I want to see a RomCom about a protagonist with ADHD, and their dramatic act of love at the climax of the film is managing to give the love interest their full, truly undivided attention for ten minutes.

Avatar
cannotwynn

This is perfect. You get THE KISS, then a minute or so of said undivided attention, then the credits start rolling but the scene continues all the way through the credits, right before the final blue ratings scroll at the literal end of the film.

Hi Mark, Happy Trans Day of Visibility! Could you distribute high fives to all the people responsible for bringing us Alesha, Yuma, Niko, and all the other trans and/or nonbinary characters in Magic. It's so often we get overlooked by pop culture properties, and it's nice to feel included in your worlds. Here's looking forward to future trans characters in Magic!

Will do!

idea: a warlock researcher. That's not a researcher of warlocks, but a researcher who is a warlock. At least, that's what they appear to be: They've got a patron and all, and they are able to research things incredibly effectively because their patron is able to find out all kinds of information for them.

But it turns out they're really a chronomancer: Their patron is themselves, in the future (or past, depending on how you look at it).

Their patron doesn't have incredible knowledge: their patron doesn't know anything they didn't spend the time to find out themselves.

But once they finish learning the thing, they send it back in time to their previous self, making it look like they got the answer immediately.

So, like, if you go to them and pay them a dozen gold to develop a reusable genderswap potion recipe, they'll call up their patron and their patron will hand them a scroll with the ingredients on it. Bam, done!

Except what actually happened is that they spent weeks or months studying the problem, scouring libraries, consulting other wizards, getting into swordfights with the God of Gender, and endless experimentation on their poor apprentices. Just when they were done, they sent the results back in time, undoing that branch of the timeline, resulting in the recipe appearing out of nowhere, a grandfather-paradox item with no creation event.

Really, 12 gold is a bargain for how much work they didn't have to do for you.

But then they'd be depriving themselves of the research process, forever dooming themselves to never improve their methods

Nah they just spend a while researching how to get better at researching, developing new methods, and then write that down and send it back to their past self. Problem solved.

The LGBTQ community has seen controversy regarding acceptance of different groups (bisexual and transgender individuals have sometimes been marginalized by the larger community), but the term LGBT has been a positive symbol of inclusion and reflects the embrace of different identities and that we’re stronger together and need each other. While there are differences, we all face many of the same challenges from broader society.

In the 1960′s, in wider society the meaning of the word gay transitioned from ‘happy’ or ‘carefree’ to predominantly mean ‘homosexual’ as they adopted the word as was used by homosexual men, except that society also used it as an umbrella term that meant anyone who wasn’t cisgender or heterosexual. The wider queer community embraced the word ‘gay’ as a mark of pride.

The modern fight for queer rights is considered to have begun with The Stonewall Riots in 1969 and was called the Gay Liberation Movement and the Gay Rights Movement.

The acronym GLB surfaced around this time to also include Lesbian and Bisexual people who felt “gay” wasn’t inclusive of their identities.

Early in the gay rights movement, gay men were largely the ones running the show and there was a focus on men’s issues. Lesbians were unhappy that gay men dominated the leadership and ignored their needs and the feminist fight. As a result, lesbians tended to focus their attention on the Women’s Rights Movement which was happening at the same time. This dominance by gay men was seen as yet one more example of patriarchy and sexism.

In the 1970′s, sexism and homophobia existed in more virulent forms and those biases against lesbians also made it hard for them to find their voices within women’s liberation movements. Betty Friedan, the founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW), commented that lesbians were a “lavender menace” that threatened the political efficacy of the organization and of feminism and many women felt including lesbians was a detriment.

In the 80s and 90s, a huge portion of gay men were suffering from AIDS while the lesbian community was largely unaffected. Lesbians helped gay men with medical care and were a massive part of the activism surrounding the gay community and AIDS. This willingness to support gay men in their time of need sparked a closer, more supportive relationship between both groups, and the gay community became more receptive to feminist ideals and goals.

Approaching the 1990′s it was clear that GLB referred to sexual identity and wasn’t inclusive of gender identity and T should be added, especially since trans activist have long been at the forefront of the community’s fight for rights and acceptance, from Stonewall onward. Some argued that T should not be added, but many gay, lesbian and bisexual people pointed out that they also transgress established gender norms and therefore the GLB acronym should include gender identities and they pushed to include T in the acronym.

GLBT became LGBT as a way to honor the tremendous work the lesbian community did during the AIDS crisis.

Towards the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s, movements took place to add additional letters to the acronym to recognize Intersex, Asexual, Aromantic, Agender, and others. As the acronym grew to LGBTIQ, LGBTQIA, LGBTQIAA, many complained this was becoming unwieldy and started using a ‘+’ to show LGBT aren’t the only identities in the community and this became more common, whether as LGBT+ or LGBTQ+.

In the 2010′s, the process of reclaiming the word “queer” that began in the 1980′s was largely accomplished. In the 2020′s the LGBTQ+ acronym is used less often as Queer is becoming the more common term to represent the community.

Through various forms of chicanery, I control two Pramikon, the Sky Rampart. One is set to left, one is set to right. Is combat locked out, or does the Pramikon pair cancel itself out? I’ve heard conflicting answers between both 1v1 and 3+ player scenarios. I’ve argued one side, been convinced I was wrong, then recently had someone again challenge what I thought was correct!

Avatar

Pramikon creates an attacking restriction and such restrictions cannot be violated.

Therefore, a player will only be able to attack if the same opponent is the nearest opponent on both the left and the right.

They won’t be able to attack at all unless that opponent is the same, which only happens when there are only two players remaining in the game.

When left equals right, it's OK to fight.

With regards to Volrath’s Curse and other similar old cards, when exactly can I sacrifice a permanent to ignore the effect? Can this be used as just a free repeatable sacrifice engine?

Avatar

Paying to ignore these effects is a type of special action. This means that you have to have priority to make the payment, but doing so doesn't use the stack.

Since these effects are ongoing, the ability to pay them doesn't go away and so you can use Volrath's Curse as a free sacrifice outlet if you really want to.

If I were to play a Mishra’s Factory to trigger Amareth the Lustrous, and hold priority to animate the Factory in response to the trigger, will Amareth still only look for a land or will it now see the Factory’s artifact and creature types? That is, when does Amareth “lock-in” what card types it can hit?

Avatar

Amareth's ability will look at the card types of the permanent that triggered it when her ability resolves. (If the permanent has already left the battlefield, then she'll look at the types it had when it last existed on the battlefield.)

This means that Amareth will see Mishra's Factory as an Artifact Creature Land and let you take any of those types into your hand when you look at the top card of your library.

How do you all keep managing to reinvent or recontextualize cards in a way that makes them feel like default effects while still offering something unique? As an example to better explain myself, I find it fascinating how cards like Immolation and Flowstone Infusion are basically "Shock" in Limited but just different enough to still be interesting. Cards like these are some of my favorite ones to look for every set...they manage to feel familiar and offer a shortcut to understanding them on a base level, but also still give me that giddiness of "new" and exciting cards to try.

That’s an important part of Magic design: do what we always do, but just a little bit differently.

Mark, you and your team gave given me the perfect Un-combo: I cast Form of the Approach of the Second Sun. I then cast Fractured Identity on it, so my opponent creates a copy of it. Then I cast Nerf War.

I cannot wait to play with Unfinity!

I have a swan tattoo on my leg. I want to figure out how to turn it into a dragon. I feel like this should be doable.

Anyone have any suggestions for me? I’m not great at visualizing things like this.

Update: I made a trace of the tattoo…

Then I had a breakthrough when I realized that the top of the swan’s head could be the bottom of the dragon’s jaw, and I started sketching…

This is as far as I’ve gotten for now:

I’ll keep you updated on my progress!

Made another trace and expanded on my last sketch.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Words of encouragement? Let me know!

So one thing I didn't love about my last sketch was the two areas of enclosed negative space where the eye and inside of the horn were.

I felt like it didn't fit with the original design, which uses negative space, but never in an enclosed shape.

So I tried to address that in my newest sketch.

I also tried to get the wings to more closely fit the curve of the original wing shape (at least where it's closest to the body.)

Any thoughts?

That's it!

Update: My amazing artist stepbrother @giant-bean agreed to help me clean up and refine the design. He sent me a few versions today.

Here’s my current favorite:

As you can see, in this last one he matched it up with an image of my leg to see how it would end up looking in real life. And that’s what gave him the idea of the wraparound tail.

Gonna be honest, I freaking love it!!

Actual Conversation - Food for Thought

This exchange happened at a truck stop during a recent car trip with @zoyogrl on our way back up to Washington.

Her: “Ugh. I need something with protein, but there’s like, no good options without gluten.”

Me: “What about a jar of peanut butter and a spoon?”

Her: “Oh! Good idea babe! And I can dip other things in it too.”

Me: “You know…”

Her: “Your face is making me worried.”

Me: “So you know how peanuts are neither a pea, nor a nut? They’re a legume? Like a bean.”

Her: “Okaaaaay…”

Me: “So technically, peanut butter is a bean dip!”

Her: “NO.”

Me: “YES!”

Her: “No! Why do you do this to me?! I can’t unthink that!”

Me: “Come on, it’s not so bad.”

Her: “…”

Me: “Want me to get you a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup?”

Her: “Ooo! Yes please!”

Me: “Yeah, I love chocolate covered bean dip too.”

Her: “WHYYYYYY?!!”

Chocolate comes from beans, too, so it’s bean dip coated in bean dip

Instead of saying, “Have a good day!” I want to get in the habit of saying, “I hope the day is kind to you!”

Because if someone is already having a hard day, adding a command to have a good day can end up feeling like another failure. And for those with anxiety or depression, this can feel especially discouraging.

On the other hand, telling someone you hope the day is kind to them expresses your desire for their happiness, while also acknowledging how much of that happiness is impacted by their environment and other factors outside of their control.

Avatar

I should probably adopt this. I’m now a court clerk, and it has always felt awkward to offer “hope you have a good day” after giving someone a sheet of paper that outlines $540 in fines and court costs.
