somehow knowing that tumblr is being kept around mostly as a testing ground for advertisers and corporations doesn’t even make me feel that exploited, because every social media site is exploitive. but being basically lab rats to test shit on before it’s refined for use in polite society is by far the funniest possible way to be exploited.

#yeah maybe i’m a marketing lab rat but at least my dash is in fucking chronological order

this ad appeared right after i read this post.

so yeah, they’re testing something, but in true lab rat fashion we have no fucking clue what

There are actually some stuff that can get lost in translation in Scarlet Nexus which are not necessary to know but could add more into your appreciation of the game.

The catchphrase for the game is 「結び重ねる、超脳力と絆」 which when translated is more or less “interweaving brain powers and bonds” but there are a couple of wordplays here:

  • Let’s start with the more obvious pun here, which is 超脳力. It is read in the same way as 超能力 which means “extrasensory/psychic abilities”, but the 能 (talent) part is replaced with 脳 (brain).
  • The second one has something to do with the first phrase of the catchphrase 「結び重ねる」 which means “interweaving”, with all the red strings motif going on in Scarlet Nexus (the game title is actually just a fancy way of saying that) too. In the game world/lore, character names are written in katakana instead of kanji and don’t really follow Japanese name conventions (i.e. Yuito Sumeragi instead of Sumeragi Yuito, last names that are not Japanese for some characters), but they, along with other things in the game, are obviously based on Japanese. Let me explain in the subsequent points.
  • One of the ways to write Yuito’s name is 結糸, though this is rather uncommon for boys (it looks kind of feminine as a name), so we can also go with 結人 which is the more common one. Either way, the first kanji in these names 結 makes up the 結び in 「結び重ねる」. Also, 結糸 as a name means roughly “connected threads”.
  • Phonetically, Kasane obviously refers to 重ねる which is read as “kasaneru” and means “overlapping” by itself.

There are more stuff like this (for example, how the SAS symbols are kanji related to the abilities themselves but stylized, e.g. the SAS symbol for psychokinesis is 念 which relates to the mind, etc.), but I will make separate posts for those if people are interested.

The funny thing is people who have known me for ages know already that I did (and still do) keep asking for Enojun in Tales and I guess whatever higher being up there responsible for this only partially listened to me and gave me Enojun in SNX, which is by Tales devs.

I really went in without any expectations, this is honest, because I really didn’t know what to expect either, but now I’m highly invested. I just wish it wasn’t so... obscure? Overlooked? I’m not sure lol but in some ways it’s better I guess because it’s more peaceful for me to enjoy this way.

Also thank you SNX for giving me a new non-romantic ship I’m already super invested in after ojioi but nobody else really cares or they do but they keep debating over the nature of the relationship instead of the substance itself

It was so awful. I wanted to die. But Im glad, I was alive today. I’m so glad... I was here to perform one final act of humanity. They made me this but they couldnt take away ...my soul. Thank you Kasane, live a long life .... for both of us.

What I appreciate about Scarlet Nexus is how thoroughly they avoid most anime tropes that could be called - and I hate using that word but it's the most fitting - problematic

It's an animesque game but it doesn't rely on exaggerated gender roles, stereotypical gendered behavior, girls fighting over a boy, boys being perverts and getting away with it for some reason or girls inflicting bodily harm on boys over a misunderstanding.

Then you have the strongest and "manliest" member of the cast learning to enjoy cooking and admitting to the therapeutic effect of going to a cat cafe, you have the designated "dirty old man" very clearly stating that his behavior would be super creepy if serious and doting on the girls cuz he just wants to feel like a father hanging with his daughter, you have girls liking the same boy (real or imagined) not starting an unnecessary rivalry over it...the list goes on

Also a small detail I like is that abilities have negative effects on life as well, which we actually get to hear about and even witness in both serious and lighthearted ways. Like Shiden discovering the heads cuz he got angry or how he shorts out the controller while gaming, Arashi mentioning how running into a wall ended up completely dismembering her, Tsugumi being ostracized as a child but also using her powers to better pursue her gardening hobby, or the whole Kunad Gate situation

Idk where I'm going with this but I really like the writing in this game, especially concerning the characters

me, buying Scarlet Nexus: oh hey this game about anime teens using their psychic powers to fight evil monsters looks cool!
Scarlet Nexus: Governments can and will abuse the technology of the information age to subjugate and spy upon their people. The state co-opts the idealism of the young to reinforce its systems without any regard for those it uses. The people hurt most in revolution are rarely those that truly deserve retribution. When you allow technology to alter your perception of reality, you open the door to give others ultimate power over you. Also how rad would it be if you could beat up monsters with your brain?

Scarlet Nexus be really giving me what I EXACTLY want with Yuito and Kasane’s connection and I really can’t say this (+ it’d be hard to explain it without details too) without spoiling but they. really did it. my absolute favorite kind of interactions between two protagonists ever, and I love that they’re both co-equal protagonists. game is really fun and satisfying to play too (play on Hard difficulty btw, gives so much serotonin)

Life update: COVID in June, post-COVID symptoms even now, new job (game programmer + localization engineer at a certain company, making sure stuff like this gets fixed, I actually encountered a similar bug at work lol), and sinking almost 100 hours into Scarlet Nexus, which is the surprise hit of 2021 for me because before I treated this as something to tide me over until Arise but now I’m not sure I can take my mind off it for Arise lol.
