All this, of course, is to ensure that the Montclairs do not flee to the Spanish sun at the conclusion of the season. Dean and Cas had stepped out into the other room and were having some kind of intense discussion, leaving you alone with Sam in the library. You felt his eyes on you and when you turned to look, his expression was uneasy.

"Do you want me to tell you?" he asked suddenly.

"What?"

He sighed, the corners of his mouth turning downward in an anxious frown. "You've lost your memory, but you're not stupid. We're keeping you in the dark about something. Do you want me to tell you?"

You were puzzled. "...Why? Why would you do that if no one else will? I'm sure there's some reason for not telling me." But your heart was pounding and you were starting to feel a little sick. "So why tell me now?"

Sam looked troubled. "Because—because I think you deserve to know. And I—I care about you and what happens to you. I just... don't feel right keeping it from you anymore. I don't think it's fair and I don't think it's the right call."

You were suddenly fixated on something completely new and not whatever this mysterious, vague cloud was. "But you hardly know me," you said, peering at Sam curiously.

He sighed and ran a hand over his face. "That's just it actually..."

"What do you mean?" Footsteps were approaching behind you and you looked over your shoulder to see Dean and Cas on their way back into the library.

Sam didn't respond, but the unsettled look on his face stayed for the rest of the night.

I've figured out why, even though Eloise and Colin are the two characters who are most consistent in showing Penelope love and affection, Penelope fans are so quick to crucify them.

It's because they are the only characters showing Penelope regular love and affection. They're her emotional crutches.

So when their interests and wishes clash with their "obligation" to assist or please Penelope, going to places Penelope doesn't want them to go, growing close to people who take them away from Penelope, having interests in subjects Penelope doesn't want to talk about, not "listening" (obeying) Penelope when she tries to tell them how to live their lives, they are failing in their duty to Penelope.

Because Penelope hasn't got anyone else really looking out for her, anything Eloise and Colin that isn't for Penelope's benefit is seen as a "dereliction of duty".

In the eyes of Pen fans; and I do think to an extent, in the eyes of Pen themselves, because Penelope is so dependant on them for emotional support and friendship, Penelope should be, and must be, their only priority. They provide a service for Penelope that nobody else does, and because of that, their existence should revolve around providing that service.

It's also why Eloise is a far better character than Colin. Eloise, thankfully, got a decent bit of her own development separately from Penelope. Her and Benedict, her and Daphne, her and Violet etc. that explores her fears and anxieties and builds up her personality a bit more than being Penelope's hanger on.

Unfortunately Colin comes across as being utter boring and without a personality because we see him ONLY through Penelope's POV and it has resulted in him being treated as a Penelope accessory. Every Colin/Penelope interaction is about Penelope - look at poor Pen pining over Colin while he is not interested in her. It's just about evincing sympathy for Penelope which leads to more and more hate for Colin.

They even turned the whole Marina debacle to be about Penelope - even if she will not face the consequences of her actions. Colin was just a side character in that whole affair, unlike Eloise and Theo being about Eloise awakening to the possibilities and a world outside her little bubble.

[Note: I just realized that Penelope was responsible for destroying both Eloise and Colin's first relationships and first loves (With Theo and Marina...) ]

Which is why there is so much of 'Colin should grovel' and 'Colin should apologize'. The post about how Penelope was standing alone with no one asking her to dance was because Colin's off hand remark to his friends destroyed her chances of marriage. Meanwhile they don't have anything to say about how Eloise being branded as a anti monarchist rebel affects her marriage chances because Penelope is responsible for that.

I agree that this could be an interesting exploration of Pen here as a character but I don't think the show is interested in that - they want us to sympathize with Pen when I am just not able to do that, no matter how much I try. Which is going to affect my enjoyment of season 3.

It's partly the writing, partly the acting. The quick cut from Kate/Anthony dancing to Penelope looking almost angry makes it seem like she's bitter that the Indian woman she called 'spinster of a beast' is happy and thriving while she's stuck in the corner dressed up and nowhere to go. I don't get all the 'Poor Penelope' comments - when she has been dragging down other women for 16 episodes!

April 16, 1816 – And of course, one cannot forget to mention Lady Y/N Montclair, who looked like a vision in her emerald dress at the Danbury Ball last night. Her presence seemed to cast a spell over the gentlemen in attendance, and they were practically lining up to engage her in conversation. It was a sight to behold, watching them swoon over her. However, one can hardly blame them, given how effortlessly graceful she was. It appears Lady Montclair will have more than enough gentlemen to choose from this season…
