I know things have already been awful for Palestinians, but they'll only get worse after this.

Yeah, it feels like Bibi and the rest of the Israeli far right have been waiting for this opportunity to engage in full blow ethnic cleansing. Nationalists always feed each other

I think the reason conservatives hate environmentalism so much is that all the terminology is too friendly and lame sounding to take seriously. I purpose we change the following terms to get these people on our side.

Solar powered -> Plasma charged

Wind power -> Vortex energy

Electric vehicle -> Lightning machine

Renewable resource -> Infinity asset

Greenhouse gasses -> Death Clouds

Global warming -> Property devaluation

Environmentalists -> Wilderness cops

For example, saying you're a wilderness cop that drives a lightning machine powered by infinity assets to reduce death clouds and increase your property value sounds 100x more macho than the alternative.

Genuinely though, conservatives will overwhelmingly support something with a different name. I’ve seen it hundreds of times. They’re like babies this way.

Also, sometimes you have to pause and check in about what you each think the words mean.

I once asked a coworker what he thought about Unions. The definition of a "Union" that he had was "Communist System of Government Control, which Satan shall use to initiate his Hellish Reign on Earth."

By talking to him further, I was able to

1) establish that when I said "Union," I meant "This thing where all the employees in a certain business organize together, to negotiate for things like pay, raises, hours, and workplace safety as a GROUP, instead of on an individual, case by case basis."

2) Get him to the idea that "Unions," by that definition, aren't so bad, and might actually be helpful some times

3) Talk about how Satan probably has a variety of different systems and ideas for Hellish World Domination

4) Find out later that he'd spoken about the concept of "Unions" with other people, and was hearing good, non-Satanic things about it.

.

Yes, branding is important. But also, if you find yourself hurtling towards a Very Serious, Angry Argument... It doesn't hurt to double-check and see if the words they're saying mean what YOU THINK they mean.

Okay, serious question professional critics have been and will be debating for decades to come, but I'm sure you know better than them: Are games art? This is not question of quality-most art in all forms sucks-the argument how we define art and its purpose, function. Some argue games themselves aren't, but may contain art within them. That in a narrative driven game, the story may be art, but that's seperate from the game itself. Would a puzzle count as art? Would Solitaire? A slot machine?

Avatar

I keep trying to answer this question and then I keep putting it off cause I want to get it perfect and then it inevitably gets lost and I never respond so lets just go for it. Yes, Videos games are art, if we can identify any medium as art. The only arguments I can see that would deny video games as an art form would also dismiss Film as an art form. Now there are many differnet ways that a Video Game can be art, its a very multi facaded medium, but a few include

  • Story, the obvious one. Disco Elysium, Planescape Torment, the Baldur's Gate Series, Fallout New Vegas, the Witcher Series, Dragon Age, I have no Mouth and I must Scream, Legacy of Kaine, Undertale, God of War, are all good examples of this. (I like RPGS)
  • Mixing Mechanics and Story- Portal, Silent Hill 2, Bioshock, Deux Ex, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Walking Dead, all of these are examples of narrative and story being mered on a fundemental level. The Soulsbourn Games by fromsoft do a really good job of illustrating some very buddhist themes in there mechanics.
  • Pushing the medium forward. Resident Evil 4 is a fucking stupid game but its incredible genre invovations and the fact its fun as fuck pushed the entire medium forward. Same with Dead Space, Half Life (which is also you now..good), Monkey Island,
  • Mechanics as a way of viewing systems, or to have a vibe. Mechanics can be used to make you understand the world different from a system level, Paper's Please is a great example of this, a lot of Civlization Games or TTRPGS do this, Far Cry tries to do this. Resident Evil 2 Remake really does capture a sort of panic which is very impressive, Princeo of Persia, the original Thief Games, Sympathy of the Night
  • Video games as expression. This Dragon Cancer, No More Heroes, Braid, Even Postal, an uttelry vile game does express a certain Alt Right attitude (fuck garbage)
  • Video games as system design, just the brilliance of seeing a bunch of systems override together.
  • Mood Pieces. The Zelda games are masters of this, but also Shadow of the Collosius,
  • Purely mechanical Design. Doom is a great example of this, but Missile Command, even tetris has a lot of soviet aethetics in there

I think a puzzle counts as art, or has the potential to count as art, if it can change the way your mind thinks. A good puzzle doesn't just have you solve it, your brain twists around in order to change the way you view things. Like Braid requires you to like...unstuck your brain to understand the puzzles, its incredible

SO yes, games are art....but not all games are good art

Will missile command is purely mechanical design it is also an anguished cry against nuclear war and the horrors of mutually assured destruction.

True, and it does that almost entirely through mechanics. So even a game which came out before stories in game were possible is saying something thorugh it s mechanicals like.....nukes are bad. Its a very haunting game

Would it be fair to consider Turkey a settler colonial country built on the stolen Greek, Armenian and Kurdish land?

No, settler colonies tend to be a group who had no contact with an area and then suddenly show up and take over, the Turks have lived in the region since the middle ages, the genocides done under the Young Turks are much more like old school imperalism mix with ethnic nationalism, kind of like the Balkans write large.

Is there any reason I shouldn't consider illegal immigration victimless crime and in fact, morally wrong to oppose it (except in sense of legalising, you know what I mean)? I know some illegal immigrants are dangerous criminals, just like always some people anywhere are, and I think they should be prosecuted for THOSE crimes then, and I've seen no evidence going after illegals in general helps.

Avatar

If you strip away the nationalism and vague job insecurities, immigration, legal or illegal, is just people moving to a new location and that...doesn't hurt people. The reason why immigraiton is this big scary monster in the minds of people is that immigrants bring cultural change and challenge notions of normal. And people freak out when faced with cultural changes and societal shifting under there feet. I'm a very big proponate of more immigration, Europe and the US need to get over themselves. It is not a concidence that every fascist movement (including the OG nazis) starts with anti immigrant attitudes.

Does it feel to you at all like we're in a transitional period, in terms of people's politics? This sounds bizarre, these things are never static obvs, but like, during Trump, it felt like the lines were drawn in terms of opinions and who believed what-like now, it feels blurry, like we don't know what the opinions are. I know I'm not making any sense, it just, feels like before we had a war, with all the messiness, but a clear cut war, now it feels like it's a post-war period, where no one trusts anyone, you have ex-soldiers preying on whoever they can pick, we are rebuilding, but not really sure to what end.... Like, I know I'm not makign any sense, but I get this confuse, unfocused feel from everything. I dunno.

NO i think your unto something, there is a major political shift happening, though the details vary from nation to nation. In the US, it seems like the two halves of the United States founding are coming to a head. the US has always been founded on two contradictories desires, to be a liberal democracy, and to be a racist settler colony. And for the most part the US has just...not dealth with this, and it seems to be coming to a head now that we are having a massive generational transfer. I think in the next 8 years we are either going to see the death of the GOP as we know it and a major blow to American White Nationalism, or we are going to become a herrenvolk state. Europe is dealing with the major question of "do we retreat into nationalism or do we embrace an multi ethnic EU identity" Russia is in a state of collapse, China is throwing off the last vestiges of communism and replacing it with a terrifying form of Chinese Nationalism, India is rapidly descending into fascism, we are seeing the death of the old neoliberal order, hopefully we can replace it with a liberal or social democrat one

I reblogged it earlier but I'm glad the Something Awful Forums 9/11 thread was archived because it's an incredibly important slice of internet history. For the record I think 9/11 was thousands of personal tragedies for the direct victims of the attacks but one big national farce that led to America's ongoing slide into fascism, and the nationalism and remembrance around it is a joke especially in the wake of the same amount of deaths every fucking day in the US during the height of coronavirus.

Nevertheless I think it's important that if you do not remember because you were too young or just didn't exist on Sept 11, 2001 to read the Something Awful 9/11 forums to get an idea of what the internet was like at the moment when America changed to 24 hour news cycles and renewed hyper-nationalism not seen since WWII.

This all happened before Twitter, Facebook, before Discord. Before smart phones. Before most people had cell phones. When a lot of people still had dial-up internet, even. Some people in the thread were relying on radio because internet and TV weren't keeping up.

It was a live event of internet denizens reacting to the biggest national event (and among the biggest international events) of the past 25 years. It was also a slice of what the internet was like at the turn of the millennium. Not only that, but people accurately calling out who was responsible, and what would result before the attacks even finished.

Keep in mind that the links that follow contain images of the event, lots of Islamophobia, people calling for the Middle East to be nuked, people blaming Palestine, casual racist and homophobic language (this was Something Awful after all), etc etc. They preserved the first 17 pages which spanned about 24 hours during the events. It's the origin of the "WATCH BUSH START A FUCKING WAR" screenshot.

Links under the fold. I've also annotated the pages with notes regarding the timeline and any posts of interest. Note the thread was preserved in Pacific Time even though the page says times are Eastern. That's incorrect. Post timestamps are 3 hours behind Eastern Time, which is the time zone where the attacks occurred:

What was everyone's problem with Bden saying "if you think I'm a rapist, don't vote for me"? That's pretty sensible thing to say if you're accusse of that, showing he took it seriously?

Because Bidens uncomfortable and leftists in general don't want to be seen defending a powerful man who has been accused as rape, and the left really doesn't want to get into victim blamey narritives you see on the right all the time. Now as it turns out, this particular accusation was *probably* not real cause it wasn't sustained but its a precident that democrats want to get into

Do you think Carter was judged too harshly/unfairly as president or is most of the criticism legitimate.

I think like 70% of the criticism of Carter was totally unfair, his enviromental policy as extremely prophetic, and if you look at the history of Latin American imperalism Carter's administration is like...the least bad period prior to maybe Obama (maybe). A lot of problems during his administration were either not his fault (inflation) or weren't as bad as people said (standard of living). However there are a lot of legitimate cirticism of Carter that are kinda lost because so much of his administration. I think the issues with Carter break down on three lines

  1. Stuff that all presidents do and carter was either no exception or he didn't do much better. Like Carter was less racist than Reagan and has been very consistent on civil rights, but his administration wasn't like Obama levels good
  2. Stuff that was kinda problematic on its own. Carter was more neoliberal than we remember and he was pretty hostile to the idea of socialized healthcare
  3. Stuff that was just a competency issue. Carter had a lot of great ideas but was kind of a crummy administrator and they weren't able to come to anything. Maybe if he had gotten a second term.

Still Carter is one of the...least bad presidents and the world would be a better place if he had won

If the us were to divide on what lines do you think the borders would be drawn?

is it am ilitary divide or a political divide? Like is this a war and we break up or do we break up due to agreed differences? Cause with the latter I wouldimagine

  1. the east coast would split in two, north and South, probably in Vrignia or north carolina
  2. Texas and the Souther nCoast might go there own way
  3. Hawaii becomes independent
  4. The west coast unifies
  5. The center breaks into 3 or 4 states

Its hard to say without knowing what is causing the break up

I genuinely do wonder when the pandemic will be called for as over and all the proctols will be unnecessary. Because I'm doing my part. I'm wearing masks. I got vaccinated. But I'm so tired of this. I want to try and get my life on track like I was going to in 2020. This isn't about partying or travel, I want to reenter the work force and school so I can finally gain financial independence and leave my family behind.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm not trying to say that none of the safety protocols we have are working. They are and I'm glad but I'm also so tired. I have to believe this won't go on forever because I just can't deal with it anymore. Not the pandemic itself, not entirely, but the selfish idiots all proving who can die first and in more humiliating ways to covid. I just want to achieve I dunno herd immunity or something so this can finally end.

I'm sorry I hope I'm making sense. I don't want to sound like the idiots who diminish the severity of the pandemic I know this is serious but it's exhausting to see this keep going with no ending in sight.

Well this is ironitic reading this a year later, cause apparently a combination of a deeply stupid population who won't accept science, and a brutal neoliberal leadership who are terrified of how Covid has effected the economic structure of the US has combined to mean that as of now we have basically given up on stopping Covid, which is very frustrating becaues it is still very serious

The user minisoc was complaining about (txttletale is her URL) is a tankie herself — full on genocide denier and besties with brendanicus and everything — and unfortunately also very popular as a “funnyman”. Often taken as an expert because her parents are Venezuelan (tho she’s never lived there afaik and stand Maduro bc she & said parents don’t get along) and being from Latin America allegedly gives her extra-special knowledge on All Things Communism, including the USSR, and also the war in Ukraine. Yes it’s ridiculous, no it doesn’t make sense, but if you see folks like brendanicus & friends around complaining about people talking over “Latin American users” in a way that makes it sound like all Latin Americans are dictatorship stans… they mean her, specifically, because she’s their token Latin American.

I seem to have stumbled into drama, and tankie on tankie drama is always fascinating because you know that if this disagreement was happening in the Soviet Union it would have ended in bullets.

The stupidity of conflating Ukraine with Latin America aside (though to be clear, the US is russia in that metaphor), Latin American...isn't a homogenous group. But it also gets at one of the great ironies of tankies which is that...they aren't very popular stances. Like that is why they always have to insist that any prostation against Maduro's regime is a CIA backed coup or somethign, because the alternative is to acknowledge that a majority of the citizens are unhappy with the regime. Same reason why Trump can't acknowledge that he lost the 2020 election, they need the illusion that everybody secretly agrees with them and anybody who doesn't is either a shill or an out of touch liberal living in a bubble.
