This post is causing me so much joy and I really wanna draw some of those scenes

I want more stories that explore the angst potential of unrequited platonic love.

Like:

‘You’ve always been like a brother to me but I’ve realised you only come to me when you want something’

‘My surrogate parental figure just sees me as another student/employee/lackey’

‘I raised you like my own child but you don’t even remember who I am’

And of course, the classic ‘You’re my best (and only) friend but I know I’m only one of yours’.

Oh maaaan, platonic pining is such a big thing for me. I think it’s something most of my fandoms have in common … I’ve come to realize that what I really want out of a piece of media is a relationship arc that hits most of the beats of a UST/pining arc, or a classic bickering-lovers/enemies-to-lovers arc, but does it with friendship and/or family relationships. Characters desperately yearning to be friends or family, and not knowing if their love is requited, is so completely my jam in every way.

Okay I love this but I am also terrified by this because this is a kind of pain that has been and is probably experienced by a lot of people. It's a pain you remember and I think it's one of those experiences that never really stop hurting. Like you can have a good day and suddenly this memory sneaks up on you, maybe because you've been looking at a piece of media or because someone told you about something that reminded you of it or maybe your brain is being an asshole and hits you with a flashback and you just can't help but feel hurt all over again.

And this is the sort of pain I just think is so much worse than romantic heartbreak or pining, because let's be real not everyone has fallen in love or experienced romantic pining and some people won't. But I know for a fact that I vividly remember the summer where my twelve year old self watched a video clip about some really good friends and the way it tore my heart out and I cried myself to sleep that night, because over the last few weeks I had slowly come to the realisation that for my best friend of that time, I was nothing more than a source of entertainment they could call on when they had nothing better to do or someone more interesting around even though they meant so much to me in turn. I still tear uo every time I hear the song that played in the background of the video. And I remember every single time a family member turned out to not be as devoted to our relationship as I was, because when I was younger I just thought that it was a given, that when someone is important to you, they value you the same.

And everytime I read something like that in a book or a fic, it makes everything so much more real. It's the most delicious pain I can think of.

Because I have never had my heart touched by romance, but I can remember every time it was broken by someone I loved in a platonic way.

And I know, that I am not the only one who had to overcome the grief that follows that realisation and that honestly makes me feel awful and I wish for no one to ever have to deal with this kind of pain, but that's unrealistic because no two persons experience emotions the same and thus we never will be able to predict who exactly is going to value us as much as we value them. So knowing that this is not a experience you have to go through alone, but that it's just one of the painful things of being human, is a small comfort in its own right.

So. Damn. True.
