well. okay i have beef with him for a lot but specifically the way that he mythologized the founding fathers and handled Hamilton in general is such a lameass thing to do. I'm all for non-white casting in theatre since it's such a white medium but i feel (speaking as a white girl with limited knowledge, feel free to call me out) that making pretty much all of the cast non-white when they're portraying historical white figures feels less like a reclamation of american myth and more of like a pillow to soften the blow of making your story about a bunch of racist bastards who did horrible things to the black population of america. not knocking any of the actors, theyre all incredibly talented and im glad they gained wider recognition through this work, but it feels like Hamilton took off because it was this patriotic piece of media that sanded off the edges of american history so that it was palatable to the general audience.

It's a bit hard to talk about because all my theatre friends love Hamilton, but Hamilton sucks so bad. I'm not even talking about the production value or quality, but it's literally just propaganda. Punkitt said the main point already; it sands off the uncomfortable edges and gives you this ultra-sanitized funnytime silly little guy story. The one scene where they roast Andrew Jackson for being a slaveowner felt super uncomfortable because the actor was black. Is this not profane? Is this not revolting to watch? These aren't your blorbos, these were real people who did bad things and it feels like a call of duty game where we gotta kill all the brown people because they're "just bad". It's whitewashing, it's making war criminals and slavers into little silly guys and I can't pretend that it's innocent entertainment. It's disgusting. It's repulsive. It's everything I hate about American nationalism, especially the part where it pretends to be "in good fun".

I was punched and pepper sprayed by cops that my university administration set on student protesters yesterday. Including once where a cop ripped my mask off my face, grabbed my jaw, and sprayed pepper sprayed straight into my mouth. The university sent out an alert in the middle of our protest canceling classes for the rest of the day, only citing “adverse conditions”. After protesters dispersed under threat of even more violence and three buses of riot police from all over the state with rubber bullets and bully sticks parked in front of one our school’s famous landmarks. I staggered over to a couple of friends who were watching on the sidelines. They gave me water and an apple and held a bag of ice on my very pepper spray irritated face. As they were walking me back to my dorm we ran into one of their roommates. She had taken cancelled classes as an opportunity to get crumbl cookie with her friends. Standing in front of her, happy in a floral blouse with her box of cookies, in my pepper spray and water soaked tshirt, keffiyeh sadly hanging off my shoulder, holding an ice pack to my mouth, felt like a slap in the face.

After putting my pepper spray soaked clothes, shoes, and keffiyeh in a plastic bag and taking an extraordinarily painful shower, a friend and I went for dinner just off campus. There we had a pot of green tea and ramen to soothe pepper sprayed throats. We got ice cream after (shared a cup with chocolate and raspberry pomegranate with strawberry pieces on top, it was very good). From our spot outside the ice cream place we watched a steady stream of groups of sorority girls in matching jeans shorts and blue bikini tops walking back to their apartments after some apparently raucous parties. The cognitive dissonance was insane. I really felt a little like I was going crazy.

Even this morning, waking up to the smeared sharpie of the National Lawyer’s Guild’s phone number on my arm, a black and blue chest from where a grown man straight up clocked me while I was held up by two other protesters in a wall, and a still sore throat and eyes from the pepper spray, life goes on like normal. I still have final papers to write and a math exam to review for.

I’m not sure I really have a point. But, this feeling only makes me want to fight harder for a free Palestine. So, fuck Israel for being an apartheid state and all of their crimes over the last 76 years. Fuck university administration for not disclosing their level of investment in Israel. Fuck university administration for not divesting from this genocide. Fuck Joe Biden for actively supporting this genocide. And fuck the police.

For those who don't know, this piece is titled 'Unfinished Painting', by Keith Haring. He painted it about a year before his death of AIDs. I believe he actually finished other pieces between this one and his death. He left the majority of the canvas blank to represent his life and art career cut short due to HIV/AIDs. This was a deliberate choice and commentary about all that we lose (both personally and culturally) by ignoring the AIDs crisis at the time (1989). He was devastated he didn't have time to make more art. 'Finishing' Unfinished Painting is straight up spitting on Haring's grave and shows no understanding to the meaning behind the art. The AI interpretation doesn't even follow his extremely recognizable shape language and symbols. This is why people are angry about AI art. All commerce images and no meaning or humanity
