Represention of Autistic Frustration in Laios Dungeon Meshi

Like many other autistic people, I related strongly to Laios Touden while reading Dungeon Meshi. This post isn't going to spend time disputing whether he displays autistic traits or not—while I could do that, I want to focus on why specifically his portrayal struck a chord with me in a way the writing of most other autistic-coded characters has not.

Disclaimer: as the above suggests, this post is strongly informed by my own experiences as an autistic person, as well as the experiences of my neurodivergent friends with whom I have spoken about this subject. I want to clarify that in no way am I asserting my personal experience to be some Universal Autistic Experience. This post is about why Laios' character feels distinct and significant to me in regard to autistic representation, and while I'm at it, I do feel that I have interesting things to say about autistic representation in media generally. This also got a bit long, so I'm sticking it under a read more. Spoilers for up to the end of chapter 88 below.

how do we feel about "I'm worried about you?"

said by a friend who normaly never worries about anything. said by a teammate who hates them. said by the last person on the planet they'd want to make worry.

"I'm worried about you."

and what do they say back? don't be? everything is going to be okay? i'm sorry?

Enemies to lovers trope have ruined some people heads cause why do people that sexual tension and charged tension is the only way to show you have chemistry?? Why can’t chemistry be the comfort someone feels when they are around another person? Why can’t chemistry be having an awkward conversation after kissing your best friend since childhood that you have been pinning for for so long? Why can’t chemistry be breaking into laughter while having a steamy scene? I’m tired of people comparing polin and kathony saying kathony has better chemistry like they’re are two different circumstances. They are different love stories

really love dynamics that are like 'it honestly doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic, the point is that they love each other. the type of love is inconsequential, all that matters is that it's there'. gotta be one of my favorite genders.

Hi! I was wondering if you could give me some advice... I keep seeing writing advice telling us to write something new and fresh and original and such to be able to get an agent and stuff, and it's getting in my head. I feel unmotivated to write the story I feel in my heart because I don't think it's super new or original and I'm worried I'll always "fail" at being a writer because of it

Gideon the Ninth is, at its heart, a locked house murder mystery. The only difference is that, rather than Poirrot or Marple, the main characters are a buff lesbian sword-girl jock and her Horrid Little Necromancer (pos), and that it's set in a decaying space-dynasty.

That's an extreme example. But, take another hugely popular book - Six of Crows. It's a bank heist crossbred with a prison escape. Again, what sells it is the characters (and, to some degree, the setting, though I would argue if it had been set in our world, the characters would've still shone enough to make it a best seller).

You've probably heard that there's nothing new under the sun. That's true. It's also true that almost everything that's created is, in its own way, unique.

You don't have to create something completely fresh in order to be successful in tradpub. You just have to (and sorry if this sounds cynical) write a story that will sell. I would argue that, in all honesty, writing something completely whacky off-the-wall avant garde and never-before-seen is a possible, but risky way to enter tradpub, because there's no precedent for a sales team to use in marketing. Just looking at, say, the romance genre - where every book has the same basic plot! - should show you that originality isn't always a selling point.

Find your strengths as a writer - worldbuilding? Characters? Dialogue? Intricate Rube Goldberg-machine plots? Then focus on making those strengths shine in your story (and, of course, on improving the rest of your writers' skillset). Uniqueness will follow.

it's immensely tragic and fucked up but also a little funny when someone is so incapable of accepting that they're worthy of love and affection without any kind of justification or ulterior motive that you have to wrap it up in some kind of practical reasoning like hiding a pill in ham and peanut butter to make your dog think they're getting a tasty treat. come closer, sharing body heat will help us both keep warm [waits until you're settled comfortably in my arms] and i like spending time with you and just being near you. lmao. get loved idiot.

Ugh, was having a great time mocking my recently imprisoned rival when I noticed the camera positioning makes it so that I appear behind the bars, thus framing me as trapped in a metaphorical prison of the narrative, now my whole day is ruined. Fuck.

I get it, man. The other day, I survived a shootout, only to realize that a stray bullet went through a mirror in such a way as to look from the camera's perspective like I got shot in the head through the mirror, so now I have to acknowledge that something that could be reasonably referred to as "me" really did die that day, and it's just like "jfc, gimme a BREAK"

ugh dont even get me started on how the other day i tried to sit on the throne of my conquered foe and light a cigar to celebrate my victory but the lighter wouldnt work and it had to be lighted by the vizier who used to work for my enemy but that i enlisted to work as a double agent and help me in my coup. that jerk afterwards said with a devilish smile "ill always be at your service my liege" and i just KNOW that he said that exact same thing to the previous ruler. signifying that my victory was phyrric since i am still caught in an endless cycle of violence and betrayal. that really spoiled the whole mood

Day 2 in the Middle School Time Loop: you remember that last time, everyone ignored you at recess because they were talking about a TV show that you hadn’t watched. This time, you lie and say you’ve seen it. They ask you who your favorite character is, and you don’t know any of the characters, and so you’re tongue-tied. They think you’re weirder than ever, or maybe a liar, which is worse (and true).

Day 3 in the Middle School Time Loop: you tell your parents that you feel ill. They let you stay home while they’re at work. You spend the whole day watching past episodes of the TV Show.

Day 4 in the Middle School Time Loop: Recess again. The same person asks you who your favorite character is. This time, you're ready. You eagerly tell them, and supplement your reasons for liking them with solid evidence from all 4 seasons of the show. But! Tough luck: you’re now too invested. The atmosphere turns uncomfortable. They go back to ignoring you like they did on the Day 1 that you didn’t know was Day 1.

Day 5 in the Middle School Time Loop:
