Last year I got a little wasp problem when wasps decided that my balcony's wooden ceiling would be a perfect spot for a nest. The nest apparently was never finished and I found large pieces of it on the floor but I still contacted maintenance to ask what to do.

The maintenance came to visit and didn't find any nest, so that's good. I was told that I should put a crocheted fake wasp nest on my balcony, near the spot wasps favor, because they refuse to built a nest on someone else's territory. Better yet, fill the nest with newspaper because it smells like a wasp nest.

I found some handmade nests online and I'm going to give it a try! Many of the sellers said that they and their friends and family have been using the fake nests successfully for years in home, summer cottages, outdoor buildings etc.

Sharing this here because I didn't even know about such a solution! I hope it helps anyone who wants to keep unwanted wasps away from certain parts of their home and yard.

There are currently ~2300 works in AO3 tagged with "Created Using Generative AI"

I'll be upfront with my opinion, which mirrors my opinion in regards to my field: using AI will only hasten your own obsolescence. The point of fanfiction is not to crank out fics, but rather to enjoy the hobby and communities of writing and fandom.

Give me a 1000 fics written by baby writers with bad grammer, bad plot and bad characterisation over ANY Ai generated fic!!!!

I would rather see passionate beginner writers make thier first, and admititantly awful, steps into fandom. They are out future, not a machine!!!

I will never read AI. I will never use AI. Give me real humans.

I use bookmarks to curate my "To Read" list

instead of "mark for later" (history) function.. because bookmarks are searchable and taggable!

Why is there no option for just "I bookmark things I like and want to be able to find again" (that doesn't include the added unrelated implication that I also private bookmark things I'm embarrassed about)? I bookmark things I like and want to be able to revisit and I have no private bookmarks.

It's wonderful to me that two major factors about AO3 - its noncommercial nature and its lack of user tracking, data collection, and algorithms to serve up content - are regularly responsible for keeping it from falling afoul of various shitty laws. That the features that were baked into its design 15+ years ago to protect it from what seemed like the logical threats at the time, and to stay true to its original values (no making money on the site; no tracking users' reading habits; no ads; no collecting users' personal data; no algorithms to push content on users) are now also protecting it from an awful lot of very intrusive and overreaching laws that its founders didn't envision. I just think it's neat.

**To be extremely clear on this point: those laws are still bad, even if they don't impact AO3! It's still bad that certain states and governments want people to be forced to present ID to be able to access anything they determine is inappropriate. It's still going to affect a lot of other sites, and harm a lot of people! You should still contact your representatives and sign petitions and protest against bad bills that violate people's privacy or promote censorship. But whenever you start to worry about whether a particular law or bill is going to apply to AO3, look carefully at whether it specifies that it applies to commercial entities/sites (AO3 is noncommercial) and whether it's primarily concerned about algorithms, collecting user data, and restricting how that data is used (AO3 doesn't collect or sell or otherwise make use of your data).

Friendly reminder that you should

  • Write that fic
  • Draw your OC
  • Redesign that blorbo
  • Plan that comic how you want
  • Create the content you want to see
  • Be cringe
  • Be free

The only thing that matters is you having fun! Not what others think!
