Ok I know many foreign names in manga/anime do sound this dumb out of cluelessness and it's funny to point and laugh, but in the case of Death Note in particular, this was not a "haha japanese man doesn't know american names" thing. The weird names were a deliberate choice.

I don't have my copy with me right now to directly quote the passage, but on the Death Note vol. 13 tankoubon—which consists of extras and behind-the-scenes content—, the author says that all the names in the series (including the japanese ones) were chosen to not be similar to real names, to avoid creating awkwardness/fear/superstition due to someone's real name being in the fictional Death Note.

For the japanese names, this was achieved by using names that sound like normal japanese names, but are written with unusual kanji (such as the surname Ide being spelled 伊出 rather than 井手, or Takahashi spelled 鷹橋 rather than 高橋). Light's whole name, Yagami Light spelled 夜神月, is very unique and unusual, to avoid creating unwanted association between him and any real person.

Since names in english don't have kanji, the author just invented names that sound vaguely american/british but are not real names in those countries.

Resources for trans refugees looking to relocate to/living in Minnesota (MN)

For trans folk in the Midwestern United States, or anywhere else in the country seeking refuge from transphobic legislature, Minnesota has shown to be a safer state than many in this geographical region.

If you are the parent of a trans child, or are trans yourself and are worried about your children being removed from your care, this may be a good option for you. If you are already located in MN, these guides may also be of benefit to you, as the resource document is very extensive.

The Minnesota Trans & Intersex Resource Network have compiled these resource documents for folks who are interested in relocating, or for folks who already live in Minnesota:

Even if you are not planning to relocate, please spread this information so people who are, or are living in Minnesota, can benefit from this. Thank you for reading, and best of luck to everyone who is seeking refuge. We all deserve safety.

daily reminder that boycotting is not a moral stance but a political strategy, so the whole “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” argument is not the gotcha you think it is

you can refer to BDS if you’d like a list of companies to focus your efforts on. you can refer to this website if you’d like to become more conscientious about what you’re buying and check for brands/products to avoid.

*please note that i am a palestinian who has been boycotting my entire life. do not try to explain to me in the tags or reblogs or replies what a targeted boycott is or complain about giving up your comfort for something that you (incorrectly) believe does not make an impact. being quiet is free. exercise your right to remain silent today.

Lindt, Mondelēz, and Nestlé together raked in nearly $4 billion in profits from chocolate sales in 2023. Hershey’s confectionary profits totaled $2 billion last year. The four corporations paid out on average 97 percent of their total net profits to shareholders in 2023. The collective fortunes of the Ferrero and Mars families, who own the two biggest private chocolate corporations, surged to $160.9 billion during the same period. This is more than the combined GDPs of Ghana and Ivory Coast, which supply most cocoa beans. Decades of low prices have made farmers poorer and hampered their ability to hire workers or invest in their farms, limiting bean yield. Old cocoa trees are particularly vulnerable to disease and extreme weather. Many farmers are abandoning cocoa for other crops, or selling their land to illegal miners.

[Video description: A two part video of a challenge and response. The video starts with a conventionally attractive young white woman. A white line moves from the top of the screen downwards, across her face, as seen in many videos showing the before and after effects of video filters. However, the line pauses and the viewer realizes it is not a video filter effect, it’s a piece of white string that the woman is moving herself using her hands off camera. She grabs the center of the string with her tongue, and, using only her mouth, ties it in a knot. This particular party trick, plus her deliberately seductive expression, is meant to imply that she is unusually talented at giving oral sex. She ends her video with a challenging face, as if daring the viewer to do better.

The video cuts to someone who has taken up the challenge. This time it’s an old grandmother, with lovely deep wrinkles. She starts her video the same with moving the string across her face and grabbing it in her mouth. She begins to move her mouth around with a look of deep concentration. The video cuts to imply that time has passed. The grandmother pulls the center of her string out of her mouth to show off her results. It looks like a surprisingly large tangled mess. She keeps pulling and unfolds it to reveal that it’s actually an entire crocheted doily that she had stuffed into her mouth. She gives a wheezing little laugh at her own joke. End ID. /]

ok idk if people on here are talking abt this idk if I’ve seen it but one of the funniest/most awkward things about the immediate aftermath of the queen’s death was audiences that night going to see musicals on the west end, specifically Wicked. apparently before the show some official came out and called for a minute or two of silence in honor of the queen. makes sense. silence concludes, lights come down, show begins. the overture begins very loudly with dramatic and fast-moving music, moves to a slower section, and at around the minute mark, becomes a very brassy, loud, cantankerous kind of aggressive melody. and then, after a minute of silence and a minute of overture, the audience is greeted with the first words of this musical, the words that have started the musical every night since 2003, now being sung loud and proud in london on September 8th, 2022:

“Good news! She’s dead!”

Let us suppose that the "average" horse would have equal proportions of all these parts. The degree to which each part in this poll deviates from the "average" size (20% of total) will determine how large or small that part of our horse will be (i.e a horse with only 10% in Legs will have legs half the size of the average horse).

I will draw a picture of the horse we make!

Thank you for your patience, tumblr. I have been at work all day but now I am home and ready to build this horse you asked for.

First, let's pull up the poll results alongside an average looking horse. I have calculated the size of each part of our horse in relation to Average Size.

Next we will adjust our horse's components according to the specifications.

Finally, let us properly assemble these parts and see how it looks.

And there you have it. Great work team. No notes.
