The Night-Mother

Under the cut is the comic I drew for this year’s 24 hour comics day/48 hour comics weekend!  This is an adult horror comic, and it comes with some content warnings: miscarriage, child loss, violence, death, and nudity.

If you saw an earlier version of this post and couldn’t read the images, my apologies!  This is real beast of a comic, clocking in at 24 pages, so it takes a little extra work figuring out how to get around tumblr’s image limits.  I think it should hopefully read a little better with all the images under a cut, though.  ENJOY!

Update 2: Kevin Czap Cover Process · This Is What Democracy Looks Like, A Comic Book, A Road Trip
We are only one week into this campaign and have less than $1,000 left to reach our funding goal! Thank you one and all for your generous support of this project. We appreciate every pledge as well as any help spreading the word about this project via word-of-mouth, email, or social media. Every interaction helps! In this update we'll take a look at the process of Kevin Czap (CCS Fellow '17-'18) who created the stirring cover image for This Is What Democracy Looks Like. Horizontal Banner The cover image began as a horizontal banner. It was inked on bristol board and then digitally colored in the computer. This banner image was used in early planning documents, to help recruit and inspire the creative team that contributed to the comic book. Vertical Format and Risograph Prints When it was determined that this project would take shape as a standard American comic book, Kevin reworked the elements from their initial horizontal layout into a vertical format. As you can see, the subtitle changed as the project evolved to better reflect the content of the book (though civic engagement is still covered). This image will not only grace all the covers of the comic books, it is also available as a limited edition 11" x 17" risograph print, at the $25 tier. In future process posts we'll take a look at how other aspects of this project came together. We're looking forward to sharing it with students in classrooms across the USA!

Thursday, February 14, 4pm

at The Center for Cartoon Studies Post Office building

2016 was a tumultuous year. In Off Season, James Sturm’s new book through Drawn and Quarterly (originally published online at Slate), a couple is divided by the politics of 2016—Bernie’s loss to Hillary, Hillary’s loss to Trump, and the disorienting months that followed.

If you are not excited enough, Publisher’s Weekly says, “This finely wrought, politically agitated graphic fiction recalls Raymond Carver, and speaks almost too painfully to the personal strife in today’s political climate.”

As part of his book tour, James will be giving a talk and signing books on February 14th at 4pm at The Center for Cartoon Studies. Come to our Post Office building at 46 South Main Street, where Norwich Bookstore will be selling copies!
