Violet walked out of the bookstore with a fresh stack of books. Sure working in a library meant that she always had her pick of what she wanted but there was nothing like the having her own collection. Reaching into the bag Violet pulled one out, admiring the fresh cover, the spine still intact, she loved a new book. The moment ended as someone ran past her knocking the book out of her hands and straight into a puddle. “Are you kidding me!” Picking up her now drenched book she watched the person run far off and she was left pouting with a soaking book.

“Figures..” Shiloh muttered as she glanced down at her phone for probably the thousandth time in the last hour. Her date was now 45 minutes late with no response, her hopeful optimism wearing off entirely now as she motioned for the bartender to bring her another drink. “Honestly how hard is it to at least say ‘hey I’m not coming’ rather than just being a dickhead and standing someone up.” She spoke to no one in particular as she ran her fingers through her hair. “I knew I shouldn’t have wasted my night off on this.”

a wild goose chase led her here. the blonde plopped down and angrily tapped her phone muttering to herself. “i’m going to have a drink if you don’t show up by the time i’m done you’re finding your own way home.” sitting down she waited until the bartender was done with the brunette. ordering her own drink violet shook her head overhearing what the girl said. “because more people then we want to believe are dickheads. but just because they are doesn’t mean you have to waste your night off.”

Placing a plate in front of another customer she quickly gives them a smile before turning around to get the next order from the kitchen. She’d only been at work in the diner for an hour and somehow it had already become her busiest shift in the past month. Finishing another order, she pulls out the notepad from her apron and walks over to the next booth where a person is already sat. Hiya, what can I get you?She asks, plastering her friendliest smile on her face.

Violet’s head was somewhere else, a text message from her brother sent her into a sort daze. She was always looking out for him and while he was family she was sure one day she would crack. The voice took her out of her daze and she smiled. “Hi. Hello. She looked down at her menu and then back up at the woman, “Sorry I blanked for a moment.” Exhaling the blonde offered a smile. “Can i have piece of the apple pie and a cup of apple cider. And I need to order something to go should I do it now or later?”

“Listen, I get what you’re saying,” Thomas spoke, before pausing a moment. “The place doesn’t look the best, but it’s some of the best food you can find in New York. Well, at least that’s my opinion.” He wasn’t passionate about a ton of food places, it had been one he visited constantly for years.

Violet rolled her eyes and blew out air between her lips, “I should have known you’d say that. It’s a first date Thomas, I’m not gonna tell my co-worker to take her first date to some sketchy looking place. Her date isn’t even from New York, she doesn’t get it. Taking them there is like a I’ve been dating for you for awhile and I want you to see another side of the city place. Any other options?”

she is the sound of footsteps on the old marble floors, the echos bouncing off the stone walls.  the smell of books, hands covered in ink, she will stain you with her presence, joyous and unforgettable. she is the fall breeze cascading through the trees. she is a fire, stand in awe of her warmth and hearth. shadows always linger but never worry you are protected by something ancient within her
