to athohallan so i. think she was sure that she will see her again.
