The sun had barely peeked over the horizon when you found yourself in the library, scouring the shelves for something that would have the answers to save your new companions from the curse they were under. You had to do something. You had magic. Perhaps you could use it to help them.
Yet, after scanning twelve shelves, you were beginning to lose hope.
You were in the middle of the ladder when you felt all of the emotions that came with the beastly master of the castle hovering over the doorframe.
“Good morning,” you called without turning around. Adam’s blue eyes widened.
“How did you- Oh, right. I forgot we had a magic user in the house.”
“Not fond of magic?” You opened a book and scanned a few lines before setting it back on the shelf.
“Not particularly, no.” He huffed a sad sort of sigh before he remembered what he was going to ask you. “What are you doing here so early?”
“I’m going to break the curse.” You stated nonchalantly. Adam dropped the book in his hand.
“Quite…ambitious of you, isn’t it?” he stammered, trying to get the words out.
“I’ve broken my fair share of curses, you know.” You turned to face him, raising an eyebrow at his dumbfounded expression.
“It’s not that, it’s just…I didn’t expect you to care about me.”
“Actually, I’m doing it for Chip.” You smirked as he released an amused chuckle. “But given that you saved my life, I suppose I owe it to you as well.”
“You don’t owe me anything. I…you pulled me through the toughest spots of my life. I looked to you for hope, and you were a shining beacon in the dark, even before I knew you existed.”
“I was your favorite character.” You gathered the conclusion from his emotions, and he nodded to confirm it. You smiled fondly. After all, what would if be like if your favorite character were to waltz into your life out of nowhere? No wonder he was so protective of you, so nervous to make sure you were content and comfortable. “I’ve just realized that I don’t know your name.”
“It’s…Adam.” It was so foreign on his lips. He hadn’t used his true name in a very long time. You could feel the emotions as they hit him. Confidence furled up inside his chest. “My name was Adam. Before all of this.”
“Your name is still Adam.” You told him softly. You drifted down from the ladder to stand in front of him. “Maybe…maybe you deserved a fate like this once, but that was a long time ago. No one is purely a monster without good reason. Even the darkest of evils didn’t start that way.”
“What are you talking about?” The closer you got to him, the more rapidly his heart began to beat.
“I know you feel guilt and shame every time your current situation comes into the conversation.” You reached up gently and took one of his large paws in both of your hands and held it over your heart. “I feel all of your emotions, Adam. Every single flash in your mind courses through my heart. You don’t need to be ashamed of who or what you are. I care about you and the others and I’m going to fix this.”
“And what of Ferdinand? If you break the curse, who will protect you?”
“We’ll worry about that when the time comes.” You reassured him, your hands still fastened around his. Your toes lifted from the ground as you levitated so you could press a quick kiss to the corner of his lips. Adam felt as though his heart might explode, and when you felt his surge of sudden joy, you smiled. “Now, help me find a spell book, would you?”
“Right this way.”
