I usually add instinctual stitching to the pages before and after they're bound, but I especially love adding the stitching when the book is complete. It's the little details that inspire me. * I love to use color in my work, I relate the various hues, tints and shades to my feelings. I may be leaning toward some pink this new year, which represents happiness to me. * My hubby found this hummingbird nest in our backyard a while back and I've kept it in remembrance of my Mom who passed in 2018. She loved Hummers and would keep a feeder outside her living room window so she could watch them feed as she sat in her favorite chair. I miss my Mom, yet I feel her all around me. I know she's near because the hummingbirds are here to remind me. The end of a year always causes me to pause and reflect and introspection helps me stay grounded. * For me, instinctual stitching is like finger painting. I remember the joy I felt while exploring the possibilities of painting with my hands. Now I do the same thing with my stitching. The exploratory journey of the needle and thread making it's way through the fabric without a plan or expectation of what it will become is inspiring to me and a profound expression of my artistry. I encourage you to make something if you feel the need, don't worry about whether it's good or not, just do it for you. The enjoyment of working with your hands and watching something come into being, without judgement, is magical. * I’ve been hoarding this rusted piece of fabric for a while now and decided to throw it in the washing machine with some old house cleaning rags and some of the rust washed away. I’m happy enough with the out come, however next time I’ll soak in salty water after I unroll them to see if I get better results. Does anyone have any tips on how to retain the rust color? Ps. * I have many "irons in the fire," as my Pop used to say. Instead, maybe I should say, I have too many threaded needles on my pincushion. * I'm working on a new Tiny Tome. The cover was cut from an old canvas I had built up paint layers on, which makes an exceptional book cover. I've auditioned the pages and signatures and all it needs is to be bound and embellished on the inside. I still need to decide whether I want to embellish the cover, but my practice is one step at a time. No projecting, no expectations or self-judgement. * Here are a couple detail pics of my Peace Quilt, I'm using #instinctualstitching to put my quilt together and as embellishment. I started this little blanket of comfort on February 24th when Ukraine was invaded. Besides everything else disturbing that's been going on, I needed something to keep my hands busy and my mind focused on the stitching rather than the news. It's been a great help to me, that's why I call it the Peace Quilt. I've always wanted to take quilting courses, but the precise cutting of fabric was daunting to me. It seemed a little too close to trying to attain perfection, which you know isn't my thing. So I decided to make my own quilt without planning or expectations and I absolutely love the process. I feel it's a good illustration of all the chaotic feelings I was having.
