Ao3 is actually massively culturally important and very very good at being what it is. I’m so serious when I say that ao3 needs to be protected as the anti censorship, by fans for fans, nonprofit, volunteer run, expertly designed archival site that it is. You don’t have to read or like fanfiction to understand that on principle, ao3 is a site that should be defended.

Jon "my grandmother openly resenting the space I occupied but still putting up with our forced cohabitation was just the way of things" Sims probably had a well adjusted emotional reaction when every ally in his s4 life either dismissed, mocked, or contributed to his torture

NO BECASE I THINK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME- especially when he realized that he was in love with Martin only after Martin started to he avoident and dissmisive and ya know, doing the lonely thing. Like I wonder why. Is it maybe because that's his framework for love? Martin being overly attentive of him being considered suspicious because it's a foreign concept to him????

And Martin "I was put in a position to take care of my mom even though she slowly started to hate me" Blackwood putting in so much effort to be supportive and caring to this dude who openly can't stand him for 3 seasons??? I hate these gays and their cycles. At least they both put in the effort to try and unlearn it though s5 but goddamn if those circumstances weren't fighting HARD against them healing.

Ah yes, the Tcf fandom.

My favorite place where we all get emotional and cry over Cale, enjoy him getting bleed and absolutely tired of his "I'm a trash" thing!

Cale and Dokja are in two different sides of the self-sacrificing bastards spectrum. Yujin is there in between the other two. Gongja has breached out and no one has any idea what he’s doing anymore. Lloyd is closer to Cale but is also getting closer to Gongja.

I don’t know about Kiyoung, Hajin and Jesse/Yeseo yet as I haven’t read the manhwas or novels. As for Moondae I read too little to make an assumption

I think that more fanfiction should be written with the aim to tackle the original meaning of hanahaki. Because when the concept of hanahaki disease was originally created, it was intended to be a metaphor for suppressing one’s feelings.

Your feelings are this beautiful garden of flora inside of your chest. When you express how you feel honestly, you allow for it to grow freely. But when you hide how you feel out of fear of rejection, and try to make it smaller and smaller, the flowers become cramped inside of you, until you choke on your own feelings. Every flower you cough up is something you’ve felt, but refused to say.

The whole “dying” thing is intended to be more symbolic especially. You’re killing off bits and pieces of yourself and how you feel, because you’re afraid to express yourself.

It’s not really supposed to be, “The one I love doesn’t love me back, and I’m dying from it.” Rather, it’s more along the lines of, “Repressing your emotions is bad for you, and it’s better and healthier to express them freely, even when it’s scary.”

Which is to say that, one, the cure for the disease should be telling the person that you are in love with how you feel. How the other person feels about the person afflicted should have nothing to do with it, as the trope is meant to be about feeling your emotions unapologetically.

And that, two, it’s not an inherently romantic trope. Obviously, it has romantic applications, but it can be written for any situation where a character is hiding how they truly feel. This can include a refusal to address a specific trauma, a desire to indulge in something that they’re ashamed of, and even really practical things, like wanting to ask one’s boss for a higher position.

Although (as an aromantic person myself) I don’t agree with this conclusion about the trope, this application would also avoid people calling it arophobic. When the thing killing the character is a refusal to be honest with themselves, rather than an unrequited love, it’s on nobody’s hands but their own to save their life.

There are a ton of ways that this interpretation of the hanahaki disease could be applied in new and interesting ways in fanfiction, and I’d love to read what things people could come up with!

"Ewwwww but it's teacher/student and they meet when Binghe is a KID 🤮😱"

Binghe essentially is holding a loaded gun to Shen Qingqiu's head 24/7 and sometimes jiggles the trigger just to scare the shit out of him

I have many thoughts about SVSSS. Are they coherent? No, but here’s another one. I’m been thinking a lot about Shen Yuan’s feelings toward Binghe lately. Specifically, his progression of feelings towards falling in love with him romantically. In the context of SVSSS series siblings, MZDS and TGCF, and also outside of it. And, I just have to ask, when tf did it happen?

I’m going to speak briefly on some spoilers here so beware if you haven’t completed the series.

Obviously I don’t think there was a definable moment in MZDS and TGCF where it showed who fell in love at what exact point except for Hua Cheng, maybe. Especially because Xie Lian and Wei Wuxian could be unreliable narrators. But Shen Yuan, imo, was the worst of them. Which caused me grief on several occasions, bless. But this also affected how the audience could see the progression of Shen Yuan’s romantic feelings bc he wanted to stick his head so deep in the sand about it. Clearly, the audience could tell that by the time Binghe was thrown in the abyss that Shen Yuan loved him, yes. Even though Shen Yuan was in denial about how hard he was grieving him, MXTX clearly let the audience have context on how the lie detector determined that was a lie. However, we never get much context on when that love for Binghe turned romantic.

Reminder, this is my opinion based off of reading SVSSS once and given myself a month or two to digest it. I personally believe from the time they reunited after the abyss and then onwards, Shen Yuan never had the chance to formulate a romantic connection with Binghe with all the misunderstandings, denial, near death, and actual deadly experiences in the way. Okay, yes, feelings never wait for the right context or situations BUT let’s ignore that for now.

I could argue right here and now it wasn’t until after the end of the “story” that Shen Yuan allowed his romantic feelings for Binghe to flourish. That he could sort through his feelings and actually engage with Binghe in a romantic context (which is an Herculean task in itself). He never had the time or space for it before with everything that was going tf on.

*Me yelling at my past self who first picked up svsss with no prior knowledge*: The way to look past sqq's internalized heteronormativity and see his true feelings is by realizing that every time he thinks something like "i bet any girl would want to _______ him!", hes literally just talking about himself!!
