This week I am helping SOTS- Song of the Spirit- with the support needed to support their work into 2022 and beyond.

-What is Song of the Spirit?

“Song of the Spirit is a learning community dedicated to the preservation of indiginous culture and wisdom traditions around the globe. We have 3 core intentions for all our programming:

Song of the Spirit helps Black and Brown folks in the diaspora who are reconnecting with their Indigenous heritage– this is really important bc for the communities they support, our Indigenous cultures and populations often go hugely overlooked in terms recognition and access regarding ‘Indigenous Traditions’.

Song of the Spirit connects us DIRECTLY to our wisdom keepers so that we don’t have to rely on watered down or misappropriated info left behind after colonial genocides and the intentional destruction of our teachings. Doing this means they can also DIRECTLY SUPPORT our Indigenous wisdom keepers and their villages.

For this work to continue to be sustained and to grow in the ways it’s being called it will take a village of supporters to help the institute reach its goal. The end of the year fundraising goal of $25,000;

For all those capable, especially those in solidarity with us as Black and Brown Indigenous people, can you please assist us in strengthening our Indigenous communities?

This post, by the organizers estimates, accounts for the largest amount of donations SotS has received!

That’s extremely cool and I’m deeply deeply thankful to all of you for your real attention, support and care with this project. 🙏🏾

It means a lot to me that this group can continue this work; reconnecting can be very hard what with charlatans and white saviors so a by-us-for-us type effort like this is extremely powerful especially when African and Mexica people are often overlooked so much as indigenous folks.

The hot news is hot like, uncomfortably so- they are still really really under goal. 😔

SotS is trying to raise 25,000 to cover expenses for 2022s classes- Twi, Yoruba, Nahuatl and Mbira so far- donate if you can and if you know of any relevant orgs, please contact them with a link to their contribution page.

Hopefully tumblr we can continue to help them out- so far the effect of all of us following each other on this hilarious hellsite is much stronger than their glossiest IG post or stylish outreach email (no shade to the posts or emails but fax is fax)

I don’t care if you’ve never written before or if you’ve written hundreds of fics.

I don’t care if your fic is 100 chapters or just one.

I don’t care if there’s too much dialogue, or not enough.

I don’t care if your character drinks “a hot cup of coffee” or “a steaming well of carefully brewed fair trade Ethiopian single origin organic beans, contained in an antique blue willow cup with one tiny chip on the edge and mild cracking in the glaze.”

I don’t care if you use the same pronoun over and over or if you use the word “persnickety” eleven times over the course of ten pages.

I don’t care if your historical references are accurate, or if the characters speak in a way that doesn’t fit their environment.

I don’t care if your romantic pairing makes love on a bed of roses at sunset or if they bang up against the wall in a changing room at Walmart.

I don’t care if your stories are nothing but fluff, or nothing but smut.

New Tumblr rules make it super difficult for creators. If we write smut even just once in a while like I do, we are forced to keep our blogs set as explicit if we don’t want them deleted.

If you don’t help and support your authors there is a strong likelihood you’ll have to say goodbye to them since we no longer can reach an audience like we used too.

I’ve read that it’s a known phenomenon, where a woman is hired or promoted into a position after the project has become a guaranteed disaster, so she takes the fall.

So it isn’t just that tumblr @staff hates female presenting nipples, they hate women and gays too…?

From someone who’s survived MySpace, livejournal, deviantart, and fanfiction.nets’ content purges and bad policy updates, here’s some advice on how to get through tumblr’s recent bullshit:

- don’t knee jerk delete. I know it’s tempting to peace out immediately but hang on and do the other steps first. Out right ghosting and erasing everything is how fandoms die.

- archive everything on your blog you want to keep

- tell your followers how they can archive and keep your work too. A lot of fic and art were only saved from ff.net and lj because other people saved it first. If you’re cool with other people saving your work for them to personally keep, let them know this. You can absolutely discourage reposting but I really do highly recommend you allow people to personally save fic and art they like and are worried will disappear forever. Digital Dark Ages are a real thing.

- tell people where you’re jumping ship to. Give links. Keep that info up, even if you’ve left the site.

- go through who you follow and find out where else you can follow them. Save their work if they’ll allow it. It’s tedious as hell but if you want to keep up with people on here clicking on their page to check in is the best way to do it.

- support places like ao3. This is exactly why ao3 asks for donations a few times a year. They are a 100% anti-purging, judgement free, ad free non profit run by an elected board and protected by lawyers. Places like ao3 literally save fandom so please continue to support them and other similar archives. This is exactly why ao3 is so important.
