Loki's Diary Journal Entry 19

Dear Journal,

I have been officially released from my cell. Tony came the other day and told me I was free to leave, and he has a room in the compound made up for me, right across the hall from Promise.

Allow me to backtrack and tell you all of what happened since my last entry. Promise, when she's not in, I believe the word the Midgardians use is physiotherapy, or when she's not in meetings, she was with me. Her hands are so soft and delicate compared to mine - holding her hand makes it feel like I am holding the most delicate of roses.

She told me about how she felt when she was clinging to life - as she spoke of it, it was all dark. She could hear very muffled sounds, but that was all - until there was a light and warmth. She was sure it was death coming for her, but when we were discussing when that feeling happened, it correlated to when I was called upon to keep watch over her.

This confirms my theory about her condition improving when I was around; she knew I was near. We do not know if she has abilities yet, but that will come soon. Now that I have my own private space, I feel I may become emboldened to do something reckless - kiss her, but I worry that will ruin what we have, so perhaps not.

For now, I must go. Promise wishes to help me get acclimated to my room some more.

Shit shit shit shit shit You hurriedly crouched behind the row of lockers. Hunched and contorted to an inch of your life. If you were honest, you didn’t think you were going to fit. And right now, you sort of wished you hadn’t. The air you’d sucked in felt like granite, holding your breath as Loki Laufeyson padded obliviously over the heated tiles. Why am I such an awkward arsehole, you thought; lungs starting to burn. Can’t just say hello, excuse me; like a normal person. Need to hide behind the feckin’ lockers, Jesus.

Okay I’m sorry but nothing will ever beat the pure tragic poeticism of that one shot in Thor 2011 of Loki looking down at his hand in total shock during the battle of Jotunheim as he tries to rationalize why This Thing That Is Happening Cannot Be Happening.

(If I may…)

Like, just to reiterate, Frost Giants are able to burn Asgardians through touch alone with severe frostbite that even healing stones can’t fix completely (Or, technically, anyone who isn’t a Frost Giant I guess, but I imagine the results are far worse). And like fuck if that doesn’t say enough. Because those guys are made of some strong stuff.

But Loki fully expecting to burn, doesn’t.

Not only does he not burn, but his arm is forced into a form he’s never taken before, one that he didn’t cause or choose intentionally. It just did it. For him.

HE KNOWS. He knows what it must mean, but the fucking SHOCK of it. It can’t mean that. He must be thinking. It can’t be. But there’s no other immediate explanation!

And he doesn’t have time to think about it. He’s in the middle of a fight! This guys trying to kill him!So he has to snap out of it. And then he goes on to save literally almost EVERYONE ELSE!

But then.

But then.

This fucking tableau. This fucking tableau!!

Look at it! Actually, just stop reading this post and go watch this part of the movie! I won’t even blame you! Like holy fuck.

This shot gets me every time. It (unfortunately) goes by so fast in the actual movie but it is SO GOOD. This just. Dawning horror of taking a moment to process that that really just happened. The breathing. THE BREATHING. And he looks at his arm like it’s not even his. Like it’s something entirely alien to him. Because IT IS.

This kid is not ready for this information. He’s so very much not ready. He’s panicking, he’s in denial about it. He’s questioning absolutely everything he knows about himself and trying to make sense of it against this new reality that he’s just been dropped into. He’s wondering what am I? and formulating an answer that’s impossible to comprehend. And the worst part is, it makes sense.

It makes sense in the most awful way possible. And when that last bit of hope that he might be wrong— that last doubt— dies, when that thin steel rod holding him together finally snaps, he can’t even say that he doesn’t understand. Because, to Loki, this is the confirmation that not only are all his worst fears correct and 100% founded, but that they are a part of him he will never be able to circumvent. It’s all been in vein. And they’ve all known. They’ve known all along.

Everything he’s worked against himself for, everything he’s done, the way people have treated him his whole life, all the things that in his mind make him less than what he’s supposed to be…

And he can’t change a thing.

…Anyways, that shot of him looking at his arm might be one of my favorite cinematic moments of all time, and I’d just like everyone to appreciate it. That’s all.

(Also… how anyone can watch this movie and not view his attack/attempted genocide against Jotunheim as a metaphor for his own self destruction/ self hatred and a manifestation of his inability to accept himself as he is is completely beyond me. But that’s a post for another time.)

Im telling you, books are coming back.

It’s inevitable…

People are exhausted with Disneys Marvel Machine plopping out 500 films a year, and beloved actors turning out to be monsters that are still allowed to dominate a screen. They’re sick to death of the 20 something love interest of the 50+ actor. They’re tired of the propaganda, they’re tired of the pandering, they’re tired of the horror stories about special effects teams being overworked and underpaid.

People are just tired of the same actors doing the same annoying shit in a different outfit, bad special effects, the blink and you’ll miss it “we’re so inclusive” moments, of having to guilty wonder if the cast and crew were treated well, and the Disney logo slowly creeping into everything like a sinister virus.

But they’ll still need stories… so people will come back to books. They’ll go back to novels, comics, fanfics etc. Most likely in ebook form. Still, the people in this world will always need to escape it. If movies and tv shows keep failing to do that for them, they’ll go back to imagining it all for themselves.

I just find it really comforting that even if people don’t flock back to reading, they’ll flock somewhere where there’s stories. I find so much peace in knowing that we like creative fiction too much to ever lose it as a species.

@the--sad--hatter it’s honestly make sense with how popular BookTok is. People want a story that they can’t get in movies, and there are only so many successful series that do it well enough.

People want expansive lore, want a reason to love the male charecters, in other words they want the details that movies don’t have time to add at times. It’s why people flock to fanfic because we will expand on the ideas that the show presents, we won’t rose color it for any agenda!

We choose what is best and it matters not what gender the love interests are. We will stick closely to canon (if it makes sense of course, and isn’t just randomly thrown out there). We will do what the screenwriters don’t do, because sometimes the characters are more home to us then it is to them. Plus unlike the actors we can change it without risking the loss of a major paycheck.

In conclusion that’s why I think fanfic and books will continue to rise. Comment down below if you think the same.
