Title: In the Bones

Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Rating: T

Word count: 1,007

Summary: Dimitri visits his father's tomb and loses his footing in the process.

Also available on ao3.

The grave of his father was not a simple one, and Dimitri was the first to say that the veined marble used to carve his likeness was too exquisite and unnecessary. The tomb itself was cold yet elaborate in a way only the royal family was allowed. Tradition called for excess in the mausoleum that honored Fódlan’s monarchs. It was a tradition Dimitri hoped he did not have to honor. He had learned that simplicity was far better than any bombastic gesture. A person would remember deeds, not statues.

His hand rested on the marble wrist of this version of his father. He dragged it down to the carving of Areadbhar, the same magical lance he now gripped in his hand. The weapon meant for kings.

He wondered if he was worthy of it.

The sharp chill of stone lingered on his fingertips as he lifted his hand away. The echo of his footfalls resounded around him, rang like bells among the flying buttresses of a cathedral’s nave as they called for a congregation.

When Dimitri encountered the sunlight outside, it was with squinting eyes and a summer breeze.

He walked across the castle grounds, away from the tomb that had been secreted away from the public eye. He watched the knights train in the yard, a squire tug on his horse’s bridle, and commoners walk freely into the outer halls for food and shelter.

“Your High—I mean Your Majesty!” someone greeted as he passed. He smiled awkwardly at the nameless figure, not yet used to the new honorific.

It's the way Flint looks at Silver and Madi kissing with a happy look on his face that slowly morphs into the expression of the saddest man in the world for me

The "you heard him" from both of them because there's "no daylight between them" I'm sobbing

It's the way Flint says, "I need you to know I did everything I could to keep her safe."

And the way Silver says, "It wasn't your fault. It wasn't your fault." So softly and so brokenly.

It's the way Silver says this knowing Flint would blame himself. It's the way Flint has blamed himself for everything already. And it took the words of a man who has just lost his lover to tell him otherwise.

"You're an educated man my lord, but I think it worth reminding you that in most cases a man trying to change the world fails for one simple and unavoidable reason--everyone else."

The writing in this show is *chef's kiss*

"Every man has his torments. Demons born from past wrongs that hound and harass him.

You perceive the effects of Captain Flint's demons. Echoes of their voices. But I know their names. I was there when they were born."

Screaming at every line dropped like this

"Where else will you wake up in the morning and matter?"

"What if they start shooting at us?"

"Duck."

"Truth is...every day I've worn that name, I've hated him a little more. I've been ready to return him to the sea for a long time."

"Everyone is a monster to someone. Since you are so convinced that I am yours. I will be it."

"What does a colonial power do when the men whose toil powers it lay down their shovels, take up swords, and say, 'No more?'"

"For that is the single most dangerous weapon they possess, the one they tempt."

"I noticed that you've locked it. Do you mind me asking who has the key?"

"Neptune."

OK OK O K MY POSEIDON AS NEPTUNE ERA IS COMING

"Now my father used to tell me that when the world promises undesirable outcomes, only a fool believes he can alter the latter without first addressing the state of the former."

"Madness is such a hard thing to define, which makes it such an easy label to affix to one's enemies."

"And then I wonder if maybe we don't have to work that hard to imagine what he'd say. Maybe we've already heard it, and the only choice is whether we choose to listen."

"I have found that contemplating these things is the most difficult part. That when the dread moment arrives, your true nature will assert itself. The confusion will lift and all will appear as it should be."

"Too much sanity may be madness, and the madness of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be."

Ok Don Quixote

"You must see by now that when you wage war on the world, the world fights back."

"You did do all those things."

"I know I did. But always with a man behind me doing his damnedest to bend it all to his benefit."

"Civilization has a number of faces. To think them all powerless to alter Naussau's future is a terrible mistake."

"You chose. Live with it."

I'm watching "Black Sails" for the first time and I'm blown away by the writing and attention to detail, but my favorite thing.

My. Favorite. Thing.

Is how Billy has a foot and a hundred pounds on Flint, and yet there's absolutely no doubt that Flint would absolutely wreck him in a fight.

Like, somehow, Toby Stephens manages to portray that much power, without being physically imposing. (Compared to Tom Hopper, at any rate. No shade) He is the only person besides my old fight teacher who has that kind of charisma.
