What do you use deadnettle for?

Avatar

Mostly I use it for magic pertaining to happiness, growth, beauty, or opportunity. I also associate deadnettle with the ability to make proper use of available resources, so I sometimes add it to a spell if a little bit of flexibility, fortitude, or Making The Best Of Things is called for.

Purple deadnettle is an early spring flower, very popular with the bees, and it grows abundantly pretty much anywhere it can find loose damp soil. It turns my yard into an oasis of tiny bell-shaped wildflowers and happily bumbling bees long before the early summer clover begins to bloom. This sweet little flower was one of the first gifts my new home gave me and it helped kickstart the bond I'm developing with the land.

(Apparently, it's also edible, although I've never tried it.)

Pictured: A patch of purple deadnettle in my yard, with vetchweed and dandelion puffballs mixed in.

Would it be OK to make a luck or protection spell for the football team I root or is that kind of wrong ?

One of the oldest and most classical things you can do with magic. Honor your ancestors of spirit who were horny for the gladiators of ancient Rome and bless your local varsity golf team to your heart's content.

Dream Dust

For dreams and visions; for restful sleep with pleasant dreams.

Ingredients:

• 2 pt Marjoram • 1 pt Hibiscus Flower • 1 pt Jasmine Flower • 1 pt Valerian** • 1⁄2 pt Poppy Flower* ** • 1⁄2 pt Vervain

Materials:

  • Mortar & Pestle or Spice Grinder
  • Funnel
  • Mesh Strainer
  • Collection Dish
  • Container

Grind each ingredient separately for several minutes to produce fine powder. Sieve the material through the mesh strainer into the collection dish; this removes the larger ungrindable pieces and gives you cleaner powdered herb. (Pro-Tip: Putting a funnel under the strainer helps reduce lost material.)

If desired, use an electric spice grinder to reduce the herbs to usable powder. Combine the component powders in the collection dish, mix well, and bottle immediately. Label and date for future reference.

Use in magics intended to bring pleasant dreams, banish nightmares, and ensure a restful night’s sleep. This powder can also be used in any magic related to sleep or dreaming, including (but not limited to) dream-sending, dream manipulation, and protection from nightmares while sleeping.

To make a dream doll for sympathetic magic, mix a few pinches of powder with soft clay or melted candle wax and form the substance into a small human figure. Name the figurine for the person it is meant to protect, wrap it in cotton cloth, and tuck it under the mattress.

To increase the probability of prophetic dreams or visions, a small amount of Dream Dust may be combined with powdered incense and burnt before retiring to bed. Do not directly inhale large amounts of the smoke, and do not use this method if you are pregnant or nursing.

*= Use with caution. **= Do not use if pregnant or nursing.

Check my potions and powders tag for more recipes! You can also find this recipe and dozens of others in my book, Pestlework, now available on Amazon and in the Willow Wings Witch Shop. 😊

Months and Magical Associations

In an attempt to kick off a discussion, here's something that's been rattling around in my head this week:

Does anyone else have particular associations for the calendar months? Not just for the full moons that fall within them for for the month itself.

For me, it's a sliding scale between This Month Is Optimal For This Thing and I'm Feeling A Vibe. I don't think it's based on anything other than my own preferences, the change of seasons, and certain holidays, although I do know there are some astrological connotations to the idea.

For example, in my mind, February is associated with light and candle magic. I figure this is mostly because of my personal connection to Brighid and the holiday of Candlemas, and also because of Groundhog's Day. (I grew up in Pennsylvania, so Punxsutawney Phil predicting the weather every year was a big deal for us.)

Some months are nebulous, while others are more definite. April is sort of vaguely about flower magic, while November is very definitely about creativity and inspiration.

So...anyone else have associations they'd like to share? There's no right or wrong answers, just curiosity.

Mine are more of a Spectrum of the Year that's loosely based on how I feel between the "spokes" on the Wheel of the Year! It's less of a "correspondences" thing and more of a "what they indicate" thing for me.

- December is actually when I celebrate the "new year"! Yule and all. Unfortunately I also associate it with being tired from holiday parties, but it's when the Natural World Gets Serious about quieting/dying down. The winter relaxation, the warmth of hot cocoa, the first Serious Snows that Stick.

- January is the Very Cold month. Like sometimes below zero cold. It's bracing and refreshing and Winter Wonderland for me. (I enjoy the sensation of Being Cold in small bursts!) This tends to be Surprise Snow Day month! And when we get most of our blizzards.

- February is, in recent years, Mix of Sun and Snow month. Slush, fluctuating levels of Cold, good time for spells to Bring Things Into Being rather than banish or negate, and Being Aggressively AroAce.

- March is Early Spring and Second Winter month. I associate it with the first steps towards coming back to life. Rain admist birdsong, calm amidst the chaos of everything coming back to life at once.

- April tends to mark when my own personal power starts feeling more subtle/hard to draw up again. Flowers and birds and reawakening. Things Start to Get Loud. I start to Rest more.

- May is about when the natural world starts getting overwhelmingly "loud" for me. It's when my personal energies take a sharp nosedive. May is about stepping up my shields and putting my "game face" on for the weather, sunlight, and people both getting obnoxious soon.

- June in recent years I start associating with Overly Warm Weather. This used to be relegated to the "dog days" of August but our Dog Days are no longer only in August. /u_u\ My inverted seasonal depression starts kicking in.

- July is associated with those stereotypical Warm and Humid Summer Nights. Camping trips, fireflies, playing outside at night, and fireworks. So Many Fireworks.

- August is the month my personal energy is just permanently in exhaustion and overwhelm. I don't do well in the heat and August temps soar above 90 here. (I have passed out from the heat at 75. Vasovagal syncope, not dehydration. My physical body Can Not Handle It and I think my nonphysical energy responds to that.) August is for lazing about and entertaining myself and distracting myself from the oppressive heat. Probably don't have the energy for much aside from personal shields and maintaining the physical body.

- September is when temps can start randomly getting Very Cold and Very Hot. The natural world is in flux; birds start leaving, trees start changing (especially the maples and those trees with the tiny leaves downtown). My personal energy starts rising again. Pre-Halloween Season! Apples and fall festivals! Relief from the heat!

- October: Best Month! Best Sabbat! Best mundane holiday! My personal power at its PEAK! Exploration and delight and good time for working more powerful/draining spells.

- November: Coming down off the Samhain high and settling into quiet again. The world is the darkest, the quietest. My power still going pretty strong. Good time for reflections and settling affairs.

(I wonder if living somewhere so temperate and inconsistent affects how my energy waxes and wanes throughout the year?)

also since we're on the topic

no, creating wards and protections doesn't "magically" put you at greater risk than not protecting yourself at all

"it's the law of attraction, protecting yourself draws harm to you because you're validating that bad things can happen"

just like doing money magic will actively put you into debt because you're acknowledging your need to pay the bills?

"every action has an equal and opposite reaction, protection draws bad fortune"

just like cleansing attracts harmful energies into your home???

listen I am in no position to debate personal belief but I struggle to understand the point of getting into sorcery if the north star of your system is "the only winning move is not to play"

Avatar

Ewww that’s such a bad take I can’t even handle it.

But, may I suggest that you can also hide your wards to make them less easily found which could be applied both so they are harder to “break” by another magical practitioner but also in case you got overly worried that they would be a billboard of “magic here”.

this just in: instead of your cake having a glitter fondant topping with pipped letters that say MAGIC IS HERE, it can be a tasteful buttercream affair that sits, unpretentiously, in the back of the shelf

Oh, one of my FAVORITE wardings, apart from the ones with structures based on naturally-occuring things like spiderwebs and brambles, is a little hand-wave I call Nothing To See Here.

It's less about making something less of a target for magical interference and more about not drawing unwanted attention from people who might have perfectly mundane bad intentions. Which, in my opinion, is a much more realistic concern.

This is probably a boring question (sorry) but what is your favorite little simple spell? Also I love all of your posts they are very informative and (some) funny. :)

Thank you, anon! I try to be informative and/or very hilarious.

My favorite "simple spell" is actually "Light A Fire Under Their Butt". I have not previously shared this one online, so you are the catalyst for the spreading of knowledge today.

Image description begin: A graphic of old-looking paper with funny text on it. There are two graphics of candles followed by all the text shared below. End image description.

Light A Fire Under Their Butt

Tools needed:

  • red tea light
  • index cards
  • scissors
  • writing utensil
  • lighter

Cut out human-shaped taglocks from the index cards.

Write the names and positions if applicable on chest and head of the taglocks.

Fold the taglocks so they're sitting down.

Light the candle and carefully pass the taglocks over the flames. Don't set them on fire or get them burnt.

Yell, whisper-yell, or loudly think: "Get a fucking move on!"

Pass the taglocks over the flame again.

Post-Script Notes

Naturally, you can use things actually connected to the person (such as hair, fingernails, or whatever you need) to connect the little papers to them more, but I cast this spell on some people that I don't work close to and didn't have access to. Luckily they are public figures so I could just scribble their information all over the papers.

Practice basic fire safety, I beg of you as a firefighter.

This works great when the only problem is that people are going too slow and need to make some fucking decisions so you can keep doing your thing.

Yes, you can use LED candles instead. The point here is the fire imagery, not the actual flame.

May I recommend, particularly if they are someone who hesitates due to anxiety or impostor syndrome or perfectionism, performing this spell while playing Get Up by Shinedown?

Get up, get up, get a move on! Get up, get up. What's taking so long? Get up, get up, get a move on Stop stalling, I'm calling out Get up, get up, get a move on Get up, get up, ain't nothing wrong 'Cuz I believe you can be whatever And I agree, you can do much better Trust me

Pokemagic

I’m an avid fan of pokemon and when i was younger i used to collect all the different cards. its occured to me before but its just dawned on me today that you can use the different pokemon type charge cards as symbols for the elements.

So you can use those as elemental representations if your parents don’t really know you’re practicing.

What are some other creative ways you guys have represented the elements?

Heal Thy Heart Powder

Intent: To relieve heartache, heartbreak, loneliness, grief, and other emotional pains.

Ingredients:

  • Red Roses
  • Cloves
  • Cinnamon
  • Witch Hazel
  • Orange Peel
  • Cherry Bark (or blossoms)
  • Coriander

Materials:

  • Mortar & Pestle (or spice grinder)
  • Funnel
  • Mesh Strainer
  • Collection Dish
  • Container

Note: Powdered versions of most herbs are available online. I recommend such sites as Starwest Botanicals and Penn Herbs for the quality products at reasonable prices. Also, if you can get your hands on a good spice grinder, you can make your own powder from dried herb products.

Grind each ingredient separately to produce fine powder. Sieve the material through the mesh strainer into the collection dish; this removes the larger unground pieces and gives you cleaner powdered herb. (Pro- Tip: Putting a funnel under the mesh strainer reduces lost material and makes collection much easier.)

Combine the component powders in the collection dish, mix well, and bottle immediately. For volume, go heavier on the less expensive or more easily available materials like Red Roses, Cloves, and Cinnamon. Otherwise, combine in more or less even amounts.

Use in any spellwork designed to ease pains of the heart, be they from loss, fatigue, relationships, loneliness, or general sadness. Add to charms to help one recover from emotional pain.

For more recipes to fill out your potion kit, you can check out Pestlework: A Book of Magical Powders & Oils. (Available on Amazon and in my shop!)

If you’re enjoying my content, please feel free to drop a little something in the tip jar or check out my published works on Amazon or in the Willow Wings Witch Shop. 😊

Hi friends - I really hate to make this post, but I'm struggling a little bit this month due to some unforseen emergency bills. I want to take a moment to plug my Etsy store, TheDruidsForest (click the name for a link).

Include your tumblr username and chosen intention in your order, and I'll add in an extra gift of a small custom spell bottle for free 💚 I used to do this a lot, but I haven't in a while. My Etsy was such a huge hobby of mine and kept me busy, but after 2020 and their new SEO/fees/dropshippers/etc, it really died and I'm lucky to see 1 order per month. I'd really appreciate a follow, a favorite, or even just a glance. Love and light to you all!

Attention Business Witches!

I'm currently putting together the 2024 schedule for my monthly show, Hex Positive (a proud member of the Nerd and Tie Podcast Network), and I'm looking for witchy businesses to promote during the midroll ad segments.

If you have a witchcraft-related business, shop (online or brick-and-mortar), publication, or event that you would like to promote to a wider audience, I offer 1-2min custom ads with narration and music. Creation of ad copy is also available if you do not have something pre-written, or I can run an existing ad if you have one. Rates will vary accordingly.

If you're interested, please send an ask or contact me by email at BreeNicGarran@gmail.com.
