An analysis of the seemingly lacking moments and distance between Vincenzo and Cha Young in the last two episodes and their feelings for each other

I think the whole Vincenzo parting for a while plot was explicitly made for Vincenzo to realize his feelings for both cha young and the newfound family in Korea. I think it revolves around the parallel of him saying he will leave Korea as he has no attachment in this country but when he actually has to do it, even temporarily, he realized the attachment he has and couldnā€™t leave.

And I have been wondering what would it take for Vincenzo to actually acknowledge his feelings to cha young, like for his character, he wonā€™t randomly confess, we know he deems himself to be undeserving of love because of the deeds he has done (the infamous deleted scene which is actually important for this part of character development)...

Next, the kiss scene was just a chance he(they) took because well they had the perfect opportunity and it was required. Post that, they both probably know how much they long each other but are suppressing the feelings because of all the bigger and important issues happening. After this, Vincenzo losing his mom is another major development that has actually made the love line even more of a not-required accessory for him at the moment. It has also been a trigger that made him descend into pure mafia-like evil, and deepened the conflicts in their minds, i.e, him thinking love is even more unnecessary for him and cha young questioning his morals and her love for him... we could see she wasnā€™t totally comfortable with killing the crystal ball guy. And this is also probably the reason for Vincenzo going solo and cha young getting reduced to a side character (I hate it but that is what is required in the plot).

So coming back to my main point of what would it take for Vincenzo to realize his feelings and act on them is their parting (and he couldnā€™t take it and came back immediately...), now from the preview cha young being in danger might be the next trigger that might push him to confront his feelings directly BUT, the resolution of his conflict of whether he deserves the love or not would be the ultimate decider. And from cha youngā€™s side, it is yet to be seen if she can accept the entire past and baggage that comes along with Vincenzo... she still has her morals(that she learned from her father) and second thoughts of killing people and is definitely in a conflict if she should hop on the real mafia train.. again from the preview it looks like she witnessing another death might give her the push to completely go evil and this same process might let her accept Vincenzo completely.

Sooooo we need the next two episodes to address this properly before jumping into the confession scene that is being demanded. After this analysis, I think everything in the last two episodes makes sense, so the seeming distance between them and the handshake, not a hug, shows they are not ready for the commitment yet (because of all the reasons mentioned above) but donā€™t want to lose their friendship. But him coming back is just cementing that their relationship is more than friendship but neither is ready to take the plunge. Them confessing without showing the resolution of these conflicts would actually be out of character.

I'm actually satisfied with this writing and take back my initial thoughts of this episode under-delivering.

vincenzo may not have vocally responded to cha youngā€™s heartfelt declaration of them being soulmates, but his actions reciprocated her unwavering love by returning to geumga plaza in time to protect her. when cha young told vincenzo that she would feel his pain if he were to get hurt, the truth of her words resonated inside of his heart so deeply that he made the decision to stay. vincenzo couldnā€™t stand even the thought of something happening to cha young while he was away, because if she got hurt then he would feel it too. every step he took away from her at the airport only made it clearer to him that his soul really is tethered to hers and that she is his home.Ā

hiii let's talk about that airport scene bc that's about to live in my head rent free the entire week. it's practially a confession, vinny knows 100% what cha young is trying to tell him with that quote, but she's once again making the smallest step possible to encourage him to go to her in his own time. i fucking love them

heyyy thank you so much for prompting this post i love you.Ā Ā

ā€œfriends are like two souls in one body.ā€Ā

what i find interesting in that quote is that usually, we tend to associate love/friendship to the opposite : one soul in two bodies.Ā

iā€™ve done some research Ā yes i have exams next week that iā€™ve not revised for but instead look at me doing research for a kdrama , and from what iā€™ve gathered, the original quote is from Aristotle :Ā ā€œWhat is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.ā€

now, letā€™s look at what Aristotle has to say on friendship. According to him, there are three types of friendships.Ā

1) the first one is based on based on utility

2) the second one is based on pleasure or delight,Ā

3) the third one goes beyond those self-serving forms of friendships, and is based on virtue, itā€™s a self-less relationship.Ā

hereā€™s an extract of this article i found on the subject :Ā https://associatesmind.com/2013/11/04/the-great-conversation-aristotle-on-friendship/

ā€œIn contrast to the self-centered relationships described above, Aristotle delineates a third type, those grounded in virtue: Ļ„ĪµĪ»Ī¹Ī± Ļ†Ī¹Ī»Ī¹Ī±, fully-developed friendship. This type completes the intended design or purpose of Friendship. This entity is the final cause of friendship. Its participants necessarily share a set of values and principles of an irreducibly moral nature: A wants for B what is good for B for the sake of B. This is an essentially selfless relationship. Moreover, it is a constructive relationship. Each friend, by his own qualities, helps to fully realize what is not only potentially in the other but also realized in the other. He reveres and honors and, therefore, sustains, encourages, nurtures, supports, and celebrates what the other is and can become. Temporally, these relationships are not bound by maintenance of utility or pleasure but are sustainable over a lifetime.ā€

this quote refers to this third type of friendship, the only type of true friendship, one where they both want the best for each other.Ā

of course, this quote is undeniably about soulmates just as much as it is about friends. when aristotle talks about true friendship, contemporary minds would associate it with the concept ofĀ ā€˜soulmatesā€™. the sharing of souls, the most intimate, self-less state of love, understanding & caring.Ā

this is what vincenzo and cha-young are to each other. their relationship transcends utility or pleasure. at first, their relationship might have been one based on utility, they both needed each otherā€™s skills to win against a common enemy but not anymore.Ā

however, the exact quote here refers to two souls in one body, not one soul split in two. that makes it even better imo :Ā

cha-young and vincenzo are the same yet they complete each other. what vincenzo lacks, cha-young has and vice-versa. what cha-young needs, vincenzo provides and vice-versa.Ā

what hurts vincenzo hurts cha-young, what hurts cha-young hurts vincenzo. they want the best for each other, and they grow thanks to each other. cha-young has realised in vincenzo a darkness that echoes in her soul, while vincenzo has find in cha-young a light heā€™s been longing for.Ā

chayenzoā€™s partnership is true friendship, they are soulmates. the strength of their relationship lies in their likemindedness, they are two equals who recognised each other.Ā

it reminds me of that shot of them sleeping after they drank together, the parallels and theĀ ā€˜yin & yangā€™ symbolism. their souls mirror each other. even their storyline is similar. the death of a parent that had hurt them, them working for an immoral institution (wusang/babel & the mafia), their resourcefulness and grey morals, their quest for justice and revenge.Ā

theyā€™re two sides of the same coin, different yet the same, one indivisible whole.Ā

here, cha-young confesses her feelings for vincenzo. itā€™s undeniable, sheā€™s telling him that theyā€™re unseparable. she speaks italian, his language, which is arguably the most intimate way to communicate her feelings as well.Ā

if you speak in a language other than your mother tongue with your significant other, you know that it feels wayyyy more intimate to speak about your feelings in your first language. at least for me.Ā

arguably, korean is vincenzoā€™s first language but italian is the language he expresses his feelings in the most, he swears, he speaks to himself in italian, etc... itā€™s also the language he embraced because of his adoption, the country who welcomed him when no one else did. heā€™s very attached to his italian-ness, he loves opera, misses the food, the clothes... before he begins to form a relationship with cha-young/the tenants, heā€™s unwilling to let go of his italian lifestyle.Ā

i think it shows that cha-young understands vincenzo better than anyone else, knows his fears and most intimates anxieties. they speak the same language, always. heā€™s let her in completely, allowed her to see him vulnerable, see his trueĀ ā€˜evilā€™ self, the parts of himself he wishes to bury and hide from the world.Ā

vincenzo had planned to get the gold and leave for malta, because he wantsĀ ā€œa life away from othersā€. after leaving the mafia, he wanted to hide from the world, isolate himself forever.Ā

but by staying in south korea instead of leaving for italy, vincenzo replies to cha-youngā€™s confession.Ā he will stay by her side, because they are two souls sharing one body and nothing will separate them.

so in his insta q&a on the 15th, chef toto said he would ask vincenzo to:

  • make a new mafia family in geumga plaza
  • let him handle the food for chayenzoā€™s wedding

given that the first of these already happened, would the second happen as well?

Cha-young: [drunk] [points at Vincenzo] Thatā€™s my boyfriend, isnā€™t he handsome?!
Vincenzo: Iā€™m your husband.
Cha-young: [gasps] Even better!

cha youngā€™s love is expressed through statements, while vincenzoā€™s love is expressed through acts. when cha young tells him that they should share the danger, that her heart beats fast because she cares for him, that it would hurt her if he gets hurt, this is her way of telling him that she loves him. when vincenzo keeps his hand on her back, avenges her pain, comes back to protect her, this is his way of telling her that he loves her. and both of them know each other well enough to understand and respond to the otherā€™s way of expressing their feelings, and know exactly what the otherā€™s gestures mean.
